I was thirteen living in Manchester and all my friends Black, White , and Asian danced and sang to these SKA songs from The Beat, The Specials,The Selector, Madness and Bad Manners, Great Days ,no money in are pockets no fancy trainers on are feet no labels on are clothes but plenty FUN & Laughter thank you .RIP Roger
Sometime in the very early 00s I saw Rankin roger play a show with a random assortment of musicians. I had not heard of the beat then , but they played a few of the more uptempo beat songs , and some stuff that sounded more Ragga. Amongst the performers was someone who was either Rogers son or nephew. He looked just like him at around 17 and did incredible vocals and skanking just like Roger. Was cool to see! I was a similar age at the time and the contrast of me and this confident performer Rankin Roger Junior could not have been more different to me who could barely speak to a stranger!
Very grateful that I came of age with these guys. I was born in ‘62. Saw them with The Clash in ‘83 twice at the Hollywood Palladium, and again at UCLA in ‘85 as General Public.
The sound of my youth, didn't really appreciate it at the time, looking back now it evokes emotions and memories. I don't take it for granted anymore, I miss it
I'll never forget when I first heard this. It was played as a new release on a teatime radio show on BBC Radio One. It sounded amazing, and it still does. What a great time to be a 2 Tone fan.
I remember ranking Roger I'm 55 now I used to play in the arcade game shop in Stretford I used to play the space invader with him and my friends good memories
Good grief! Was the audience told to sit still? Bloody hell...I've loved this song/band since 79. I've got the 45's, the Lp's & 12"...The Beat were so cool. I used to pretend I was Ranking Roger, in my bedroom wardrobe mirror. My brother hated me for posing, but I didn't care. Some band members may have past on, but they and their music, will live forever!
The audiences were better back then. These days the audience wants to be the start of the show. I can't hear the bands for all the phoney whooping and cheering.
I was a light English Beat fan. But with today's music being the way it is. I have been getting into the deeper tracks of the English/ Beat, Rick James and the Vinyl's, It's been good stuff too!
Not just about narcissisism but the cocaine addiction that can bring it. Mirrors and reflections, "You can watch yourself while you are eating"; you can see yourself taking this stuff, destroying yourself inch by inch and self justifying your own excesses: "All my crimes are self defense, a true reflection of my own true self..."
One the best from the Two-Tone Jukebox. Which led to ulltra hedonism and the 'New Romantics'. Ho-hum. Though some interesting electropop appeared, through the cracks in the slap. Then Britpop. KERRANG!
They came to Belfast in 1980 check this out..madness. the specials the.beat an the selector .unfortunately back then u had to run the gauntlet to get home if u didn't want a beating because u were from the wrong end of town
Love TOTP'S even though its all lip-synch.ove The Beat or as we in theU.S. knew them The English Beat. WhT Is Beat? Has so many great songs. If yousee it, grab it.
Jesus_ he was only 17 here. Wow! Ranking Roger RIP. 😥

Thanks to you, I’ve only just learnt about Ranking Roger’s death. So young. Very sad. RIP Roger. 😥💐

This song defined Ska for me - 44 years ago. And it still does.
It unfortunately took me years to appreciate just how good this is. Better late than never.
We were spoilt at that time, terrific stuff from so many great bands
That bass line is fabulous.
Timeless! One of the best songs of all time 👍
Iconic ska!
The sound of my youth, didn't really appreciate it at the time, looking back now it evokes emotions and memories. I don't take it for granted anymore, I miss it
loved the way rankin roger moved on stage so carefree
I always aspired to move like Rankin Roger. But I am a 60 year old white man with 0 rhythm.
I can vividly remember the 1980’s and all of the brilliant Ska music. The Beat was one of my favourites. RIP Ranking Roger. 😢💐
Gone but not forgotten. RIP Roger Legend.
Wasn't this in 79
So the first thing that comes to mind is ska? In the 80s?
Rest in peace Ranking Roger, 2/21/63 - 3/26/19
rip
Crazy to think he was only 18 in this footage
I do believe he was born in 1961 not 63.
Now this is music,
Living through the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and 00's musically was pure heavenly and so diverse
The dross nowadays no comparison
We took it all for granted back then. On a week by week basis.
True

