Thank you for your great tutorials! I’ll be making my first lampshade as soon as all of my supplies are delivered. Your tutorials are very informative so I feel like I’m very well prepared!
WoW what a great tutorial Susan!! thankyou so much...you showed every detail of this process so clearly. I finally have my lampshade on the table....its only taken me 12 months since i saw your first video to make a start... I hope it doesnt take me 12 months to finish it! haha :) Thankyou again and very lucky lady who bought the lampshades from you...they look AMAZING!!! You do beautiful work x
Enjoyed this tutorial! Looking forward to making my first lamp... I look forward to providing an update. Thankyou for both the clear instructions and the inspiration. 🌷🌷🌷
Oh, ive just seen you provided a link for frames with lots of options you cant find elsewhere!, this is a great help! its unfortunate i cant find any place in USA that has frames. Hopefully they will ship to US without a huge price. Edit: they do not ship outside UK. if anyone knows a place that does ship to USA that has these types of great frames please let me know. Im most interested in tulip, umbrella, or "drawing room" shapes!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I loved that you actual showed each step and explained everything so perfectly! Been looking for a video like this for so long! What material do you suggest for the lining,?
Hi Lori - Thank you so much for your kind comments and I am glad you were able to follow the instructions. I use a heavy weight fire retardant natural cotton fabric which you can get on Ebay in the UK but any good quality cotton fabric would be fine. Good luck and send me a picture of the lampshade you make when it is completed - I would love to see it. x
Thank you. I like the pace of your teaching. I don’t get bored. You are very clear. Questions- what weave and content of fabric do you recommend? Do you ever bind the vertical bars on the shade frame? Where does one buy Victorian shape lamp shades?
Many thanks Paula - great to have such positive feedback. I am in the UK and there is a link on the videos to my frame supplier. Otherwise why not buy a vintage frame from a Charity shop, strip it down and use that instead. xxx
No “shade” on you (lol), but technically that’s not “from scratch” I excitedly clicked thinking I finally found someone to show me how to make the frame! 😭, the search continues. (I need to have control over the frame shape for my Big Plan,🤷♀️.)
I have a question about the lining panels. Did you use the same pattern for both the outside as well as the inside lining? My lining was too large, it was bunching up quite a lot so I took in the seams a bit - it's still sort of bunchy, not super smooth and flat like yours, it kind of hast pleats for the access fabric.
If you are balloon lining the shade then you need to cut the internal panels smaller. Otherwise if you are placing the lining over the outer frame use the same size as the outer cover.
It’s very beautiful, I’ll like to see on a closeup how you did the stitches for the tape, and when you were putting the trim was it on the inside or just on top of the stitches?
Stunning!! Question: when choosing your fabrics are you looking for ones with stretch? I noticed you used a cotton lining on this one my thought is this would have no stretch. Glad I found you. I'm going to give it ago. Thank you so much for freely sharing your talent. 💖🌺
@@susanscraftcabin thanks for getting back to me. Are you meaning that even non stretch fabric cut on the bias will allow the fabric to stretch? I did catch that you said to use stretch fabric for lining is that correct? 😀
Hi Susan, Janet from Australia, what type of fabric is your lining please, I am in love with these shades and and am thrilled with your fab tutorials, thanks and cheers
Thank you for the great video. Instead of stitching the panels together, can I attach them directly to the frame with a glue gun? Then cover the adhesive marks with braid stripes?
Hi, fantastic tutorial. Silly question, but when you are sewing the panels together on the sewing machine does it matter what stitch you use. Sorry, I'm just starting to use a machine. Many thanks, Nicky x
@@susanscraftcabin thank you so much. I am going on a 4 day lampshade retreat tomorrow I am so excited. I have made a lined shade before but I want to learn more techniques 🤗
Thank you for the video. It would have been much more helpful if you showed in this video how you measured, cut and sewed the shade fabric pieces because these steps are the most difficult ones. Anyway still a great video. good luck
HI Judy - I don't make my own beading because that is a specialism in itself. I have done so in the past and it really take a very long time which is why all beading is very expensive to make or buy.
Curiosity is killing me. I have 2 very large lampshades to recover ( my kittied destroyed them.), The sides have a swoop;;kinda like a womans shape. My question is why did you not sew the lining to the outside at the top and then pull it down the frame????
So beautiful, so talented. Who ever gave you a thumbs down needs a clip around the ear. 🙄🤣
You are very kind. Thank you so much
Jealousy in a mean thing!!
Gorgeous. I think this now establishes the beginning of a binge watch…! Great tutorials, thank you!

