Hugely underrated band. I remember dancing to this at a school disco in Stoke. Great days.
Ritzy’s, maxims, Shelley’s, Hudson’s,
@@christophermajor2841 Not Forgetting the PLACE...
Me too. I loved this song then and still do. I played it over and over again. Brilliant memories
@@christophermajor2841 i Was in Belize when this came out..#
Going to see them tomorrow night
This song makes me time travel 🙏
I have just travelled back to 1983 when I was 15, it was so fun. 😀
Only Dave Wakeling can pull of an Andy Williams classic pure genius
Seeing them in March 2024 can’t wait!!!!
Brilliant song
How was the concert?
That Saxophone, the guitars, sublime, simply the best cover of this classic song ever.
cover or copy - there is a difference
62 years old and reminiscing. 1980 was the year I met the love of my life. We both rocked to “THE BEAT”!
Amen to you both ❤❤
One of my favourite beat songs
I'm from Birmingham, I knew Roger, his good friend lived round the corner from me in Nechells, nice guy, rip mate, sad loss 😢 proud of our musical heritage ❤
Superb 80s Song x The best years ever ❤
I literally found out 15 minutes ago, after 30 years of thinking this was a Beat original, that Andy Williams did it first. It makes sense though. Either version is beautiful.
I have only heard the Andy Williams one. I had no idea it was remade, but this is a really good version, too.
The two white guitarists who look like brothers went on to later form FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS and did the same dance style in that band. I remember watching this exact episode of top of the pops and absolutely loving this song when I was 13 how time flies, now I'm 43 year old ska man.15/3/2014.Irish time 11:14am.Saturday.
Booleigh ska fest ftw bhoy...
loving it too totally a ska man too respect
They were also in Two Men A Drum Machine And A Trumpet and did exactly the same dance style!
I seen them in 83 when they were support band for bowies serious moon light tour, i would have gone home happy if i'd only saw them....brilliant band i was 20 at the time.....56 now
....saw FYC in NYC....Beacon Theater, soon after RAW AND THE COOKED was released...with rap group De La Soul and England's MINT JULEPS//all girl vocal group opening. One of the most energetic shows...with Roland Gift in full command of the microphone. English Beat...with Dave, still touring.
Saw them in April 2024 loved it!!!!
Rip : Saxa (born Lionel Augustus Martin) (5 January 1930 - 3 May 2017) . Founding member and the Sax player for the beat ..
Brings back so many memories from my youth happier times x
Met him xx
At 52, I know where ya comin from. 👍🤣
Can't argue with that
Great times other than trying to escape a bashing from the Skins/Rude Boys , we always got lucky!
RIP RANKIN ROGER SAD DAYS XX2019 !!,
wow...hadn't heard. REST IN PEACE.
I love this version of Andy William's song and of course Saxa's exquisite saxophone
Was it Andy Williams? Thanks Loved that song when I was a tot, but no idea who sang it. Great number!
Such a brilliant take of a classic, nobody could have done it like them
One of the most underrated bands ever! Great band and find memories
Was it underrated? 🤔
How were they underrated? What was their rating? Every music video on yt has an ‘underrated’ comment. It’s become meaningless.
I've had a crush on Dave Wakeling for years, saw them in Bristol in 2014, he gave me a hug, I almost freaked out. Seeing them again in July, I will be down the front hoping for another hug.
Same here till he went gay. :(
so did you get another hug?
The love of my life and I are still rocking in 2022. 42 years later.
Love this version
While I knew Andy Williams first sang this, I LOVE The English Beats version!! And the bass guitar player here was also in Fine Young Cannibals. Another band I love!
Another remake of the Andy Williams number. I remember hearing this as a teenager without knowing who they were. The rhythm, the upbeat and the whistling at the end still stand with me.
Nice moments
RIP Ranking Roger the white guy here sounds very soulish it's David Wakeling I believe.
Long live Papa Saxa...gone but never forgotten.
saw these and met them at warwick uni coventry made my day all top blokes good old saxa :O) best years of my life
The audience in the background,..”woe oh, woe oh”. So 80s Britain. 😂
I really miss the good old days.
Let's go back to the old days right now
Yeah Rachel, the ska rhythm takes me back to being ten years old and finding my musical identity, speakers out the windows on a hot day up here in port Glasgow, keep on moving those feet rude girl.
Was it different in Britain those days?
What a great cover version.amazingly evocative of the time.
Rank In Peace Roger 😪
Rank? Not to appropriate.
Love this version originally recorded by Andy Williams.
these guys were the ultimate in joyful music i saw them sing this fine classic at sheffield early 80s , ive adored them ever since lol xx
❤❤😢🥺😌😩🫣😔😌🩵💙✨WOW !!! How a song 🎶 can remind you of sooooo much !!!! TO MY DAD THANKS FOR SHOWING ME A WORLDWIDE VERITY OF MUSIC !!! BEAUTIFUL LYRICS THAT EXPRESS SO MUCH 😊❤ .. 10 YEARS WITHOUT YOU HAS BEEN SO LONG BUT I KNOW YOUR SPIRIT IS WITH US EVERY DAY . I love you dad 🪶
This really takes me back to back in the day.The Beat.
