If lifting an island made completely out of your weakness and to actually throw it into outer space doesn't make you tough or strong then idk what does.

Instead of deliberately throwing bad guys into buildings causing collateral damage to Metropolis. This Superman was actually trying to save it and its inhabitants. Very scenic moment of waterfalls flowing down mountainous island of crystals. The use of sound effects, music and imagery just simply breathtaking!!!
He also gathered enough sunlight to have the strength to lift that whole island of kryptonite. Which is pretty amazing to me. Never seen anything like it!
In Kingdom Come, Luthor acknowledged that Kryptonite would no longer work on Superman due to the fact that since he retired, his cells consumed enough energy from the sun that he is at the height of his invulnerability.

Yes, it does seem sort of incongruous, but try to think of it this way. The plane, although much lighter than the island, was falling at a very fast rate, which translates to greater force (sort of like trying to stop a speeding train instantly). The island, however, was not plummeting from the sky, and was picked up from a non-moving position. The only comparable situation I can think of is a pickup truck towing thousands of pounds but not being able to withstand a high-speed crash.
The funny thing is, due to Superman's ability via the comics, he doesn't have to. He has this thin layer of force field surrounding his body that holds things in place. This is how he was able to fly a pyramid to Mars without it crumbling in the comics. Directors seem to overlook this ability, though.
This is Silver Age Superman. At the end of Superman 1 and 2, he turns back time by travelling at light speed and holds up the earth's core to prevent California from sliding into the Ocean. Lifting an Island made out of kryptonite and him tanking it is well within the possibilities of SA Superman.
lairdriver This Superman seems to be more modern age, as he gathers energy from the sun. So he has solar energy absorption. Silver age didn't have that. Singer said Superman returns is based only loosely on the first 2 Superman movies. Uses it as a vague history. This was a small growing continent.

At first I thought the same thing. What is happening he is lifting the island with a ton of dirt or lead and mineral deposits at its root. As he is picking up the island what is falling slowly is that dirt shielding.
+J Campezzi That makes sense but a stick of kryptonite comes out right into his face and he's still pushing through that? He was shown earlier to lose enough of his powers around the island that 2 regular dudes could kick his ass.
kevin lorthe what the others are saying is true...but that close he should be knocked out...he should just use his super breath underneath the island and propel the island upward
I'd like to add that he had to gently halt the plane to stop everyone from getting their necks snapped by the sudden change in momentum. With an island, not so much.
How was that over-the-top? Superman has been known to have accomplished immeasurable feats from his will to save people. That's the attribute that stands out from all the other super heroes.
@Parrotguy1999 not to mention after he lets the mountain go before he falls back into Earth's atmosphere, he's in a crucified position, feet together and arms stretched out, it is a clear analogy.
1:14 - 1_ 22 EPICNESS at its best...the chorus voice just does it...this is one of my fave scenes of the movie. This movie wasn't bad like everybody says and IMHO is just EPIC.
I imagine that made Superman exhausted from lifting that huge island filled with kryptonite as it weakens him. But that didn’t stop him from doing what he must, and risked his life to save the world.
@TheNipplesofGod ITs a passive ability of a super powered Kryptonian its called 'Tactile telekinesis' basically his body creates a small aura over the entire object he's lifting so that huge things dont just fold under him.
Because a plane is a very delicate machine for someone with his strength... especially with a hundred people inside that he could easily hurt or kill. If he just went in front of the plane and stopped it in it's tracks, it would be like the plane running into the ground at full speed and being blown to bits. A giant hunk of crystal and rock, on the other hand, he doesn't need to be delicate with.
@SergeantSatire: No the suit is close to his skin that it makes it indestructible as well. In the movie itself we see just how easy they rip it apart at the hospital after he fell comatose back to Earth.
Here's something of note. The shards of rock contain minerals founds in the crystals, and what of the possibility that another continent could be formed.
This scene for me proved why he deserved to be the kingdom come superman❤️

Now that's Super Strength, Superman was also being exposed to Kryptonite which was weakening him and he carried that thing out of orbit.
Green Light Comics As DP would say, "Maximum effort!"
Green Light Comics And he wasn't even full strength here as he still had a Kryptonite shard in him. That's impressive.
Guy Haskins well he was still strong enough to fight it and he still carried that crap.

Try to do better than that Zack Snyder
I would say he already did but dats me but I'm sure he can do alot better
man Superman is awesome!!! He throws a small island with kryptonite it into orbit!!! AWESOME
I searched for asteroid and this shit came
I'd like to add that he had to gently halt the plane to stop everyone from getting their necks snapped by the sudden change in momentum. With an island, not so much.
How was that over-the-top? Superman has been known to have accomplished immeasurable feats from his will to save people. That's the attribute that stands out from all the other super heroes.
Many people can say "it's over the top, etc.", but for me at least, that scene alone, proves why Superman is...SUPERMAN. :)
a legend doing his stuff.
LoL the sweet drips off him either though he is in space ;)
He got stabbed by kryptonite before absorbing an extra dose of sunlight, then he lifted the island after absorbing an extra dose of sunlight.
