  • The highlights package of the 1989 Tooheys 1000 at Mount Panorama Bathurst. One for the Ford/Ford Sierra fans!
    A dominant win for Dick Johnson and John Bowe in their Shell Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, leading all laps of the race including the time during their pit stops. It would be Dick Johnson's second win, his first going to the full race distance after his crash shortened race victory in 1981 and John Bowe's first Bathurst 1000 victory after finishing second two years in a row before hand.
    Behind Johnson and Bowe in second place was Klaus Niedzwiedz and Frank Biela in the Allan Moffat Racing ANZ Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth and third place went to Jim Richards and Mark Skaife in the Gibson Motorsport HR31 Nissan Skyline GTS-R.

    1989 was Allan Moffat's last race in the Bathurst 1000 before retiring shortly afterwards, it was also Peter Brock's mum Ruth Brock's last Bathurst, as she passed away the following year in 1990, followed by Peter Brock's dad, Geoff Brock, a few years after Ruth.

    Loved the Tooheys 1000 name a 1000 times more than the James Hardie 1000 in the Bathurst 1000 race 🏁 The James Hardie company name will be forever remembered of absolute shame for what they did to so many workers for putting profit at the expense of the workers well-being & lives. Bastards the James Hardie company forever are!!

    After a long time between drinks good to see a Ford win ( 88/89 ) with Dick Johnson/John Bowe, he ( DJ ) had a few years, with Peter Brock taking victory many times, i am not denying P/Brock is good, as well as Larry Perkins.
    By 92 the DJR Sierra's were up to aprox 650hp ( about 90hp without the turbo is running in, with the turbo 650++hp, they did not give an exact figure ). I went in 1999 almost seen a Ford victory, but a flat tire put an end to that!

    • @stephenking9271
      @stephenking9271 2 года назад +2

      I think the Rs500 power figures are abit exaggerated tbh.
      T4 turbo in even a modded state is not seeing 600bhp.
      I think the best Group A Yb’s would of been around the 520/540bhp mark in honest conditions.
      I’m not doubting DJR probably ended up developing last of the great Sierra’s but power figures from 2ltrs & Group A regs is not as high as what people state/think.

      @@stephenking9271 I have been watching ATCC/V8 Supercars since the start pretty much, DJR said many times in fact those engines were capable of producing MORE HP but the problem was getting the exhaust gases out quickly enough!! In the 91 or 92 car 17 going up mountain straight changing into 4th gear 200kph++ WHEELSPIN in 4th gear!!!!! JB himself and DJ said they were over 650hp to be honest i tend to believe them these were after all $100 000++ engines, and they BEAT ALL other Ford Sierra,s etc BTCC Andy Rouse etc, the two DJR were purchased and stayed in the UK!!

    • @stephenking9271
      @stephenking9271 2 года назад +1

      @Barry Phillips
      The x2 DJR cars DJR 1&2 where prepared for BTCC next village down from me here in the UK.
      Absolutely no knocking DJ here but the engines especially in those x2 cars where not where they needed to be.
      IMO DJR prepared produced fantastic cars & the Sierras where well up there to beat ARE & Eggenhb cars actually my favourite cars are DJR 1&2 in Trackstar colour scheme. Chassis’s are awesome & DJR roll cages look mega.
      I’m a fan for sure but DJR relied on ARE @the start & bought suspension parts off Eggenbh so was a mixture of bits from across the world. After falling out with Rouse over Zytek engine management chips Dick got hold of a guy who was involved in the Rs200 management & he got him where he needed to be.
      My statement was not to doubt anything more than the quoted outputs of Grp A Yb engines, T4 modified & all Grp A trim in 2ltr form your not seeing that output but still what they achieved back then was amazing.
      Yes they achieved some great speeds I’ve read around the 180mph mark Conrad straight!!!! That’s insane lol.
      Great era great cars & huge fan of DJ.

    • @FastAsFunk
      @FastAsFunk Год назад

      Yeah > 600bhp on a T4 is a tad optimistic. No idea how they can get them to flow enough, even the bent ones...! Gp.A YBs were £20k in 1988. Not sure how that translated to AU$ back then...

    • @FastAsFunk
      @FastAsFunk Год назад

      @@stephenking9271Yeah, they'll dyno a true 560bhp with the 'breathed on' T4s that everyone used back then. Eggenberger used to wind the boost back a bit as he was tight and wanted the engines to last a bit so generally they ran a bit less unless the drivers tweaked the boost controller (it happened...!)

    Huge Rouse fan & great to see him in his ARE car with Brock.
    DJR developed great cars & really was a great era with ARE Eggengh Msport & DJR all fighting it out!
    Really was a great era & Rd car relevance/connection, cannot think pre Sierra anything that did what the Sierra did & Mitsubishi/Subaru followed suit with the Grp A rally era.
    Road car special model that could become the competition car is exactly what it should be, unfortunately end of an era for sure!

      Absolutely no doubt DJ did a fantastic job on those Sierras & no doubt about that.
      He obviously used parts from Eggenbh & bits of his own, cars were quick for sure.
      They all did very well with the Fords but I don’t think anyone specifically holds who had the fastest Sierras.
      The Bhp levels quoted Tbh were a bit on the optimistic side.
      Great era great character drivers & for me Rouse for many reasons is top of the list especially with the Sierra.