Brilliant - can't wait to see your creation Alyson

So beautiful many thanks from Indonesia❤❤❤❤
Wow! I really like this and now want to do it!
Brilliant news x
Love your videos Susan! Thanks for sharing your amazing talents and knowledge!
You are so welcome!
This is a great tutorial. I'm going to tackle doing a couple shades I have that have tears in the cloth. thanks for posting this.
Glad it was helpful!
Very lovely thank you for sharing I love your fabric and all the elements you chose go really good together ❤
bellas tus lamparas
Gorgeous!! ♥
Thank you for your video!❤
I used some curtain material - very difficult to stretch - I thought it would rip the seams, by it stayed together. Thanks for the tutorial.
Did you cut the fabric on the bias, Al. Also it depends on the fabric - natural fabrics are best.
Thanks !
Beautiful shade! I’m inspired, thank you ♥️ ( and a new subscriber )

How do you make the frame?
I don't make the frames
Bravo 👏 magnifique...
No “shade” on you (lol), but technically that’s not “from scratch” I excitedly clicked thinking I finally found someone to show me how to make the frame! 😭, the search continues. (I need to have control over the frame shape for my Big Plan,🤷♀️.)
Why don't you contact the frame makers and ask if they could make you a frame to your own design.
I have a question about the lining panels. Did you use the same pattern for both the outside as well as the inside lining? Hi Claudia thank you for the feedback - will try to give more close ups next time.
It's beautiful... Where can one but all the different assorted Victorian frames to make different sizes etc and wall lamps.
There is a link to my UK supplier below the videos.
Do you use Fabric Fire Gard on the linings? I’m worried about silk linings.
I use fire retardant linings and fire guard on the outer fabric
@@susanscraftcabin thank you!!!
Where do u tend to buy your materials/frames from please? Im loving all your work... very impressive
I just search the internet for fabrics. If in the UK there is a link to Homemaking Heaven who supply the frames.

Always cut the fabric on the bias - I show you how in my first video. Cutting on the bias allows the fabrics to stretch.
Hi Janet, I usually use fire retardant heavy weight Calico as a lining. Hope this helps
Thank you for the great video. Instead of stitching the panels together, can I attach them directly to the frame with a glue gun? Then cover the adhesive marks with braid stripes?
You can but the shade won't last as long
You are a very talented lady, the shades are just magic. I am in New Zealand and cannot find supplies here ie frames. Any suggestions?
Hello Barbara from New Zealand. I wish I could help you but I am afraid I only know of frame makers in the UK.
Hi, fantastic tutorial. Silly question, but when you are sewing the panels together on the sewing machine does it matter what stitch you use. Sorry, I'm just starting to use a machine. Many thanks, Nicky x
Not at all xx
Wow, these are great tutorials and beautiful lamps, can I ask do you use fire retardant fabric or do you use a spray?
Both!
How do you make the molds or patterns? Thanks love it! 🥰👁️💞✨🪞
Check out my other videos, Maria
All of your lampshades are so lovely I was wondering where you get the frames from ?
Homemaking Heaven in the uk - link on video.
@@susanscraftcabin Thank you 💖
Beautiful, thank you so much for the tutorial! One quick question- how do you secure the cotton tape? Just a simple knot or... Thanks :)
Stitch the ends together!
Hi Susan I tried sewing the pieces and that was a disaster.. can you please tell me how to sew it correctly 😢
Hi Susan! Can you recommend what linings to use? Thanks so much!
Fire retardant cotton calico is cost effective
@@susanscraftcabin thanks so much Susan!
Wow absolutely beautiful. Do you have a website or link where you get your beading from its so beautiful. Thank you
I just go online and look for vintage beading where I can
@@susanscraftcabin Thanks so much for replying. I will try this!
Please could you tell me the seam allowance you use. Thank you
You cut the fabric on the bias exactly the size of the panel - no seam allowance as the fabric stretches to fit.
Thank you but where to buy the lamp shade frame?, Thank you
If in the UK the link is under the videos
Beautiful shades. What thread do you sew with 🤗
I use very strong threads
@@susanscraftcabin thank you so much. I am going on a 4 day lampshade retreat tomorrow I am so excited. I have made a lined shade before but I want to learn more techniques 🤗
Where do you get the beading and fringing from please?
All over the place but mainly Amazon or Ebay
Hi what glue sticks do you use?
Just standard glue sticks
hello I would like to know where to buy your carcass lampshade thank you
I buy the frames from various sources in the UK. The link is in the description under the video.
Thank you for the video. It would have been much more helpful if you showed in this video how you measured, cut and sewed the shade fabric pieces because these steps are the most difficult ones. Anyway still a great video. good luck
She has another video explain how to cut and sew rhe pieces together. She then has another video showing how to line the inside.
Thank you Casslie. x

Where do you get the tassel fringing from?
You can buy it on Aliexpress or Amazon
How do you make your own beaded strip design.? The one you used looks like it’s factory made .
HI Judy - I don't make my own beading because that is a specialism in itself. I have done so in the past and it really take a very long time which is why all beading is very expensive to make or buy.
I have tons of fabric but I'm having a real challenge of finding frames is there a website for this?
If in the UK try homemaking heaven. The link is below some of the videos.
How do you make the shade fire retardant?
Use fire retardant spray on the finished shade.
Alas for I search long and hard for how to make the frame.
I buy my frames ready made
Curiosity is killing me.
I have 2 very large lampshades to recover ( my kittied destroyed them.),
The sides have a swoop;;kinda like a womans shape.
My question is why did you not sew the lining to the outside at the top and then pull it down the frame????
There is no right or wrong way to make a lampshade. This is just the way I was taught to make them over 40 years ago by a Master Lampshade maker.
Hello Susan, can you do lampshade for me please? How I can contact you?
