Oh man, I feel so bad for you, being stressed because people wanted you to be crazy about this game - but as you said, it's like Heroes 1 & 2 but mostly improved, and that's it, really. I just wanted to say that the reason why I enjoyed these reviews is BECAUSE you were new to them. It has been fun to see you talk about them as "a newbie", and the point you make about there not being a lot you can say about 3 after talking about 1 and 2 is excellently made. I don't think anyone should be upset or angry or anything like that. I've just had some fun watching you have some fun with the games. That's all really. :) EDIT: But seriously, the Polish HoMM community is coming for you now.
although, his HOMM videos got more views then usual ones, so probably there are some new people who feel very confused and scared for their heads after watching this video, while pressing the subscribe button with their trembling hands, they are not sure why, but it feels just right to do so.
This is EXACTLY why I was hyped for your Heroes 3 review. This is absolute perfection. "wtf it's the same again but better again, I've already made this video" is the best reaction you could possibly have.
I think you're the most honest reviewer i've ever watched and i love your signature thanks to that very same thing. Keep going man, you're one of those reviewers i share with all my friends since your quality standards are ridiculously bizzarre and high and funny; and that makes you one of the most entertaining and honest reviewers out there. Good luck man!
The ending made me think about how Endless Jess would have structured the same video to read as a narrative: -Heroes 3 is an improvement over the first two. It's great! -It's the best one, just like people say! .......Just like people told me, explicitly. -In fact, they really wouldn't shut up about how much it was going to blow my mind. -[getting angry] [possibly rants about the entitlement of the community, and the pressure they put on him] -[sudden realization] The real problem here is that I'm trying to review a game with nothing to talk about! -No, the real problem here is that RUclips is a dispensable platform for shitty reviews that are meant to take a single position and then go in one ear and out the other. -GET OUT OF HERE. GO READ A BOOK. GO PLAY HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC 3! OR ELSE. -[cuts an actual fully edited wrestling promo, possibly with a "Stand on ya head" musical number]. -_"Endless Jeeess"_ Edit: And for the record, it would be much more poorly received by the Might and Magic community
5 (besterest) > 4 (good different game with a lot of great options) > 2 (nice graphics) > 3 (ugly graphics!) > 7 (not bad) > 1 (too archaic) > 6 (the betrayal)
I always feel this weird sensation when watching a HippoCrit video. I really like the style of them and how they just feel down to earth and relatable. For example, how Hippo will skip over things he doesnt find interesting or goes on long tangents about things on his mind. Kinda makes me wish I was just as talented. Hope you keep growing HippoCrit.
Almost fell off the chair by looking at this Einstein-looking guy that much looks like made of plasticine! xD Nah, he's fine. Well, he's younger than me, and is looking at an "old" game with younger eyes. I was "there" when 3D graphics came into being, it was a marveling evolution to me, so it's funny to hear a young guy speaking about a game when his Stone-age is precisely the 3D graphics (mine were games in Text) :p I guess he's right, and this franchise hasn't done a true evolution. It all looks a bit of the same. Considering every game now is only released unless it's a Block Buster Game, these "old" games are lagging behind. Still, HoMM is still one my favourites!
I watched this video, and... I'm not mad at him? I can understand what his opinion is and why, and I respect it. Plus, to be honest, he has a point regarding graphics, although I never minded them that much. In case you ask: yes, I think Heroes of Might and Magic III is awesome, and yes I'm from Eastern Europe.
Damn Hippo, you sounds like you're going through some stuff. It's just a video game, albeit a great one, it's just a youtube video, don't let it get to your head. We like you and your content, no one's really gonna get mad whatever happens or whatever you decide to do. Hope you feel good, keep up the good work dude
I'd like to remind you that when 3do guyz announced a release of a futuristic update for heroes3 (and Heroes of Might And Magic universe is actually a mix of lazers, robots, spaceships and medieval fantasy that it's gotten to be associated with after HoMM strategy games) fans went insane and started writing life-threatening letters to developers, so minigun goblins and tank nagas got cancelled.
