Hi friends, when we travel, we bring as much food as possible from home. The reason is twofold; the first is that we save a ton of money. When our family goes out to eat, we spend at least 150.00, multiplied over 4 days; that is a lot. The second is that I don't know about your family, but we usually end up with upset stomachs when we eat out that much. Today I'm getting all the food ready for 4 days away, and I hope you enjoy coming along with me and seeing what I make.
    Thanks for watching!

I use cottage cheese in my lasagna too, and and my recipe from the 70's called for one egg to be stirred into each tub before spreading over the noodles. I think it thickens it up to be more like the texture of ricotta. Cottage cheese is half the price of ricotta, and easy to find in any grocery store.
I have broccoli and lettuce envy! The slugs have destroyed our scarlet runner beans, the leaf lettuce and done serious damage to the broccoli and kale. I go out every morning (and sometimes at night) and hunt them down. Its been very wet here after a dry spring, and the slugs are making up for lost time!

I just had a few tips that has helped me with traveling and getting ready in my house for when I get home. I clean my house, do laundry with getting everything ready for when getting back home and the food in the pantry too. Keep it fully ready. Also make some food to put in the freezer for when you get home. I have been doing this for a few trips and made me feel really good when I got home, and I didn't have to hurry to the grocery store until quite a few days. Thanks for sharing you're fun life and teaches us as well, I really appreciate you're family life and everything you share and have a blessed day!

We have 5 children and although most are not at home with us anymore as they are all in their 20's, I sure do remember getting ready for road trips and vacations! Lots of work but you're right, so worth it. We used to pack drinks and snacks for everyone, and if we were going to be away tried to stay in motels with kitchenettes. This wasn't always possible, and the times when we weren't able to definitely were more expensive. I didn't make meals ahead but we still saved money buying food from the grocery store and cooking our own meals. Hope you enjoy your trip. Safe travels.❤

I love gardening. Here in south Texas the heat is taking over the garden. The tomatoes are done but still getting a few Armenian cucumbers. Orkra, sweet potatoes, watermelon and peppers are doing good. I own a skin care company so I am in my shop most of the day making products. We are getting our deck ready for a 12x20 gazebo on order. We bought 3 HoseLink hoses to save my shoulders. Still need to set those up. My husband and I are 73 and great grandparents but thankfully we can work circles around those much younger.

My Uncle Tab, had a chevy truck and we would load that u. But he would leave enough room up my the window. Then we would lay our sleeping bags out for us 4 kids. My Aunt would fill a cooler for us with juices, home made granola, veggie sticks, fruit and all kinds of stuff. Then we'd get the reminder from my Uncle 'Don't drink to much we're not stopping.'. He was always about the destination and us kids were about the trip itself. I am 65 now and road trips take a lot more planning even than when we were kids. But so fun!

This brings back memories. Our family growing up always brought snacks and food on vacation, and I continued it with my children. Nothing like road snacks. We generally stayed in hotels. My dad was in India in the army for 3 years and always said that was enough of tents. We had cereal, etc for breakfast, sandwiches and fruit for lunch and generally went out for dinner. Hotels didn't have refrigerators in those days, so we always had a cooler that we had to refill.

We are taking everything we need for every meal to cook on the black stone and grill. It’s too expensive to eat out anymore. It’s just myself, and my son and his family this trip. But still for four people to eat out one meal is like close to 90.00 per meal at dinner or more. So what I save on one night pay for the groceries the entire trip. The garden looks beautiful.

We also stay in places with kitchens and bring food. Either easy to cook, home canned, or frozen with the cooler but I'm getting away from so much cooler stuff because if we stay in multiple places we have to unload it all and some of the airbnbs don't have much freezer space if they're a primary residence.

A time saver: If you have a casserole dish as long as your pasta, put them in the dish and pour boiling water from your tea kettle over them and in about 20-25 minutes they’ll be Al dente and ready to form your lasagna. I’ve been doing this the last couple years instead of waiting for boiling water on the stovetop. You can add a little olive oil in your water or spray them with cooking spray if you get any sticking.

Hi let me make you chuckle: i grew up travelling. We spent alot of time in canada over on the rideua ( rido) spelling? Anyway back then a restaurant or diners were few n far between so my mother would do exactly what youre doing we had a camper to cook in ...imagine no fast food joints 😅

My gosh you were superwoman today! Wanted to tell you I went out to a friends farm and we picked sand plums yesterday. Cooked them down and made jelly last night. Sand plum jelly is the best and most sought out in the Midwest. Not available in any stores. It’s a homemade find! For me it’s the fondest memory of mine. When I smell those plums boiling on the stove I’m with grandma in the kitchen!(happy tears)
    Have you ever seen them?

Time very well spent! Not only saved a ton of money but also way better nutritionally than about anything you're going to get out to eat.

What's new in NH: RAIN for days. Everything is very green, the garden is managing to grow despite not as much sun . I've started to harvest herbs to dehydrate ( so wish for a freeze dryer!!) Went strawberry picking ( my dog helps herself to most of my strawberries...) and put up some strawberry jam, pickled garlic scapes. I watch how well you take care of your family, ❤You are such a good mama!! Hope you have a safe trip!!

We are in Southeast Missouri, and are in an excessive heat warning for tomorrow and Friday. Suppose to have heat indexes of 115! We are already in a drought and no burn ban. Fourth of July will be without fire works for our area. We are farmers, so this is an extremely rough patch for us. I know you all have had horrible wild fires. Safe travels!
