I am a 70 year old great grandmother, am not a head banger, but I have watch this video over 50 times. I have watched over 20 reviewers, voice coaches composers, singer and You Tube influencers,. I never get tired of this rendition nor the folks reaction when they hear it. I have researched and found while the rest of their music is not of my style the words and meaning of the songs they perform really mean something. Thank you for giving their version of this song a listen.

David Draiman has a trained voice and it shows as he transitions from his low tones up through his head voice, through the distorted "metal" voice and right back into the lush soft tones at the end. A lot of musicians that people are wowed by actually have put in a lot of work behind the scenes!

Dude, you cannot make assumptions about metal singers. MANY of them are ridiculously talented vocalists. Metal as a genre is simply a raw, untamed expression of emotion, from from depression and anxiety to rage and fear.

    • @CrimFerret
      @CrimFerret 5 лет назад +2

The ones that last have to be. It takes a great deal of training and practice to be able to do the growling distorted vocal style without damaging your vocal chords. Even David said he'd had to get some more voice training to be able to do a sustained vibrato while doing that which he used in this song.

Take it from this 75 year old grandmother who was around for the original of this song, this is how I believe this song was meant to be sung. It is a protest song, full of anger as it well should be. I actually use this song as a back ground when in prayer for The things going on in this world to day, Silence like a cancer grows, wow, could not have said it better myself, silence to political correctness, and corruption of our God given Governments, silence to babies being aborteded right and left. So yes Disturbed keep on disturbing the norm, it needs disturbing.

That's very well said, and I thank you for the comment. At 28 years old, I'm often curious about what previous generations think of some of these cover songs. This song in particular seems to get a favorable response among those who knew the original. Hard rock/metal artists generally must entertain the idea of making softer songs with great discretion. Many bands known for a particularly heavy sound or content often finds themselves negatively criticized for dulling their edge. Disturbed seems to have preserved the quality of S and G's work while simultaneously appealing to original Disturbed fans and then some. That's something few have ever achieved.

My mom said the same thing. Disturbed sang it as it was intended. Although I can’t say I agree with your complete interpretation. However, isn’t that what a well written song is intended to do? We interpret it in a way that is most meaningful to us. It’s really cool to see such an amazingly penned song back with new life to touch so many other lives.

Carla, Disturbed did another cover of well known group named Genesis. They did "Land Of Confusion". I know you don't followed their other songs. David Draiman was apprehensive of singing this classic that was suggested by other member of Disturbed. Plus, Paul Simon loved Disturbed's version.

You somehow got it in your head that there is SILENCE as a reaction to "babies being aborted left and right"??
What fucking planet are you living on?
It is true, it is a protest song. But you are twisting the words to fit your own twisted views if that is what you take from it. It was written in the 60's, right in the middle of war protests and shortly after the assasination of JFK. So it is mostly a protest againt war and the impacts war have on society.
Besides, the 60's and early 70's were the times of "free love" and all that, not really in keep with your god fearing narrow views.

Anyone with a beating heart deeply reacts, in some fashion, to this video. Many seem somewhat confused as to what they are witnessing. For what it’s worth, my take is that perhaps the best way to understand is to start at the end of the video and work forward to the beginning. I believe what we saw in the last scene was taken from Greek mythology where “Charon” rows the souls of the dead across the river “Styx” into the afterlife. Substitute musical instruments for “souls” crossing over to be reunited with their sheet music... as one cannot be complete without the other. The song was originally written, and 1st played, in 1964 by Simon & Garfunkel and soon became one the greatest hits of that era. At the time it was released, crowds of us were in the streets screaming at each other in our blind ignorance about Vietnam. That same ignorance wouldn’t allow us to listen to any words but our own. Sound a bit familiar? I’m a 73 year old grandfather who did two tours on the rivers in Vietnam. We listened to the original thousands of times. This version is sung with magnitudes more depth and the visuals in the video are absolutely stunning!

The words were prophetic when it was written. They are now the words of stark reality. We now bow to the Gods of electronics and the silence is deafening.

Ok that is fine the problem is that you are helping breaking the point of even having generes at all.
Because the facts are they are a metal band it might not be for you but you cant choose it how the genera describe itself is how you know what it is.
I assume you dont classify black sabbath, judas priest or metallica as metal problem is they are metal.
But if you want to be in that mood all metal is rock from the hardest of hardest to softest of softest it is all rock.
The problem with you choosing what genera a band or even a song is is simple it makes the words used useless and words have one meaning to make yourself understood by other people.
I am not trying to attack your opinion here this is just a thing i have noticed and it is starting to annoy me as a music fan and not 1 genera fan it is fucking hard to find good music allready and then people start seperating bands from one place adding them in to another just because of there own feelings on the matter making the whole genera thing even more confusing to follow.
It will not suprise me in 10years time bands that are black metal now is considered hard rock making it even worse to find good bands.

David Draiman is formally trained. He was destined for a Shamikhah until he was kicked out of Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study after he formed his first band. He later trained as a Jazz and. So he has extensive training in the vocal arts. In 1996, he graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government, Philosophy, and Business Administration. He left it all when he joined Disturbed. When he did Sound of Silence he had to brush the dust off the training he had. Paul Simon even wrote David and told him he liked it.

He was Juilliard trained, the best school in the entire world, for the performing arts. He’s actually an opera singer. He did this song justice, cuz it was a huge hit for Simon and Garfunkel in the 60’s. Sorry to say I was around then.!like to hear comments of the younger generation that can appreciate a great song and singer!!

David Draibin is a classically trained vocalist with a 4 octave range. He hasn't changed it. He did this song but didn't initially want to do it. But he has always had the talent, he just loves what he does so why should he sing for everyone else just because he can? I think he should keep doing what makes him happy. Kudos to Dave!

I am a 61 year old man and while I can't remember when Simon and Garfunkel's original 1964 version with only Simon's guitar or their record label's adaptation by adding other instruments to it and made a hit out of it in 1966 came out, it wasn't until about 1969 or 1970, that I started getting interested in the contemporary of the day and from then on I remember hearing this song on the radio.
It wasn't until I heard Disturbed's version of the song that I started looking at the lyrics and searching for it's meaning. To me, my interpretation of the song involves both the original Simon and Garfunkel's version and Disturbed's version.
I think the original was meant to warn us of what can happen to society if we didn't change our way and Disturbed's version is telling us, we have failed or are failing to heed that warning.
I know that when I watch either Disturbed's official studio version or their performance of the song on Conan O'Brien it brings tears to my eyes.

I think he never did sing like this before. He took a beautiful song and turned it into a rage. He slapped it around a little bit and pulled out the truth. Awesome is too weak to describe this version. It makes us listen and understand. I wish he would do more like this. It would be sad if he never did this again.
