    I've carried a 940 for years love that knife! Then a little over a year ago I bought a bugout in ranger green and I have carried it almost everyday since. For an EDC it's hard to beat. Yea I still rotate other knives into my carry but probably 27 out of 30 days I carry the bugout.

    It's as strong as it will ever need to be. I took mine camping several times before I lost it and it was up to every task I put it through. That small amount of squish in the scales literally means nothing. If you're using a Bugout to baton or pry you're doing it wrong.
    I miss that little thing.

    I liked the bugout as an EDC knife so much I have two. A blue one set up for left hand carry and a green one with custom linen micarta scales for right side carry. The light weight is one of my favorite features. My gun and extra mags are where most of the weight on my belt comes from and I like it that way.
    There are plenty of knives in the cheaper market, too many really. Virtually everything CRKT makes is in that market. I have knives that are 5, 6 or 7 ozs. But instead, I wanted a knife that's super light, very thin, solid lock, deep carry clip, and great steel. The bugout is great at what it was made to do.

    Glad to see your thoughts on this knife Jeff!
    I’ve got a ranger green bugout myself and I love it.
    Sure, it’s not as solid as my Griptillian 551-1, however for general EDC cutting I seriously doubt it’ll break.
    I’m using it to cut cardboard etc not baton trees or survive on a desert island for a week.
    Gotta agree the scales are a bit on the sharp side, but they’re not the worst thing ever.
    Also as a lefty I love the axis lock.

    I love the lanyard hole. I use the outer layer of some blaze orange paracord as my lanyard. This way if I drop the knife on the trail it's easier to see. This knife paired with a 4" fixed blade is awesome in the woods when I'm trying to put in miles and carrying a heavy ruck.

    Hey Jeff, you should try the Gerber Sharkbelly. Its 2.3oz 420HC with great heat treat, and best of all its about $30!
    I've had mine for over a year now and its been awesome. Probably has the most pocket time of all my EDC knives. Its friendly looking for non knife lovers and it has a super deep carry paperclip style clip. It keeps its sharpness and it extremely easy to sharpen.
    Over all its been a super awesome budget priced edc knife.

    I really love the bugout, I look at it every time I go to the local gun shop. The only problem is I have been feeling the weight = quality thing, so the bugout has been a new challenge for me because the handles throw me off... that being said I still somehow love it and it’s gonna be my next purchase going into summer!! The lightweight should be a big plus now that shorts weather is in!

    I tried one out I wasn't a fan of it but it does feel better then the old plastic scale griptilian. Those were so bad in the hand, my girlfriend got me one of the ones in 154cm and I love the knife because she gave it to me but the handles we're awful and I needed to replace them. Didn't feel that way with the bug out.

    Agreed with the price range. But the weak point on the bugout is the infamous omega spring. It split in half within a month! I’ve since got it repaired (excellent customer service)and enjoy it as an edc but can’t rely on it solely

  • @mt_baldwin
    @mt_baldwin 5 лет назад

    I think it's the size to weight that's the selling point, for a sub 2 oz. Knife with a 3.25" inch blade or longer there's a very small selection. As to the toughness, do you veiw cold steel folders as weak? Many of them are built with no liners with g10 scales and this glass reinforced plastic is much tougher than g10 (before anyone argues this please look up the difference between strength and toughness).

    • @mt_baldwin
      @mt_baldwin 5 лет назад

      And I'm not a benchmade fan, my bugout is my first and last benchmade, I'm defending the grn plastic material, not benchmade.

      Genghis Chuan If you got rid of it because you don't like the design, that's legit and you're entitled to your opinion and liking what you like. If you're claiming to have "hard used" it to some sort of failure, you're a liar. For 99% of users, it'll perform fine.

    • @seanf5760
      @seanf5760 4 года назад

      @Genghis Chuan I've had mine for over a year now. Used and abused on the regular. Not a single component has broken, the coating is still mostly on the blade and clip, and there's no major damage to anything... oh yeah, and I batoned with it a bunch of times to make kindling and it didn't break.

