Octavian was Caesar, as when he was adopted in Julius Caesar's will he took his name as Gaius Julius Caesar (after dropping Octavianus shortly after). by the time he defeated Antony, his legal name had changed quite a bit, but Caesar was never dropped from it.
Caesar never was an Emperor, simply dictator of Rome, like Heir said. Upon Caesar's death his protege, Octavian took the title Imperator Caesar to tell the people he was Caesar's true heir.
+That One Guy From the Party Also, people tend to forget that Imperator was a military title, specifically the highest formal rank in Roman society. Augustus' preferred title was princeps civitatus
Octavian had the title Imperator added to his name so he could always be associated with military victory, because the Romans loved that shit. After that I'm not certain if the title was only allowed for the Princeps, but when a general was declared Imperator by his troops it was generally synonymous with him trying to take over the Imperial throne. I wonder if any general was ever declared Imperator by his troops, didn't want to be emperor but had to go along with it, that would be darkly humorous especially if it cost him his life
Sextus Pompey has to be my favorite (and the most underrated and underepresented) figure in this period. He nearly killed Octavian twice (Octavian barely escaped each time), made a world of trouble for Octavian in Italy (by nature of completely blocking off the grain supply to Italy with his fleet), and was far more effective of a liberatore than Brutus and Cassius ever were.
His full name was Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius btw. Magnus because he inherited the name from Pompey the great, and then he took the name Pius because he played the role of mournful son fighting for the legacy of, and in memory of, and in revenge for, his father.

Sextus Pompey was a pirate, there is probably Pompey the Great, as is the army of Rome
9 лет назад
how is Pompey the Great, this is a great historical Bug because at that time already it should not be long, and just before his son was killed
@@mkum2141 he held onto power because he disguised himself and the Imperial institutions as Republican in nature. It was a very well known secret that he was an emperor, royal in all but name, but as long as he didn't act royal they let him stay in power. This process went on for hundreds of years until Diocletian who introduced coronations, wore a crown and reserved purple for the emperors etc. But like I said even during Augustus' day people knew it was a monarchy system, it's just some emperors acted more royal from others and the senate hated those ones
Congrats Heir in 90k+ subscribers. You really help people understand the games mechanics and how to fight on the battle map. I it weren't for people like you i probably wouldn't have purchased this game. You should start your own show on Fox! Ha
I chose Mark Antony, one thing I noticed, I fought a minor faction with 2 african elephants, and in combat the elephant units all died after a couple volleys of javelins so something isnt quite right with elephant units, loving all the other changes theyve made so far though.
Augustus was great, He was in some ways a genius, he used his gifts well to become Emporer. Gifts such as the name Caesar, a huge amount of money, he even followed his "fathers" example to create the second triumvirate. He was a great politician, a great leader, the paxa romana was a golden age and his legacy as Rome 1st Emporer. Like any leader he had flaws and at times was brutal and back handed (stealing Antony Will) but still great. I love that Total War chose to give us this, one of the most intriguing periods of Roman history, I also would of liked if it was before Brutus died and would have enjoyed killing him. Or even giving us a chance play as Brutus.
For those interested in Roman history I suggest Rubicon: the last years of the Roman Republic. Great read and a great introduction to all the big names in Roman history.
That intro is hilarious. First of all, Octavian's mother was not at all for him following in Caesar's inheritance (actually advising he not take it). Second, Octavian really wasn't a soldier. Most of his battles were won first by Antony then by Agrippa while Octavian recovered in a sickbed. He didn't really have any military victories to speak of until the war he started in Illyricum just before this game's setting. Third, Octavian was a heartless son of a gun, and while he was a far better ruler for Rome than Antony had and would have been, he also cared more about power and acquiring more power than he did about how many people would die in him getting it. This is the same man, after all, who divorced his wife the day she gave birth to his child in order to marry a more politcally profitable woman. Still, silly romanticism aside, Patch 15 looks awesome. Keep it up, Heir!
I agree. Intro is cringe-worthy of us Latinophiles. Augustus may seem cowardly but he maximised his chances' potentials. That's how Pax Romana came about. He may be less military-minded but he was smarter than his great uncle with regards to the Senate.
You were right. While Caesar certainly "ruled" like an Emperor, he didn't have title and in pure theory, during his life there was no given expectation that a member of his family would take over after his death. Hence why Rome ended up fracturing into combating/loosely allied segments after Caesar's death. By the time Octavian "Augustus" died, however, there was no question that the heir would be either a descendant or a relative of him. Thus why Augustus is the first Emperor or Rome...
