It's really good to know who or what you're up against in life. I train new employees in my field, building confidence through experience is irreplaceable in our field. I think i can safely assume this is similar for most occupations and sports
I remember my second year of Muay Thai I started loosing interest and showing up everyday. Sir starts picking me up and kept asking what’s wrong, I told him I’m not getting any better! I can’t beat any teammate we have here. He told me I am way better, he told me in those two years multiple people have started, and only a handful have made it. He told me that he knows I won’t going full force but can beat them all, he said to humble myself and realize that they have been there longer than me so they will always have a upper hand just like I am, but never doubt my progress.
My first sparring session was against Chris Clement’s and chad Laprise when I was 20 years old both of them were in the UFC at the time. The day the fun began
Most impressive to me was what he did with Josh Barnett. I trained at the same gym as Josh when he was living in WA and I grappled with him a few times. Each and every time it was like a lamb being led to slaughter. I was a good high school wrestler at 189 but Josh was on another planet compared to me. Then, I see him fight DC in Strikeforce and him getting rag dolled made me realize there’s great grapplers like Josh and then there are Olympic level grapplers.
Basically, it's like getting your ass whooped cuz you think some random pot belly guy just ragdolled you. Then you find out he's actually a beast in his sport and you feel that it's an honor to spar with him. I'd be stoked.