I'm not sure i agree. I would easely kill everyone if someone dislikes this game. Just kidding. I do however love this game. The people giving threaths to the developers are all stupid. An Alchemy/Mecha based team would have been amazing in heroes 3.
Mislav Kranjčev unfortunately the internet can be like a den of blood thirsty vipers on crack when you voice your opinion especially if its something they love i once saw a reddit post of someone who didn't like HOMM3 and dear god the stuff said would make satan sick to read
Also if anyone is interested in this game: don't buy the HD edition on steam, it only has some redrawn graphics but doesn't even include the map editor or any of the dlcs, the gog version is superior
Brutal honesty. I like it. I agree with you wholeheartedly on the +1 note. HoMM 3 is yet further polished HoMM 2. It's so polished it still glistens in the sun, so to speak. But it's still just the same when you get to the bottom and your point is understandable. I also agree on the graphics; HoMM 2 is generally more magical and beautiful. Keep at it.
I really love this kind of review, is the perfect balance between an actual review and a personal comment about how you feel awesome for what you played.
So the first videos of yours I watched was the Ape Escape review, and I really liked them. I looked at your newest uploads, and I hope you're just on a break or something. Really like your content
Haven't watched it yet, but dude! We're happy you review the game after so many years! Even if you criticize it, it's nice. You have the possibility to give us an opinion of a bystander, somebody who wasn't there many years ago when Heroes 3 was a big thing. And that's ok :) It is always nice to hear somebody else's opinion.
I have no idea how I managed to not notice you releasing this one, a good and interesting video. Far better than just making a dull video you wouldn't want to make, I enjoyed it. Though I still wanna see your video on Heroes 4 .
Homm 4 review will be fun, it's not really that bad but it's so different from the rest in many ways. (But it has really good storytelling) Also ideas for Homm related videos: Favorite/Least Favorite Factions/Units/Heroes/Skills/Spells. I know there are a lot but I would totally watch a video with Hippo giving his opinions on every single Faction/Unit/Hero, would be interesting too since he isn't as experienced with them, so it's a fresh perspective even if it includes some newbie mistakes like over-/underestimated something.
This makes me do happy feelings. I just wanted to see a HippoCrit style review. This is great, keep it up. Doesn't matter what you do, it's the "silly man" we're here for.
If i must be honest i was one of those people who were waiting for the another video which tell me "that game is awesome", but you have convinced me and the purpose of doing actually good review is more important(sorry if I made some language mistakes, English it's not my native language XD)
I don't think there's anyone on this 'ere site just like you Mr. Crit. Your always fluctuating, absurdist style has grown on me since I found your stuff, and while not everything works, it's always refreshing. Having a meta-breakdown in the middle of a ""review"" is a new highlight. Seems like your aggravations with RUclips has gotten to you aswell as of late, which is quite the understandable thing. And nice to hear you talk about not being on RUclips and doing other, more "fulfilling" things, interrupting your own video, that sealed the deal for me. Will check out more of your stuffs - even if it's counter-intuitive to what you just said.
Fun fact: movement points are calculated based on the slowest unit you have with the hero at the begining of the turn. So you can exploit that by leaving all but the fastest unit at the end of your turn. It's a pretty big difference as well.
You can split up troops in heroes 2 too, chose a creature shift leftcklick on an empty field, then you can split them. If you prefer 2 over 3, this might help you in some scenarios.
yeah, hmm3 has a strong following throughout all of eastern Europe. I'm Russian and I've been playing this game for about 20 years. To this day it remains my favourite game of all time. I've never actually played the first two but it still seems like you could have said more in this video. At least talk about some new monsters, skills, campaigns, artefacts or objects. There are also fan-made expansions like In The Wake of Gods and Horn of The Abyss. WoG ads tons of completely new concepts but I like how it's all completely customizable and an be turned on or off in every single game. HotA adds a new pirate faction and also makes some balance tweaks
As a huge heroes fan, this video was amazing in how absurd it was. I feel like over the course of 13 minutes you said absolutely nothing but I loved every word.
