  • In this Behind the Greens episode, I show you the importance that the aviation industry has on managing their carbon footprint & the sustainable practices being used to manage that footprint and reduce gas emissions. Not only does the aviation industry have an important role in managing their carbon footprint, but so does each individual airport. Today, I will show you around Heathrow Airport & the ways they practice eco-friendly sustainability.
We will explore many of the electric, carbon-free technologies the airport uses to make sure they are practicing sustainability. We then go behind the scenes to explore Heathrow’s electric pods. Essentially the future of cars that are driver-free. We then take a tour to the air traffic control tower exploring how there are over 10,000 planes in the air at any given time. Moving into the terminal of Heathrow, we explore the renewable resources & sustainable practices not only on the runway but also inside the airport. After an exciting day of touring, we finish with a well-deserved fish & chips from a restaurant serving sustainable fish!
One day we will travel the world in emission-free planes. But today is not that day. So, we support change big & small, making sure we choose to support businesses who practice sustainable habits.

Heathrow is actually a really good example of a sustainable (ish) airport! In terms of buildings and operational footprint it's really impressive - though the elephant is obviously still the flights - I seem to recall it's something like 98% of their total emissions from the Scope 3 of aircraft fuel consumption.

I didn't even know such things existed at airports or it's specifically in Heathrow? I hope one day we will start flying eco-friendly planes...