    • @seanf5760
      @seanf5760 4 года назад +1

      @Genghis Chuan you'd have to have seriously mistreated the knife to break it, given that many knife channels as well as myself have even done some light batoning with the knives and they've been fine.

    I’m THE guy with a lanyard on his bugout! I’ve putted a little piece of paracord only because i use it at my job. I’m a welder and the less metal dust and sparks i have on my knife the better i am lol(i put it between a leather pouch for my tape bla bla bla and the pouch of my leatherman surge). The lanyard is a good way to not have to search too long for it because sometimes it really goes deep in my pocket. I only grab the little piece of paracord to get it out! It looks good and is really lightweight as well!

    Love the idea of a budget Bugout, but you mentioned Aus 8 or 440c. Of those two id definitely go 440c. I feel it would be in their best interest to stick with a US steel so they can truly say its an all american knife for 40-50 dollars.

    I still prefer the Manix lightweight over the bug out. Chunkier but feels more rigid. Also s110v for about the same price. I agree with you about the steel/price. They could have used 440c or something along those lines. 12c27 or whatever. To me, the Manix lw, native 5 lw, and the buck 110 lw in the micarta with s30v are better values with the same design philosophy.

    I think in the end, it turned out better for Benchmade going with S30V for this knife instead of a cheaper steel. If I purchased this knife and wanted put after-market scales on it, I feel that I would get more value out of the upgrade. You probably wouldn't buy this knife for 50 dollars if it had an AUS-8 or 440C blade and then spend twice that much to outfit it with nice titanium scales. That actually might have been the only reason for some people buying this knife.

    If they put cheap steel on it a first time buyer for $50 still wouldn’t be happy because the knife wouldn’t stay sharp and might actually lose customers in the long run. Knife people mostly understand you pay for what you get most of the time. If they put thin metal liners it would be and feel much more solid and people would be happy. For example spyderco G-10 dragonfly small but super solid. Hope I made sense😂

Or just offer the red class again and compete with the Chinese market. There are certain Chinese brands that have really stepped up their game and for $40-$60 you can get a hell of a knife. I also dont understand the quarter inch folding splitting mauls that everyone likes. If you need a knife like that then get a fixed blade. I like sleek and thin blades that slice very well. Such as this bugout, but one thing my coworker and I talked about, was making a new version of the bugout with g10 and full liners. Call it something else or whatever, make it a custom option on their website, throw 154cm on it and cut 60 dollars off the price.

    Benchmades are seriously over priced by 30+ dollars with each of their knives. A good example is the 940 (g10 version) vs the spyderco para3... Both g10, both s30, similar enough locks (fingers stay out of the blade path) the 940 is $175, and the para 3 is around $130.
    Then look at the para 3 light weight, $99... The bugout is $120-135...
    Zt? $250 got me the 0562cf which uses real carbon fiber, titanium, cpm 20cv steel, and a great action. Benchmade? $250 got me the limited freek in g10, m4 steel and lock stick...
    I love Benchmades but I can't justify the money for their products, especially considering I've got 10 over the past couple years and every single one had Q.C issues. So fuck em.

    people are always looking into aftermarket options and add-ons for this knife. as for me, I love this knife the way it is. it is controversial because Benchmade has challenged our idea of what "just enough" means for a quality knife, and they have succeeded. yes, plastic isn't the highest quality material, but it doesn't need to be. It's lightweight, affordable, durable enough for the knife's purpose, and perfectly fits the Bugout's mantra of minimalism.
    as the old saying goes, great design is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but rather when there is nothing left to take away.

    This knife IMHO is the ideal edc knife. The name is poor, it wouldn’t work well in a bugout environment, it’s to light. But for day to day use it’s almost perfect. Of course it’s a Benchmade and expensive, both negatives. The fact that it flexes protects the blade. One isn’t going to pry with it out of fear it would break, back to the name Bugout, so it will last. I don’t hear many stories of them coming apart, but I’m sure they have when missed used.

  • @Obliticus
    @Obliticus 3 года назад

    I'd bet $60 of the price of the Bugout goes entirely to engineering, warranty services, etc. So even if they made it with 8CR steel, it would still cost $80+ and no one is going to pay that much for an 8CR knife.
