If I were you, I’d track the sales differences between those you charge and don’t charge. Based on the difference you can see what wasted time is made up for with sales you make because you don’t have the friction. TLDR: idk, use math to figure it out
As a small business owner for a couple decades, best practice is to charge for the CAD, it clears out clients that aren't serious and consumers value the fact that you value your work- it is extremely reasonably price especially since it is applied to the full purchase price. Charge it, respect your own talent.
I just paid 150 for diamond procurement and a 3-D cad. Happy to do it. I don’t expect jewelers to work for free. Asking for a deposit weeds out people who truly aren’t serious about purchasing from you.
$50 is pretty kind considering what your skills are worth. But you figure the time it takes to make the 3D CAD on the off chance they might not want to work with you or worst case scenario they try and take a picture of your work and try to find someone else who they can lowball into making it instead :/. Nah my guy you earned that $50, keep at it. Also thats pretty cool that you take the time to make those CADs I've never seen a jeweler do that. 3D modeling is a pain in the ass so that is pretty impressive
Absolutely take the $50. Anything past the CAD work up, take 50% deposit or full payment. Anyone who doesn’t want to go through the hassle of paying $50 did not plan on being a customer in the first place lol
You are a valued asset with a unique skill set as an individual, so it seems only logical that your time should be equally valued and compensated. If they want to see what you can do, then they can look at past works done for free because that is time that has already been compensated for and costs you no new devotion of time, but if they want to know what you can do for them, then they should compensate you for your time and skills. If they do decide to go somewhere else but want your design, then they should have to pay you for that work. Applying that charge to their final total should they decide to go with you is, in my opinion, a value in and of itself. So bottom line, nobody gets rich giving their money away, and your time and skill stets are not cash but hold a monetary value, so why would you give that away. Hope this helps you, it’s just one person’s opinion in a world filled with billions of them. Good luck and I hope you are able to one day reach your dreams. Everyone who works hard and has dreams and aspirations to do great things should have the opportunity to one day reach them and live a fulfilling, productive, and happy life. Peace and happiness to you and yours.
Absolutely go with the 50 bucks method. Your time is valuable. It shows you who will actually be serious, so you don't have more of your time wasted. As well deducting it from the total is fair. Never undervalue your time. All creative jobs deal with people trying to underpay them or the person undervalues their own time. As far as the resistance, if they can't see paying 50 dollars for a OOAK design, they are going to be a lot more resistant to the price tag of the actual ring. It will save you time and help vet clients who are more serious and will appreciate your work more.
I'd say yes for the customer paying for the CAD. As someone going to school to learn CAD and CAM for industrial and manufacturing purposes, knowing how to 3D model takes time and effort to do, and should be paid for.
Perfect solution. If they aren’t prepared to pay that much for your skills, they’re delusional. But maybe tell them that it would be deducted from the final price and that it’s just so if they decide not to work with you you didn’t waste hours.
Solution: give them 35/40$ back if they don't like it. If they ghost you, the 50$ is all yours. If they have a reason that they don't, you still get paid for your time and they get back their "security deposit"
10000 percent deposit .. I'm also a jewller . It's about you being fair for both parties. That 50 atleast pays for the time and also shows that they are atleast alot more reliable compared to someone who doesnt
You can certainly save your work for future use and just build your design catalog. This way, it's never wasted time no matter if you charge or not and it will save time in the future.
$50 doesn’t really cover all the experience and expertise your provide the client to make a visual representation of their idea. It’s even deducted to their overall costs too. I don’t see why paying that much is a big deal.
With your skill set, tools, and fantastic rep as an expert maker AND business person, yeah. $50 consulting fee is more than fair. But you may wanna scale it for more challenging projects/metals/whatever metric you choose. Surely some consults require far more skills, time, and effort? Idk. I just want for you not to have to work for free--esp since 3D print materials just aren't cheap. If they resist payment, fine. They clearly don't value your worth and you can concentrate your attention on those who value that skill set.
Never work for free. That’s why it’s called work and not fun or a hobby. Besides is only $50, that’s actually a great price and it goes towards the final cost.
It’s a business so it’s all about profit, really. You said it’s harder for them to actually agree to spending that first $50, but if they do is it worth it by making them more likely to buy the actual product in the end? Or can you balance out the price to say 25$ that makes customers even more likely to pay for the cad and even buy the finished ring? And on the other hand, do you get more customers when you do the 3d cad for free? If you aren’t sure, I think you should keep experimenting until you can figure out the way that maximizes profits and customers. I hope you can find a good balance ❤️👍🏽
Work for free then if you’re actually legit great jeweler, they recommend you. Once you become top tier, you can just charge for more and make all that unpaid time back. If you charge $50 you waste time with payment and things and you’ll have picky clients
Are you sure you are charging enough for the initial work? Depending on your desired clientele & market, you may want to set a price higher to get bigger commissions, albeit likely less.
I would do a security deposit just for the fact that they are now invested into you so they are also probably less likely to pull out after you give them the design
People are more willing to take you seriously if you charge for your time. People that don’t want to pay $50 “deposit” essentially were never going to get you to make something anyway
Naw I don't care what anyone says your time as a jeweler is valuable it's the same as when you make a ring or pendent ECT and you don't have a client you don't make it cheaper bc you didn't have a buyer for it already. Your time is important and the cost of a 3d cad program can get expensive
Think the $50 option is fair. If you also mention to them about that deduction early on, that might reduce the resistance. It'll also save you time. Or maybe start working on your own designs as samples to put on your website.
I feel like anyone who’s serious about getting it won’t give you friction on the $50 charge, and those who do end up paying it will be more likely to get the ring with you than not since they already have a sunk cost.

