Hey GM! Great interview! Greetings from Don on the west Coast!
Another great interview. Great to hear the history of the Villasin family and how it all started with Balintawak. Wish you all the best in Jacksonville, FL.
It was definitely insightful hearing about the lineage of Balintawak as taught by GM Villasin's father. He and GM Taboada said the same thinking, "Balintawak is the same procedure, just different hands and thinking that will teach you." We appreciate that message.
Thank you GM Villasin for sharing your story and history of your father and Balintawak. Interesting to hear how your father structured the art so others can understand and learn the system better. Salamat and pugay.
In any martial art, individuals want to know the curriculum (syllabus) to see how they can gauge their progress. A structured format allows people to work on focus and on a certain skill set before going onto the next.

Pain is a teacher & motivator its the difference between point sparring karate versus kickboxing. Knowing pain & how to deal with it is an essential self-defense skill. Personally I didn't value what I learned as a child until I started training and sparring at full speed all of a sudden I could do the techniques at will after that I applied it to my other training and got those things to work too.
Totally agree with what you're saying. The old school of training is hard to find nowadays especially in the Western World. The term "accept the pain" or what you said "pain is a great teacher" is something missing in current times, especially in commercial spaces. Since mainstream martial arts now cater to the children, women and family classes - teaching the old school way would push them away. Everything now revolves around safety, so things have to be toned down.
