  • The so-called black-sheep of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Oh, how it pains me to see you so reviled by the internet. But am I just remembering you wrong? Well, to find out, why not play through you twice, or...three times, I guess.
Apologies for any errors in the video; I upgraded to Adobe Premier and this was my big editing test before the monster that will me Kingdom Hearts II.
But most importantly, thanks for watching!

I love this game and the story. I feel like this is Sora at his best. All the other games he’s a cliche boring pure heart hero. In this game he actually goes through different emotions and expresses himself. And the gameplay was great. Rather than just spamming the attack button like in the other games, you have to be strategic with how you build your deck

CoM is def my fave KH game story-wise. The story is deep, nuanced and feels rewarding after you had to deal with a non-standard gameplay to get to see all of it.
Larxene is one of my favorite KH characters as well, and she shines the most here. Any other appearance of her in any other game is measly an empty husk (see what I did there?) of how awesome she is here.

I just find interesting how each world story they actually foreshadow what the organization plan to do by manipulating sora memory. They don't look relevant the first time but after you know the plot it's really surprising. This is my first game in the series and still one of my favorites game. When you understand the card system it's so fun creating deck with powerful magic to destroyed heartless. Great story, ost ect I love it so much it

I didn’t like rechain when I was younger but it winded up turning into one of my favorites.
I was one of the people who skipped it initially and it made me more curious about the characters I didn’t meet and why Marluxia and namine were in the intro sequence.
I enjoyed the different interpretation of events in the Disney worlds even though it is lazy to a degree. But since KH got worse after 2 this winded up being more enjoyable. Lol
Axel vs Marluxia is one of the best KH cutscenes in the whole franchise and it’s disappointing that KH never seized the opportunity to do more fight scenes with its unique characters.. very rarely would they do it and it never topped that one for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The story unfortunately hasn't aged well. By extending Marluxias and Larxenes backstory they go against what CoM was trying to say. Turns out memories and promises do get forgotten and turn you into a evil monster. The idea of it being a "Rebellion" despite the fact it's still technically Sora's enemy too makes it even more dumb. Marluxia probably could've explained that Xemnas forces them to work for them but then they somehow expect Namine being Soras girlfriend helps them because that'll somehow help them? When it first came out I thought it was really good but after all the dust is settled it's possibly the most confusing story of the entire series. It's amazing how each game retcons huge aspects of the entire world building. No wonder KH3 feels so off. In retrospect the idea of Sora being asleep for a Year should allow more to be added but instead we only get 358/2 with very minimal changes to the story. Wasted potential almost every turn of the series.

I think you have it backwards. CoM was the first KH game I ever played. What made the first two Kingdom Hearts games so great was how simple the stories were and how much you could relate to the characters.
Even without having played the first game and not knowing who any of the characters were, I found the concept of Sora and friends gradually having their memories twisted super interesting and unique. CoM makes perfect sense. It's everything else coming after it that completely ruins everything.
It's pretty obvious that whoever was in charge of KH's story had absolutely no foresight whatsoever, didn't plan anything and just made shit up as he went. It's a shame to let the newer games spoil your experience of playing the older ones who still had coherent plots and relatable characters.
KHII is when shit starts hitting the fan, the whole concept of nobodies makes absolutely zero sense and neither does anything the organization is trying to achieve. CoM is still enjoyable because the main focus is still on Sora and Naminé and we don't even know their motivations at that point in time.

I do think the PS2 version's dialogue was worse. The Riku Replica scene is one of the biggest examples. The only scene that the remake did better was Axel killing Vexen.

I watched all of you KH videos, and I applaud the effort you made into putting your thoughts and feelings about the franchise into video format, in a coherent form. Obviously, there are things I agree with and things I disagree with. Every critique and analysis is subjective, there is no such thing as objectiveness, but overall I enjoyed watching your videos and I definitely think they deserve many, many more views.
As a parting comment, I dislike how you consistently put down and underestimate the capabilities of old handheld devices. When something about the portable KH games was subpar, your go-to critique was that "it is understandable since it is on a handheld", but you could make an extremely deep and fun combat system on the original GB, let alone on the DS. You can tell rich and well directed stories on the original GB, let alone on the 3DS and PSP.
If certain aspects of Chain of Memories, Days and Birth By Sleep were subpar, it wasn't because of the portable systems, but due to the lack of time/effort/skill/direction/whatever from the developers.