I think this review is great. Its exactly how I feel about it. I am so glad he called out the awkward Heroes III 3D rendered units made into strange 2D sprites in comparison to the beautiful pixel art sprites of Heroes II.
Felt the same back in the day. In some regards it does look better of course, but exactly that stood out and they used the same method for MM6-8. But it never actually bothered me. It's just a thing of that time, the transition from nicely done pixel art to 3D with the intermediate step of having 3D stuff rendered and cast into 2D sprites because the computers weren't good enough for the 3D stuff in real time yet without a more visible quality loss.
I've never played heroes 1. I've only seen it in videos. I haven't played heroes 2 in probably 20 years. I still play heroes 3 to this day. I agree that it'd be hard to find many differences in the earlier games, but the random map generator in 3 makes replay value practically infinite. Aside from that, combination artifacts are great, which I believe became a thing in heroes 3. Beyond that, I feel like they put more thought into balancing the factions, with only a couple exceptions (necro is insanely op). I think that also adds a ton to the replay value.
Honestly don't get the need of people (especially H3 fans) to dictate what something is "the best" and shame/bully people who disagree. I spent hundreds of hours playing every single game in this series, if not more, and i can identify things i enjoy about every single one, and i also can acknowledge major flaws in each of them. Does one have more flaws than another, sure, but i don't regret buying either game because i actually enjoyed myself.
I understand why you didn't find the game mind-blowing,and it's just like you sad at the end,you are new to this game and you literally can't appreciate it enough because basically you really just scratched the surface. The thing about H3 is that there are at least a hundred of little things that you can find out about that you never even knew they existed. For example for 10+ years I didn't knew that you move slower on different terrain if you have creatures that are not native to it(for example if your hero is on the snow area with the castle troops you will move slower than if that same hero had only tower troops because they negate the penalty of they native terrain),or that the external "Stables" structure can upgrade you cavaliers to champions for free in addition to improving movement of every hero who visits it until the end of the week. And these are just two examples and when they all pile up it really becomes mind-blowing,little "secrets",strategies, combinations and such attention to every little detail that you can find out years after you played the game. So you can see why it is so much beloved within the Heroes community.Just when you think you know everything about the game you can find something new. About Heroes 4...I love it,it's great I would even say that it does some things better than every other Heroes game BUT Heroes 4 are not really, well,a Heroes game. They are so fundamentally different that it just isn't fair to compare it whit the other titles and the biggest weakness of that game is it's name.If it had different name than Heroes people wouldn't hate it as much, and there is one other thing that everybody loves to forget,3DO was on the verge of bankruptcy so they pretty much almost forced the team to release the game. But despite all that it IS a wonderful game and it has the hand's down one of the best written campaigns in history of strategy games and can even go toe to toe whit some of the better known rpgs.I am referring to the undead campaign, but even without it others are wonderful and great. The great thing about Heroes 4 campaign is that every one is it's own unrelated tale and it benefits the game tremendously especially for people who are not familiar with it's lore and because it can tell wonderfully written stories that are better than most fantasy books.Just a fair warning,IGNORE the expansion pack campaigns,3DO fired all the writers and just forced the team to make a quick and underwhelming expansions just so they could keep afloat for a little more before the company completely bankrupts.