Always loved this version, the jangly guitars give it a certain freshness
Always think they are missing link between Roxy Music and Prince Buster
60s 70s and 80s music really good years so many great bands and artists.
I would say the late 70s -early 80s was as good as…if not better than the 60s
Loved this one rip roger.xx
Awesome Awesome Memorys
Really like this song loved the great Andy Williams version too.
The Andy Williams ORIGINAL
I like how Ranking Roger adds a rap verse to the song in the performance.
brilliant cover of the Andy Williams song!
Yes well done. Just not as moody as Andy's classic.
Though the oldies in my family complained they thought this version too speeded up!
Tottaly fantastic love it ❤❤
This song incapsulates the 1980's. A care free decade full of colour 🟥🟨🟩, Great Movies 🎬 📽, Music 🎶 🎵🎤🎧🎙🎸, Fashion 📸🛍, TV 📺 📼
"PLEASE TAKE ME BACK"
Care free? I don't think so.
With Reagan and the GOP mapping their plan to destroy America, AIDS going into high death rate. Huge up ticks in military spending.
The 1980s was the first step that lead us to the disastrous Trump from which we are still recovering.
Best decade for under 18s. Total disaster for adults
totally my band school 1980's - free thoughts, free vibes
Uncle roger at ur burial of ur thuneral I cried my eyes out then I had to remember what pato bantan said there is some better place than earth and we will meet u again no matter how long it takes
Rip uncle roger
Daisha White his name is actually Pato Banton*---- thuneral ???
Daisha White The word is funeral* not thuneral.
I could just listen to that bass riff on loop for days...
Great memories, great musicians. Great voice a Dave. All style.
😥 so shocked RIP Roger...
This music was the forking TOPS in the early eighties when Michael Jackson and Madonna were ruling (and at that age it felt like Ruining) the radio waves...we at least could find some cool ska-pop to soothe our souls...The Specials...Madness...UB40...even Modern English....they all gave us hope that we could listen to something other than trip back in time and listen to our older brother's record collection of early Stones and Bowie...then it was on to Bob and jimmy Cliff to Really take us to trench town....THOSE were some positive vibrations/musical memories!
yeah, Brit New Wave and ska saved us from the awful disco/funk era! downunder we had the golden era of aussie pub rock, too, great times.
Attended college from 83 - 88 "College radio" really saved me from that obnoxious pop music. Thanks to ska bands for leading the way.
Takes me back - I was 18 then. A world away. Wonderful times - Thatcher notwithstanding. May our Lord judge her. Beautiful music coming out of Brum, Cov and London, wonderful times.
Totally agree with you, especially the Thatcher bit. Great times and great music
The Beat
The Best ❤
This is just one of three great Beat covers from "I Just Can't Stop It". Also ❤ Tears of a Clown and Rough Rider.
Superb band. Dave is brilliant.
He got that vibration on his voice and it's so unique
I loved this band!!
Amazing cover done to perfection
still like there music today
Love this cover video ❤
RIP SAXA🎷🎷🎷
I always thought that was Andy Williams singing this. Of course, that's a compliment to the great singing of the English Beat.
Loving that sax man
The Beat, when they covered songs, did a great job of updating the original so that it didn't sound like an inferior remake. They did it beautifully with Tears Of A Clown and again here. Dave Wakeling is having fun hamming it up with the miming and wearing a pullover cardigan sweater in reference to Andy Williams (I always wondered if Andy ever heard this version and what he thought of it).
He did, and he loved it.
Agree they made great covers but also some brilliant songs of their own - Mirror in the Bathroom and Stand Down Margaret are two of my faves from the era, and Drowning is one of the strangest top 40 records ever.
,what a cool band.
They were superb live. Nice to see dave is still going now...
RIP SAXA ❤️
I listen with my mom to this every week or so. It makes her happy. Memories
No one wore a trilby hate the way you did mate,RIP, Respect mate, Chaz,Julie xx

He was so beautiful!
In my life...... Legendary ❤️
Big Tune
What a band
I remember when Sting always wore his The Beat t-shirt on stage
He Also had on for the music video. I don't stand so close to me
@@christymoreland He actually admits hes quite keen on wearing the same thing constantly, look at the green flight suit in tbd earlier days plus the Syncronicity tour silly jumper he always wore.. on stage and around town !😄
Love this just sent to my boyfriend
wow only heard this song by Andy Williams. and I loved that version but this is really good also, not sure why I never heard this version here in NZ
God damn these guys were good.
Best ska band ever