Conn Iggulden has a great historical fiction series called Emperor, it's 5 books that mainly deals with Julius Caesar's youth, sullas first civil war, his campaigns in gaul and his second civil war. However the fifth book: The Blood of Gods deals with the fallout after caesar's assassination including the civil war and revenge against the Liberatores.
I don't play these games on hard+ because, I normally don't find an ass kicking "fun" I understand the challenge thing, but I like enjoyment more. Who cares if random people on the internet call you a "noob" or insult your intelligence based on the difficulty you prefer to play on. You bought the game, you're playing the game. Play how you want.
Agreed. I usually play on hard its the perfect balance, i'd play the odd time on very hard just for a change up but it can be stressful, too stressful to play it all the time. I'm playing a game not working out i wanna unwind lol
pompei is definitely my favourite faction in this campaign. it's a great challenge and you can pretty much bend either roman faction to ally with you, although trying to ally with two doesnt usually work. i went with lepidus's rome, securing my southern border while i colonized italy and then began the invasion of gaul and greece.
You are pretty much right: Julius Caesar was a dictator leading the Roman Republic. When Rome became an empire, Augustus became the first emperor, also called "Caesar", which I suppose became the word for Emperor instead of remaining just a family name. Even today the word exists: the German word for Emperor is "Kaiser", a germanized version of "Caesar" and more or less pronounced the same way.
Conn Iggulden did a great historical novel series about this Period; it is called the Emperor series and the one about the runt Octavian is called Blood of Gods- I couldn't put it down and I learned a lot too!
Heir I wish I had your luck when taking Syracuse. In my game on hard Pompey declared war on me turn 12, and when I attacked he had a single unit of vet legionnaires that was able to take my army from 40 units strong to 12, nearly by itself as it was seemingly unable to be killed by any type of missiles, and rather healthy units of legionnaires and first cohort broke within 10 secs of contact even though they had them surrounded and should have been inflicting casualties, also their gen was gone. In the end I did take it but holy hell did I lose a lot of units. Also, unrelated, I fought a unit of legionnaires that was stretched extremely thin 2 ranks deep, and it was able to defeat 4-6 8 rank deep legionnaire blocks and 3 vigiles attacking this line simultaneously at different points including the flanks with minimal losses, and no break through. Did I also mention 2 legionaries on the flank was somehow able to take a full strength cav unit down to 5 horses? I had to cav charge them from behind with gen and some 2 other cav units in the end to break them. Can anyone explain this ridiculousness to me?
Well for mercs you could buy and dismiss them at the end of turn for important battles. I used this often in early games for harder difficulties I'm usually outnumbered and maintaining an equivalent standing army would nearly halt me building and growing my economy.
Good video! You say about dificulty level and all that but you did great, destroyed a equal force who was defending a city with the enchanced stats that very hard gives and in a proportiion of 2 to 1 kills, so i think you did great. First video and there are alredy a patchy factory on rome xD i think you do it on purpose
Sanitation buildings are pretty good. I always build them and dismantle them when the province is fully grown. You should get the ones with the highest growth bonus.
my eye twitches each time Heir disregards an opportunity to squeeze talents out of diplomacy. on the second turn he probably could have gained 3000 talents just from demanding payments
With as many players as there are on RUclips now days, I doubt there is any faction going unused :) I haven't finished a Rome campaign on this game and want to do so.
HeirofCarthage There's always the next campaign, hopefully I'll get to see you as Antony later as I appreciate your videos and insight. That being said, if Antony was to crush you in this campaign I'd be rooting against you all the way :)
You guys are making it sound once you havn't played an old campaign that it won't correctly (ugh my old games...) I'm excited to see what you will do, just a quick note though with the "high interest" in trade you should just ask an payment then :D
Thanks for the video. I really like it. I played Rome TW before. Level of difficulty is one thing but your tactics need improvement. For me the footmen are only meat shields while the cavalry and archers are very important to break their morale. More flanking attacks would help
Heir my friend, use the , and . keys to cycle through your provinces. Just select one and klick them for instant magic, it also works for forces. Just remembered you saying some videos back that you wished for an easier way to go through your settlements :)
@ScottWang guys what i meant was i was calling Augustus OR his other name Octavian. Anyways my question was more to clarify my confusion didn't ceased also had a civil war involving where ceased had to goto Egypt to qulech a rebellion after Gallic conquests ??
Hey Heir, I think for the next vid you should try concentrate on fighting one army at a time instead of 2 or 3 at once. Especially when besieging cities, you do some raiding to draw an enemy out of a settlement and destroy them, so you won't have so much trouble taking settlements after.
Reading up on history can be quite time-consuming (saying this a a history student), but I'd highly recommend listening to Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast.