Yeah I enjoyed Heroes 4 quite a bit though I never really got the hang of that combat grid and line of sight I always found it so difficult to tell how far I could move or if I blocked line of sight of that ranged units And there also was the slight problem of hero durability if the game dragged on as hero durability only scales with levels which happens less and less often while unit damage usually ramps up more and more as the game drags on but potion of immortality helps quite a bit with that (though it does make potion of immortaility seem quite mandatory after all it is quite powerful effect you can use before combat that doesn't wear off before it triggers)
The half-dead campaign was pretty much the real gem of this game... I've yet to encounter a storyline so moving about the undead... Let alone, how a necromancer actually needs not to go on a conquest rampage, but, has a sense of reason, and can actually just pass a decent half-unlife without seeking some dark scheme. There are many good things about heroes 4... But, the general design and gameplay were just... Off... Though, I had to admit, some of the ideas they had could have made a revolution in the game, if they weren't inside such an artistic disaster of a game. In a design perspective, the game was just offputting... The armies and the way you decide which units you'll build is just wrong... The way units handled, the very design of each hero... Pretty much, the whole art of the game was, well, rather ugly compared to the older ones. As far as gameplay mechanics, it tried to advance on the original formula.... But, it broke it. And the real strong point is the campaign... Heroes 4 had the best campaign out of them all, because it made me ignore the art and the off-parts of the gameplay, and made me highly invested in the narrative. Still, heroes 4 was actually good... Might and Magic nine of the other hand... Well, It's still might and magic, but... The 3D killed it, the plot was nonsense, the feel was wrong... Everything about it broke down to pieces. I always position the two sides of might and magic- RPG and TBS together, they tell allot about the stage of the company, the crew and ells...
I love your weird sense of humor. And I'd really love to see your review of HoMM 4 (hint: it's the best one, it just needs some getting used to since a lot of the mechanics changed compared to HoMM 1-3). Please don't give up :)
Don't worry about a fanbase, these are your reviews not theirs. Also, to say for myself I like how you handle reviews and game videos. You are down-to-earth and funny. Doing things I won't expect. I prefer what you do over what you said makes youtubers popular these days. Keep making reviews, Louie! :D
HoMM series was SUPER popular in Poland (especially HoMM 3). All my friends know and still love it. We still play it from time to time. It really has a cult-like following.
Holy moly what a review, didn't expect this after the first and second episodes. Personally I like 2 and 3 equally, though more often than not end up actually playing 3 because of the extra content like the multiple campaigns. I suppose the game has bit more hype than it deserves, I figure that's because lot of our generation were introduced into video games along the time when Heroes 2 or 3 were the hot stuff and since the sequels failed to deliver that +1 experience as you describe it they fell flat for the old fans. I hoped to hear more of your thoughts but I didn't come out disappointed either looking forward to the HoMM 4 review if that's ever coming out and cheerio
Are we going to get the other 2 Heroes games? I think Heroes 5 is something I am intrested to see. I think the previous games are too reliant on going for a set bullshit stategy to win [Fire resistant army + Armagedon spam] while 5 kindda always gives you a chance.
Your mostly (99.9%) right. Minor point- you can split your units and armies in Heroes II, you may not have discovered that, so that's ok. I prefer H II graphics over H III but it's still good.
Great video, same as the previous HOMM reviews. When can we expect a review of HOMM4? It's a totally different game where gameplay has been altered considerably and demands a different mindset than previous installments. Some hate it and I agree that it aged badly but when you don't expect it to be the same as 2 and 3 and just take it as it is, it can be very enjoyable.
Well the reason I at least was so hype for this paticular part of the HoMM franchise is because this is the first and only part of the series I've ever played. When compared to eachother in a sequntial order... yeah there's not much different between each game and there's really not much to say about it. Thanks for the video anyways Hippo! You are great!
I totally get the feeling of expectation you're suffering from. My only advice, as someone that also makes videos, just make the videos because you want to. Don't worry too much about people criticising your reviews because you don't have enough time to properly get in to these rich, older games. These are good videos, they're funny and informative. Sseth's similar reviews are far more memey, yet also contain more information. Keep your style going. Not sure if I liked the somewhat awkward live recording section of the video. It felt a bit like filler :P
At this point, you've reviewed all the HOMM games that I've played. I barely know anything about 4, but my mom doesn't like it. I've seen her play 5, 6, and 7 which all blend together for me. They seem less good than 1, 2, and 3 but I know so little about 5, 6, 7 that I don't actually trust that opinion nor do I care enough to defend it if someone disagrees. What I'm saying is that I can't wait to see you review the games after 3, because I don't know what they're like.