Hey, thank you so much for watching all of them, I know it was a time commitment.
On your feedback, yeah I noticed that, too. Ultimately, I do feel like that concession is fair to an extent, but I think we can at least both agree that it can only really work insofar as comparing two different entries, say comparing CoM to KH1, and not as an excuse for poor design decisions, as I did at some points. The DDD script is done and recorded and edited, so there's no going back there, but if I cover handhelds in the future, I'll be sure to keep this in mind.
Merry Christmas, and thank you for the feedback!

It makes me really happy to see other people actually enjoy Chain of Memories. I will agree with the majority that I find the grinding in that game to be way too egregious and the pay off is usually not worth it not to mention that you're practically exploring what is essentially the exact rooms over and over again with different textures or sprites. But the combat was very enjoyable it felt rewarding learning different strategies with your deck and the sheer versatility the game allows for with the way you can structure your deck just offered for more idea building and possibilities you can engage bosses.

I feel like you overlooked Namine's involvement in Riku's story, and how it gave him the last push he needed to choose his path, as well as over-emphasized certain aspects and underplayed others, while Riku now has faith in himself and his path, he's still burdened by guilt over how he behaved towards those he considers his best friends, and combined with appearing as Sora's mortal enemy, decides its for the best to keep his distance until it proves necessary, and you pretty much just took his journey of redemptive memory as a footnote, rather than the soul churning course it was, Riku is a keen bugger and the moment he gets slapped with "The place is empty because you rejected everyone" and then Maleficent shows up, he knows exactly where his memories are taking him, through his dark painful past regrets, facing the shadows of his worst decisions
Also Riku is super fun, and he has a nifty backflip, some useful advice is that he, even moreso than Sora, really needs to gas his opponents, just grind them out and let them run themself out, also Re:Chain gave Riku a couple non-Dark Mode Sleights aside from MM Miracle
Final Ansem sucks in both versions tho, Guardian seems like less of an issue in Re, but he's still why Dark Aura gets fucky, and having preset decks and stat ups makes it a really smooth journey, that lets its smaller story shine and lets you really leverage the strength Riku brings, maxed out AP does bonkers damage Sora wishes he could approach, also he has INSTANT Reloads which makes the mashy combat strategy much more tenable
Duels in Re:Chain however suck, Riku does them, Sora gets one as part of Final Marluxia's Sleights, and they're just kinda unfun
In a random footnote, its possible for trash heartless to have 0s, if you use a Room Card that reduces their card numbers

KH: CoM gives me mixed feelings, I remember geting to Marluxia and being unable to beat him at the End, I quit playing for ages and then returning to start the Game again (before KH2 was released) after finally understanding how to play the Game properly such as making Decks and increasing HP. After beating it I was shocked to find out about Riku's Part and was thrilled to play it.
I actually enjoyed KH: RoM more, mainly because I really wanted to play CoM on the big screen. Sadly because I lived in the UK I had to order an American PS2 and KH: RoM in order to play it.

My workaround to have a deck good enough to finish the game without grinding is to increase CP as much as you can, with some HP increases, get the keyblade sleigh that deals a good enough damage or you are more confortable with and then just fill the entire deck to spam that sleight constantly then add some sleights at the end to be able to recover with spells and use items like 2 kingdom keys + heal or 2 kingdom keys + items.

    1. in a room, if you look over the border theres nothing. In NBC it works cause its all red but otherwise it takes me out of the game idk.
    2. Weak strong cards and strong weak cards like you said. But mainly because mp points are too few, and since thats normal, even when selling weak 1,2,3, and 4 cards, sleights use those, so even then does it help? lethal frame fixes this i destroyed everything but is that good too or is it like...avoiding gameplay using it? idk lol

I prefer riku mode. Weaker story, but no mp grinding, no under- or over-powering your deck. the fixed deck per floor fixes my main complaints about the game. You have to learn to work with what you have, which imo is more engaging.

