it's sad that when lagwagon started their career, bands like blink 182 got recognized instead of these guys. it just seems unfair, these guys have worked so hard and deserve the recognition of being pioneers of the 90s pop punk scene, next to nofx and NUFAN
When Lagwagon started their career (1992) blink has just formed that same year and were rehearsing out of Tom's garage and in Scott's (original drummer, 1992-1998) bedroom
Lagwagon is melodic hardcore punk, at least most of the time, they have pop punk songs but they're rather rare in their last 2 albums and EP which are way more melodic hardcore punk (aka "skate punk" and NUFAN's best stuff is their first 3 albums and the Daily Grind EP, when the lineup changed too much, they got emo even, ugh, NUFAN was over after Leche Con Carne, best release is the Daily Grind EP and their first 2 albums are hardcore punk and are pretty great, it's not a snorefest like anything from More Betterness and everything thereafter.
Love love love Lagwagon. The combination of Joey's lyrical tallents and melodic tendencies, combined with the heavy metal tendencies of some other band members, comes together for unforgettable punk for the ages. I remember going to a show once, and taking to Chris Flippin after, and how he told me he thought Lagwagon was on the edge of break up, with joey going in a more poetic/lighter-type of music between Bad Astronaut, and the beginning of his doing some more solo and acoustic stuff, and how, he, Chris, was more into heavy metal (and always had been). It at the same time made me realize the components that i loved so much about Lagwagon, but also made me see it for it's individual contributions. Without the combination, it wouldn't have been what it was and is.
