The song's descending opening riff played on a Rickenbacker bass, the ringing Rickenbacker lead, and Foxton and Weller trading off vocals breathlessly... does anyone do it better?
Spring of 1980, a buddy of mine shows up at the apartment with this song and Joe Jackson's, "I'm the Man". To say it refocused my musical taste overnight, is a huge understatement. two and a half minutes of pure greatness.
Must of been a breath of fresh air for young TOTP viewers seeing the Punk/New Wave bands coming through in 1977 as most of the year it was MOR Rock and more so American R'n'B, Soul Ballads and Disco as it seemed the Top 30/40 was commercial soul station.
I grew up listening to The Jam. Loved the music and had a serious crush on Paul Weller. He's now a man, his music has changed, I have loved all his music, Style Council and his solo stuff. Favourite Jam song....funny enough In the City or the Bitterest Pill, Style Council It didn't matter or You're the Best Thing.........solo Above the Clouds
The Jam were about the best of the english bands from that era and they never wore torn clothes, nor put safety pins in their ears nor died their hair purple. They were not Punk. I liked them back then.
Interestingly this is a slightly different version, recorded in the BBC studios pre-show. As I recall this was a requirement of the Musicians Union and only certain bands were required to do it, chosen randomly, to 'prove' that they had actually performed on their own single.
it was about 11 years after the beatles career peak in my opinion, anything released after revolver is too esoteric and excessive for my taste. dont get me wrong theres still nuggets of gold to be found in the beatles later discography but this is just a matter of opinion
Oh stop. Brian isn't wrong. And neither is the o.p. Beatles peak was '67-'69. This song came out around '77. But had written and played couples years before. Around this time was Ramones, Sex Pistols and Clash were gaining popularity. Just enjoy the music the message.
@Paul Rodriguez Groups hyped as much as the Beatles are bound to have idiotic fans (I like the Beatles, don't get me wrong). Don't forget, you don't earn any money from claiming that your group's superior to another. Just ignore them.
And it's pretty clear how many people absorbed The Jam ,I was devastated when he broke them up, but I also knew no-one else would have had the guts or integrity. Look at The Flash's last year.
1970's curly guitar leads. What were they all about, I managed to find one a few years back and understood immediately why they died out, if you move more than a few feet away from your amp the springiness pulls them out. Great track BTW saw The Jam many a time when I was a young'un.
They sell at £25 in some shops now, but they look solid. See through red or green and you see the cable in there. I had instant faith in them on sight.*****
i have one that i still use today. it's about 40ft coiled, which ends up being about 20ft. still plenty of length for me.and personally i think they sound better....but that's just my opinion.
The Jam's In The City was recorded first, the Sex Pistols recorded Holidays In The Sun afterwards, the Sex Pistols did steal the riff from this song for theirs !
Riff? It's just a simple chord progression. These were kids playing simple songs. It's the same reason so many chuck Berry songs sound the same or Ramones songs sound the same. This song (which I think is very mediocre in any case) doesn't sound anything like Holidays in the Sun (which, IMO, is a great song) other than the intro bit. If you listen to music you'll here the same chord progressions, patterns, riffs, etc over and over.
@MrRETEROROB it good to hear a `stateside` jam fan `cos they never made it big in the US but as weller said `neither did the small faces or egg and chips`
Finally, some punk breaks into the top of the pops reruns on bbc4. This was on the same episode as the bay city rollers and some 70s woman doing a duet with a punch and judy puppet. About fucking time.

@dw69ful `city` was released long before `holidays` apparently sid viscious ( i love the pistols but i think sid was a total prat) said he was going to beat weller up for ripping of the song -not that sid wrote or played on any pistols stuff
@tarkusmjg I totally agree. I saw the Jam in the 70's several times. They were young, eager and angry. Weller's writing had a real edge to it considering he really was nothing more then a kid when he wrote most of it. I don't fault him for the direction change but it's not the Weller I grew up with and not the music that I so loved.
Someone HELP please. There was a studio live performance from The Jam and Weller really went for it in the outro, thrashing his chords out. Please tell me what the song was. Thanks.
Is it his for real? Was that an alternate studio recording or was this really live? Many shows back in those times particularly in England were not actually performed live. If that was actually live, The Jam is the greatest 3 piece in history!!

Still as fresh as it was in 1977. Classic song.
strange how no one has mentioned Bruce Foxton, What an amazing Bass player, just as much of an icon as Weller
all jam fans know what a bass player bruce is and also what a drummer Rick is its not all about nPaul
Paul was the best songwriter in The Jam but the third-best musician. Never had him down as a Guitar Hero