You can keep the campaign difficulty on very hard so you face better built armies and better campaign A.I., but you can turn the battle difficulty down to hard so that they aren't super overpowered during every battle. I also highly recommend using the "Better AI Recruitment" mod.
Hey so I can't seem to play custom battles and also two of my campaigns (Rome, Lusitania) seem to have battle problems. I'm stuck at a loading screen if I go into any kind of battle. Any thoughts? I haven't downloaded the Emperor Edition yet (at school) so I'm not sure if this problem is a mod problem that are not compatible with the patch or if something else is causing it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. By the Heir great work with your videos, I thoroughly enjoy your content.
Let's remember the valliant spirit and sacrifice of Servius Censorinus against the legions of Octavius, the courage of him and his men shall not be forgotten.
In my pc before the emperor edition i was playing normally but a bit slow, after the launch o the emperor edition my pc just can't show anything from the game, what shoul i do?
I played as Sextus Pompey yesterday and I easily steamrolled over Octavian on normal difficulty setting. Lepidus became my ally because of my war with Octavian and Antony left me alone. As of last night I have taken over all of Octavian's territory. I expected it to be WAY harder considering the level of imperium Octavian was at compared to Pompey.
Heir, you can change the battle difficulty separate from campaign difficuly. So you can play on very hard and get the campaign map challenge with lots of AI armies and have battles on hard or normal so they make more sense.
It would be cool if on the statistics screen you could highlight and/or customise it by removing stats you're not particularly bothered about or by being able to customise specific screensets. What do people think?
39:00 Oh hey Pompey is ahead of the rest of the transports; 39:39 Oh hey Pompey landed on the beach before the rest of his men did; Oh hey Pompey and his bodyguard are charging head-first into your infantry; Oh hey, Pompey has engaged your Vigiles and is vulnerable to being flanked; 41:18 Oh hey, Heir is an a perfect position to slam some of his cavalry or legionaries into the back of Pompey's bodyguard; 42:22 Oh hey, Pompey is even more vulnerable to being flanked; 42:42 Oh hey, Pompey's bodyguard are wavering and Heir has a healthy unit of cavalry about 80 feet behind them and his Legatus nearby; 42:56 Oh hey, Pompey and his bodyguard have broken and are fleeing, Heir's Legatus is in a perfect position to chase them down; 43:00 Oh hey, the Heir of Carthage is BLIND AS FUCK!
Like whats the storyline behind this, I'd appericate if someone could tell me in depth, cause I'm about to buy this version and I dont wanna play it with no knowledge on what happened in Rome at these times.
Caleb Ford yeah.. its a shame. but they are sword infantry poor in the game. which is a little too scary for most. but not me.. i love cataphracts. :-)
you're right about Octavian being the first "Emperor". As far as being called Imperator goes. Caesar was titled "dictator for life". 99% of historians would agree with you.
Only issue I have is with the name Sextus Magnus. His name was Sextus Pompey, younger brother of Quintus Pompey and their father was Pompey Magnus (Caesar's enemy). Magnus means great in latin. Pompey was awarded the title Magnus after his wars in the east, destroying the pirates, stabilizing Egypt by putting Ptolemy Auletes on the throne. Alexander the Great would of been called Alexander Magnus in roman history. Magnus means great. Its where we get word magnificent.
Is anyone else notice then when you research for lowered corruption that before the research completes and afterwards that your corruption in the provinces does not get lower? Am I the only one experiencing this?
Well this game now looks amazing. The game as it should be. Tho I had a funny bug. In civil war when you armies and agents switch sides, I had an army that did not, but agent who was embeded did and he had a lot of expirience. So he was sabotaging my army from within, so I could not move and I could not get him out. Finally I was able to get a new general close, transfer all units, disband the sabotaged general, and there the parasite agent came out. ^_^ Granted civil war happened in Beta but it did not fix itself when I continued in full version. Tho it was funny as hell when I figured out what is going on.
BTW Heir, ALWAYS try to squeeze some money from diplomatic actions that have a high acceptance. In my Octavian Campaign, I had almost 20,000 made from trade agreements/non agressions. :)
20:00 on diplomacy if it says moderate you can spam them trade agreement some times perhaps 5 times and they accept. after 5 times its no idea, they are hell bent on not trade with you then if you do not offer some coin too them. :P

Definitely agree with you Heir, the overall palette of the graphics seems earthier and richer. Really liking the aesthetic changes so far!

Heir what campaign comes after the prologue? I can't find grand campaign in your vids. Is it named differently?
Soo..many..Octavian >.>
Well but I guess I nearly like this the most ;D
I have seen more others doing non Octavian campaigns actually. Maybe we are all seeing different channels.
