To those that didn't live through the 80's...a song of this stature came out every week for the entire decade....THATS HOW MUCH MUSIC WE CREATED...... that's why it's still being listened to nearly a half-century later.

I'm 58 and every once in a while I'll tell a young person of in their 20's that I envy you age but not your music. I was living in Orange County and 30 minutes from KROQ in Pasadena before they got eaten up by "the corporations." What great music. Only the mid 60s surpasses the diversity and creativeness of the early & mid 80s.

The late-1970s is when it started here in the Los Angeles area. Small venues with punk, ska, reggae, metal, hard rock & roll; diversity was the key. You could call it a "rebellion" against the prog rock & vocalists that had taken over the radio airwaves.

This video shows up in my YT feed every year and I hold my breath, force back some tears, and watch it. I'm in my early 60s and have seen music cycle during different periods. I was a little kid when the Beatles changed everything, endured some horrible music in the early 70s, then things got interesting again when "punk" started to appear mainstream. There is a great drought in popular music that has lasted (with many exceptions) over the last 30 years. You have to go off the beaten path to hear innovative music today, it's out there though. God bless all who were lucky to be of a certain age in the late 70's and 1980's - we didn't know how good we had it.

It was a really great intimate show. 2/3 of the way through he stops the show and says some of my fans haven't been here the whole time, so I'm gonna play some of my hits over so they can hear them too. One of the best songs they did, as well as ine of the best songs of 1982. Dave Wakeling has talked in interviews about the time Pete Townshend called him out of the blue saying he and David Gilmour were trying to work out the riff but couldn't. Dave told Pete he used a different tuning, similar to what the Velvet Underground used on many of their songs, that allowed him to come up with the droning effect. Years later he was still impressed that two guitar giants liked his song well enough to ask him how it went.

That hair style was just coming back with the girls at school, then. The whole LP "Just Can't Stop" is amazing, and check out the band in the movie "Dance Craze," incredibly tight and original. This is such a great album, and of course this is Dave Wakeling's most famous song, perhaps other than his General Public track "Tenderness". I've heard Dave talk about getting a call from none other than Pete Townsend who called him up to inquire what tuning he used. Dave is a big bar chord guy if you've ever seen him live. The last time I saw him play, some years ago now, I was amazed at how many young people seem to have re-discovered the new wave ska bands, and the English Beat in particular. Fun fact, they really were called "The Beat" but due to the existence of an american band of the same name (fronted by Paul Collins who was formerly in the influential 70's alt rock band "The Nerves"), Americans were marketed "The English Beat" to help avoid confusion between the two groups.

One of the (many, many) lovely things about this video is that it always yields something new. For example, it was easy to see on the first viewing that one of the intellectuals is reading Marx's "Capital" and that the chess player is reading Orwell's "1984". (Sadly the band broke up in 1983.) But I just noticed that the guy with the ear plugs is reading "Aimez-vous Brahms" by Francoise Sagan. In any case, it's all done so playfully and with so much fun and.... and perhaps this is due to the passage of time... there is also a real poignancy to this and an awareness of the passing of time. My favorite moment is when the intellectuals put down their books and join in the dancing.

The beat, the lyrics, and the fashion are absolutely hip, *hip of the highest order.*

A serious contender for the best song of the 80's, imo.

Although i was a teen in the early 80's, this wasn't my kinda music back then. But boy, looking back at some of the tunes of that time, it hits hard just how good some of those bands were.
This is an amazing song, it's nothing short of brilliant!

Saw the Beat at Bogart's in Cincinnati during their 1980 US tour. Very intimate setting. One of the greatest experiences of my life.

Saw them in a very small venue in Northern California in the 80's. I love these guys!