If you want an idea as to how to review Heroes of Might and Might 3, look up the review done by SsethTzeentach, he is a man of culture and his content is most definitely wholesome. I am certain you will take great enjoyment in his video. Just pointing you in the right direction, just so you can see what all the rage with Heroes 3 is.
I know I'm one of those who kept nagging with "make vidz on homm3 plz", but I'm so glad I got this instead. Also I think you might slowly turn into Jess
i think we broke him.

And?
“It's not mindblowing.“

Enjoyed your honesty in this video. I can't wait for your HoMM 4 review.
Hippo, stop worrying about people being mad at you. Most people are here because of you, and will like it because it's YOU that made something.
although, his HOMM videos got more views then usual ones, so probably there are some new people who feel very confused and scared for their heads after watching this video, while pressing the subscribe button with their trembling hands, they are not sure why, but it feels just right to do so.

HOMM 3, also known as The Bestest One!
7 is the best/most best/besterest... there were bugs and they never really fixed it totally but the flanking system add's so much to the game play
5 (besterest) > 4 (good different game with a lot of great options) > 2 (nice graphics) > 3 (ugly graphics!) > 7 (not bad) > 1 (too archaic) > 6 (the betrayal)

You know, it's interesting. Stylized graphics from the 90s still look great. It's the first attempts at realism that have aged poorly.
Its ok. You won't have to worry about a mob unless you get russian captioning.

HOMM III is such a game bringing complex feelings. Summit of ambivalence.
I'd like to remind you that when 3do guyz announced a release of a futuristic update for heroes3 (and Heroes of Might And Magic universe is actually a mix of lazers, robots, spaceships and medieval fantasy that it's gotten to be associated with after HoMM strategy games) fans went insane and started writing life-threatening letters to developers, so minigun goblins and tank nagas got cancelled.

spoiler alert: no review there
I have no idea how I managed to not notice you releasing this one, a good and interesting video. Far better than just making a dull video you wouldn't want to make, I enjoyed it.
Though I still wanna see your video on Heroes 4 .
In Heroes 2 you can also split up units, use SHIFT+CLICK on the unit.
are you gonna make one of these for heroes 4 and 5 to?
That was a great episode, one of the funniest yet. Your stand on my head stand up routine was outstanding
I'm STANDING on your HEAD AS IF IT WAS EASY
I was laughing so much at the Stand on your head part. You are amazing dude.
I had to wait almost a whole 24 hours since I watched your heroes I and II reviews before this came up!
You never went to review HoMM 4! It's the one I find best and was looking forward to the most to watch from you. Please review :)
Kairo1985 sorry never happening
I really like this format, with live improv/stand-up sort of stuff. The Stand on Head guy promo was pure gold.
Homm 4 review will be fun, it's not really that bad but it's so different from the rest in many ways. (But it has really good storytelling)

I wasn't hyped for this vid at all and it was sick as fuck. GOTTA TREAD ON HEADS
This makes me do happy feelings. I just wanted to see a HippoCrit style review. This is great, keep it up. Doesn't matter what you do, it's the "silly man" we're here for.
Ok now I am just VERY excited to watch you review 4, 5 and 6 as they are SIGNIFICANTLY different.
If i must be honest i was one of those people who were waiting for the another video which tell me "that game is awesome", but you have convinced me and the purpose of doing actually good review is more important(sorry if I made some language mistakes, English it's not my native language XD)

4:50 actually it was possible to split troops in HoMM 2 but it was just very sneakily binded to shift-click if i remember correctly
As a huge heroes fan, this video was amazing in how absurd it was. I feel like over the course of 13 minutes you said absolutely nothing but I loved every word.

I was unsure about this video at first but I'm glad I watched it.
Does the "I choo choo choose you" joke make this technically a Valentine's video?