HeirofCarthage Yeah allready saw one with Armenia o.O Like no one the fucks plays that :D
Still searching for one Pomeii LP..
Totalmadnesman warrior of sparta does a pompey campaign.
Totalmadnesman warrior of sparta does a pompey campaign.
Rachid Barendregt nice
Heir, when you mouse over a unit, how do you get it to say, "Eager", "Confident", "Steady", "Wavering" etc.? That doesn't happen with me.
i have an issue with the new update all the roman faction are pink except octavia does anyone know what going on?
Octavian was actually related to Caesar before his adoption he was Caesars great-nephew or the Grandson of Caesars sister
Patchy is pleased he has many factories
Like whats the storyline behind this, I'd appericate if someone could tell me in depth, cause I'm about to buy this version and I dont wanna play it with no knowledge on what happened in Rome at these times.
Yet another Octavian! Nah it's ok, the faction is cool and flexible.
They also added Armenia as a playable faction, it seems like everyone forgets it lol
Caleb Ford yeah.. its a shame. but they are sword infantry poor in the game. which is a little too scary for most. but not me.. i love cataphracts. :-)
Jason D actually for Armenia their melee infantry are all axemen, making them very unique as most faction's axemen are next to useless
Jason D
I'm also playing as Armenia and hell yes...I love Cataphracts.
I did forget to mention it. Nice that they added them.
Jason D kartili axemen are some bad sons a bitches
you're right about Octavian being the first "Emperor". As far as being called Imperator goes. Caesar was titled "dictator for life". 99% of historians would agree with you.
Octavian is clearly the best leader for the Rome civil war.
Heir, you forgot to bring up the fact that a new faction has been added to the roster as well. Armenia
Hi all,
just a question, what is the 3 littles windows (red blue & green) up of the map? thx !
It's the paint tools. It allows you to draw thing on the map
+Dr.Swift Thanks :)
+Tenshi No Problem :)
So what is the name of the track about half an hour into the video? I'm guessing it's Rome 1?
Is anyone else notice then when you research for lowered corruption that before the research completes and afterwards that your corruption in the provinces does not get lower? Am I the only one experiencing this?
can u go in tesdudo formation while they got the ladder?
The commander of Pompey's Legion I you were fighting against is actually Pompey himself
How is he able to do that drawing thing in game? With the red, blue, and green?
Well this game now looks amazing. The game as it should be. Tho I had a funny bug. In civil war when you armies and agents switch sides, I had an army that did not, but agent who was embeded did and he had a lot of expirience. So he was sabotaging my army from within, so I could not move and I could not get him out. Finally I was able to get a new general close, transfer all units, disband the sabotaged general, and there the parasite agent came out. ^_^ Granted civil war happened in Beta but it did not fix itself when I continued in full version. Tho it was funny as hell when I figured out what is going on.
Octavian, Antony and Lepidus! Poor guy, everyone always forgets about him because he was a bit crap
Anybody else having the problem where by rome 2 crashes when i went a battle. this is a recent problem since the new patch.
just loaded mine and names of factions and settlements are missing as well as other bits of writing
i need your help. every time i load the game it playes fine but the words are like dots i can't read them
Do Pikeman put their pikes down or do you have to command them to do it?
I love the new map how everything is more clear now
It certainly seems to look better.
I don't know if its just me, But I played earlier and I just steamrolled pompey, Anyone else have this?
I played as Pompey and walked right up the boot and face rolled Octavian. Was on normal diff though. :/
gemsdomain It might of just been me, I had a little bit of trouble taking Sicily but other than that I just wrecked him.
U wot m9 u wnt 2 git rekt??? Pompey is by far the weakest Roman factions early on, if you take them out early they pose no threat.
This is my favorite time in roman history
BTW Heir, ALWAYS try to squeeze some money from diplomatic actions that have a high acceptance. In my Octavian Campaign, I had almost 20,000 made from trade agreements/non agressions. :)
Heir, you can have the campaign difficulty on very hard and the battle settings on normal or hard. Just go to the options and go on game settings
20:00 on diplomacy if it says moderate you can spam them trade agreement some times perhaps 5 times and they accept. after 5 times its no idea, they are hell bent on not trade with you then if you do not offer some coin too them. :P
how do you get unit numbers in the unit card ?
Julius Caesar was assassinated by rebellious senators, on March 15, 44 BC. Learned that in history class today. ;-;
‘Rebellious senators?’ Patriotic true Romans you mean? Marcus Junius Brutus, Decimus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longines, Publius Servius Casca
I was hoping for a Lepidus campaign. The poor guy always seems to be forgotten due to Antony and Augustus pushing him to the wayside.