Imagine us in the US when we first heard it !!! LOL 60yrs old next month and wouldnt trade those days for ANYTHING
I remember ranking Roger I'm 55 now I used to play in the arcade game shop in Stretford I used to play the space invader with him and my friends good memories
RIP Saxa
a.k.a. Lionel Augustus Martin.
Inspiration to myself and many others.
Inimitable in tone and style.
At 14 I remember getting this, rat race and too much too young
1980?? Bloody hell! Where have the last 33 years gone? Still got the vinyl album.. ;)
cherish it and the memories, call the people that the song reminds you of, have a great one
Where have the last 41 years gone?
Still here
44 now.
That was a great track. I still remember it...after 43 years!
Loved Tommy Vance - he knew a good record even if it wasn't his favourite heavy rock genre and wasn't afraid to say so - as he does at the end.
Bring them days back 80s we’re the best
Great song !!! Great sax
Takes me back to all the amazing dancing in the 80s ...come out of a concert soaking wet and revived ...shake off the work week demons
The best song ever written about narcissism. A Mod Classic.
Identity by X-ray Specs is pretty much on the mark.
Nothing to do with revival Mod.
@@kevbrooks Everything to do with the Mod revival, Why do you say that ?
London in the 80s had so much good music coming from many great bands.
you know The Beat were from Birmingham
@@GrimUpNorth_yt yes the bands were from all over the UK but London was like the centre and they all played London at the famous venues.
They are on tour in UK this month
@@jamieorourke767 hi Jamie, will you lucky enough to go see them ?
Ive settled in Brisbane now so not so many chances for me..
Love this track.👍

Loved this amazing group. Black & white. Truly amazing. Made incredible music that I will treasure until I die 👍
Brilliant, Hypnotic and Timeless Hit 🎷🎙🎸🎶🥂
Great band and the most intriguing lyrics of any ska band at that time.
The song is about narcissism. IMO, it's the best track of the mod / ska revival of the late 70's.
@@jacklyn.sentek No, that was 'Tears of a Clown'. First single, on Two Tone, 1979. The one here is from 1980.
Such a fantastic band 'Twist and craw' was just an outstanding sound.
...and click click is a stormer too
Click click
Great song by a brilliant band
I love how both singers are smirking at the hysterical lyrics. Great song. I listen all the time, the CD is in my car :)
I think they laughed at the awful lip syncing ... everyone did it.
Sting had a beat T Shirt on in a Police vid

Rest in Peace _ Ranking Roger. Ska man.

Same here. The music that back then was "some other tribe's" is now our music and there are seams of back history to plunder.
What a track this is from a fantastic band
All my heroes are going one by one, RIP Ranking
Love the beat 💓
This was a golden time for SKA. Taking the Jamaican style scank jazz and adding the Punk beat. Brilliant.
Brill’.
Amazing song. Love everything about it.
Omg! You’ve just been invited to Top of the Pops!
Bring me my cleanest t shirt.
Loved their first two albums, bought the third one as well, but wasn't overly impressed with it. Loved this song! Still do!
Save the 3rd album for later. You'll enjoy it
One of TOP5 Bands on this "TOTP 1963-1996"
2 guitar players went on to form fine young cannibals
Geil auf einem Treffen die Gelegenheit mal wieder was altes geniales Two Tone mäßig zu hören
Lucky us who were kids in the eighties
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Luckier still in the 70s.
How cool
Loved this
The most rock'n'roll looking reggae band I've seen. A Brian Jones Vox teardrop guitar and a Lemmy style Rickenbacker bass???
Just saw The Beat in Berkeley CA 2023 - amazing show! And man, ska bands sure hold up better than punk bands, playing their same stuff.
R.I.P. Everett Morton. ☹

Totally cool 😎 I forgot about this song until recently ❤ takes me back to the 80s

Take me to my youth
Fascinating difference between band and audience. Britain was changing at breakneck speed in '79.
geekpie100 I watched this whole thing fr 1963, I noticed the change in 1977. (for the better. Consistently better)
Rest in peace Everett Morgan x
Sorry Morton
Fancy footwork from David Steele 👌
Where British Ska began...
This is music ! 🎶
One of my faves 👌🏻😎
You can tell she's smart and an honest person. Hope she wins this case for her dad. 🙏
A classic 😊
Fantastic song
Ska ,mod early eighties ,black kids and whites kids as one against the establishment, great times .
Me too and the General Public album as well !
Bad hair day for Dave. I used to have the same haircut and found water on a comb was very good for flattening those annoying tufts !
that sax !!!!!
❤❤❤ - ORIGINALS 🎶🎵
FAB :)
R.I.P. Everett Morton.
luv the sax
I was never into the two tone thing…but this is a great track
Second year I had been watching 1980

Ahh.. the good ol' days of 78s and 12 inches
Legendary Saxa
I’ve come back decades later just to confirm that the bloke in the sweater was as bad a dancer as I remembered him to be. Cracking tune though.
Elaine Benes!
The best of British 👀🙏
RIP Roger and Saxa.
Ranking 100%