*I'm gonna stand on your head, I'm the headstanding man*
Is this art?
Yeah I enjoyed Heroes 4 quite a bit though I never really got the hang of that combat grid and line of sight I always found it so difficult to tell how far I could move or if I blocked line of sight of that ranged units
And there also was the slight problem of hero durability if the game dragged on as hero durability only scales with levels which happens less and less often while unit damage usually ramps up more and more as the game drags on but potion of immortality helps quite a bit with that (though it does make potion of immortaility seem quite mandatory after all it is quite powerful effect you can use before combat that doesn't wear off before it triggers)
Man I really looked forward to this review. Glad you're being honest though.
It's cool Gibb I figured you wouldn't have much to say after the video on Heroes 2
"I like to be sensible" - Clearly Insane Man, 2018
That hidden green screen tho.
Edit: I love this format so much!
Haha, after watching 1 & 2 I was wondering what this video would be about. I knew you would run into this problem.
I love your weird sense of humor. And I'd really love to see your review of HoMM 4 (hint: it's the best one, it just needs some getting used to since a lot of the mechanics changed compared to HoMM 1-3). Please don't give up :)
You can split units in HoMM II as well: click the unit, point to a vacant cell and SHIFT-click.
I know.
"second aid is necromancy" I want that on a shirt!
BTW, you can split units in HoMM 2 too. Just press "Shift".
I hoped to hear more of your thoughts but I didn't come out disappointed either looking forward to the HoMM 4 review if that's ever coming out and cheerio
this adds so much to the narrative
Nice set background, the lack of clutter is really nice
The ascending “that video game but better” had me laughing audibly and my roommate was scared for me
Where can I get Heroes of Might and Magic 3? I've wanted to play it all again but I'm not sure where to look.
GOG.com has it
STAND ON YA HEAD
Are we going to get the other 2 Heroes games?
I think Heroes 5 is something I am intrested to see. I think the previous games are too reliant on going for a set bullshit stategy to win [Fire resistant army + Armagedon spam] while 5 kindda always gives you a chance.
i would love to see more vids in this format
also
is that your 12 string?
me dads
Your mostly (99.9%) right. Minor point- you can split your units and armies in Heroes II, you may not have discovered that, so that's ok. I prefer H II graphics over H III but it's still good.
The last part sounds like a rap at 1.25x
Fantastic... just... fantastic
Stick with this standup comedy looking ass set up I love it. It reminds me of some of your oldest Hippocrit stuff like the Nostalgia video.
Im here watching this and realize its uploaded yesterday damn. nice.
holy moly a new vid, thank you based hipp
I like this guy, i miss his game reviews!
Yeah! He is so unique and funny. I hope he himself can see it as well. RUclips pressure seems a little bit scary tbh.
I'm not even interested in this game I just watch cause you're entertaining. you're doing great.
> 4:55
> Makes a scouting hero
> Gives him a god damn dwarf
> ...
Do we consider this the formal presentation of the Head Standing Man, the future champion of all wrestling?
Where have you gone brother Hippo?
Great video, same as the previous HOMM reviews. When can we expect a review of HOMM4? It's a totally different game where gameplay has been altered considerably and demands a different mindset than previous installments. Some hate it and I agree that it aged badly but when you don't expect it to be the same as 2 and 3 and just take it as it is, it can be very enjoyable.
Need dat HoMM4 review though.
No uploads? Why? Please come back, we love you!
This is the best hero 3 review i've seen. Mostly because it's honest.
it's OK, dude. We already have Sseth review on this great game. I think it's enough
Be chill and everything will be fine. Don't rush, if it makes you unconfortable. After all, games are played to be enjoyed.
Are you planing to make Heroes 4, 5, 6, 7 videos?
You can split armies in heroes 2 as well. Just press shift and click on an empty unit space. 😉
You guys scared the shit our of this boi :(
Aaaand he's dead. Press F to pay respects.
I'm not sure whether something broke in your head... but it sure was a good video :D