I feel kind of insulted you degrade Re:CoM as a cash grab. I mean, yeah it kind of is, but it also is the only reason we got Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix. Nomura literally got that project approved solely through pitching Re:CoM as being packaged along with it. I think it warrants more respect for that, as well as making CoM's story accessible to more players.

But I agree the remake's balance isn't the best, to the point I have to restrict myself to enjoy the game. Also I find the 80HP challenge dumb since it relies on AI luck most of the time.
Also the final Marluxia fight is easier than the previous fight if you know his attack pattern...

@@WhereIStandIsWhereIFall I didn't go trough 3 so I can't speak for it and I never finished Days so I can't speak for that one either, hell not even Birth by Sleep but I think 1 and 2 both had better stories. The only thing that makes this game seem like it's a better story is because the story itself seems a lot more focused and concentrated. Now admittedly I haven't played it in a really long time so the story certainly isn't fresh in my head but the mere fact that it doesn't really have any super memorable moments (although I agree that Riku replica part was pretty sad) that I think of when I think of Kingdom Hearts. The whole Roxas story was some of my favorite in part 2, that single tear drop when Sora says bye to the gang always gets me 😢.

@@WhereIStandIsWhereIFalltbh I'd say every game, except DDD. Re:Coded is less relevant but I think it had better emotional beats (localization choices aside).
I think it ultimately came down to me not caring about any of the characters, personally. Namine is my least favorite character and the most confusing concept in the franchise. And repliku just didn't do much for me. Felt like proto-Roxas but with an admittedly more bittersweet ending.
Even the organization we see here felt half baked, outside of Larxene. The little bits of time in Days before they go to castle Oblivion did more for their characters than all of COM. I want to like COM Marluxia, but I think in this case it worked against him to keep out of Sora's line of sight until the last floor of the game (and ofc he just doesn't exist in Riku's path... Heck, I don't think Riku ever actually meets Marluxia in the series). It's smart from a real POV but not from a storytelling one.
Maybe that's just the difference with me. Maybe COM has better storytelling than most of the other games, but I can generally forgive bad sorry telling if it can sell some emotional beats. And most of KH for me has high emotional beats (often cheap, but I guess I live for that cheese as a KH fan lol). COM doesn't for me because I simply don't care for the characters, outside of the core SDG. at least not in this entry (Axel in days absolutely pops off).

(Re)CoM is definitely the most unfairly judged game in the entire KH history, KH3 included. Most complaints are just about the game being a card game, which is not exactly a valid point. "This game requires 5% of my brain instead of 0%, what a ridiculous game".
There definitely are more valid complaints than that, like the game being too grindy and repetitive, or how most elemental sleights are Fire-based, and there are only 4 non-Blizzaga Blizzard sleights (1 of them is basically Blizzard) and 1 non-Thundaga Thunder sleight.
(Re)CoM is one of the best KH games in the series. It has a digestible, deep, and intriguing story. It is the only KH game that shows Sora's genuine anger. It shows the story of betrayal with interesting plot twists. The villains are well portrayed, as well, especially Axel and Larxene.
I like (Re)CoM's gameplay the same way I like DMC's gameplay. You do not defeat the enemies. You destroy them with style.

How about the fact it's entirely superfluous to understanding the full story of KH? And yeah, card based combat games not explicitly built around an actual TCG irl are trash, if I want card based combat I'll play a Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, or whatever else have you game. It's not about the amount of brainpower being used, I bet anything I could kick your butt 10/10 in chess, magic, or Yu-Gi-Oh, it's mainly about ease of entry with Kingdom Hearts, no other series is the definitive: "We hate poor people." "It's not about the brainpower being used"

I am not a fan of this argument, but since you asked for it, here we go. I wonder what your IQ is. Mine is 142. I play Yu-Gi-Oh and am currently playing Master Duel. I used to play Hearthstone competitively. You aren't beating me in a card game anytime soon.