I would say you have a right to have a security deposit. Good work 👍

Should be $150 shows that they are actually serious and if it comes off the quote at the end then any real customer won't worry about it.

I charge a non refundable $150-200 to see the CAD work. 😎 you should up your price!
Yes, I agree with the $50 version
Because for any business time spent is equivalent to money spent.
It’s a business so it’s all about profit, really. U r absolutely right at your place
Totally do a $50 clad. You deserve to get paid for spending the time to make it. Anyone who has an issue with that ain't worth your time.
let them have it as store credit if they dont buy
Work for free then if you’re actually legit great jeweler, they recommend you. Once you become top tier, you can just charge for more and make all that unpaid time back. If you charge $50 you waste time with payment and things and you’ll have picky clients
It's about money.
Do which one pays you more.
Also, return customers dont pay.

I would do a security deposit just for the fact that they are now invested into you so they are also probably less likely to pull out after you give them the design
Most picked number between 1 and 100. $37.
People are more willing to take you seriously if you charge for your time. People that don’t want to pay $50 “deposit” essentially were never going to get you to make something anyway
Great job
Hell working with 3d cads can be a pain have a slideing scale system on a 25 dollar scale depending on complexity
that LEGO ring is fire
Naw I don't care what anyone says your time as a jeweler is valuable it's the same as when you make a ring or pendent ECT and you don't have a client you don't make it cheaper bc you didn't have a buyer for it already. Your time is important and the cost of a 3d cad program can get expensive
Good idea! Time is money
TIME IS EMIT
TIMER REMIT

Honestly I say yes, sounds good on paper
I say charge them 100 next time
if they want a ring but won’t put a $50 deposit to get the design right they probably aren’t worth your time anyway
I feel like anyone who’s serious about getting it won’t give you friction on the $50 charge, and those who do end up paying it will be more likely to get the ring with you than not since they already have a sunk cost.
You should try and automate this process or out sorce the work
charge them 50 bucks bcuz it takes you precius time to make the 3d render.
Time is money
It should be 25$
Do the 50 dolla
