Derek, you're always ahead-of-the-curve. I'm doing my doctoral dissertation on nature-based interventions to treat stress related mental health disorders, and I appreciated this. But...just sending so much positive energy your way. I love your content. Even during the darkest times for vegan youtubers you've always remained consistent, and true to yourself.
That sounds like a super interesting dissertation!! If you don't mind sharing, do you have a favorite piece of research that you've read so far? I'd love to learn more about that!
Me and my fiancé decided to go Vegan a week ago because we noticed our bodies were not handling animal products well. I had no idea what to eat or how to prepare meals, and how to get all the nutrients I needed. Finding your channel has helped me out so much! Thank you for all the information and the positivity!
Stopped watching news. Really helps. If something you need to know if something happens you’ll find out. At the beginning and end of each day I write down or say 5 things I’m grateful for. You are always in my lists. For winter exercise shovel people’s driveways and sidewalks that have a hard time doing it themselves. Love and peacefulness to all.
This is great. Thanks for sharing. Practicing being grateful is really the key. I'm on your grateful list?! You are too kind. I hope we get lots of snow this winter, I always help shovel.
One of the most important habits that help me stay positive is sticking to a daily cleaning routine. I feel like our domain can be a reflection of what we feel inside and vise versa.
Yeeess!! I have things I tidy up and clean everyday. Then things I clean weekly and monthly. Having a clean space does wonders. Even if it takes a while to get into the routine.
Sitting in nature quietly long enough to blend in is such a great tip. The first time I did this with a group of people on a permaculture course in the middle of a woods in Glasgow. A deer walked about 10 metres away from me. It was such an amazing experience. Being a gardener, any chance I get to be myself I try to stop and spot birds and mammals etc. Even looking a the different types of fungi at this time of year is awesome. Thanks for the video.
Summary: 1. Consume (social media, TV etc), less and also increase content that make you feel good (& less of the bad) 2. Get out into nature 3. Move Your Body! 4, have and spent time on your hobbies & passions 5. Make good choices with your food, nutrients & supplements Very cool opening & great video - cut scenes and lighting on your main scenes. Thanks for creating this video!
Love this. Saw a quote from our fellow Canadian Jann Arden the other day ... the best time to go for a walk is when you don't feel like it. Really resonated with me.
Exactly. Oh Jann Arden, been a while since I heard that name. It reminds me of the saying, "Saying you are too inflexible to do yoga is like saying you are too dirty to have a bath" lol.
I can relate to strangers thinking you're nuts in the forest...I often go for walks on trails and always bring my tin whistle (a small flute) and I'll bust it out whenever the mood strikes and start playing. A huge bearded man, alone, playing a small flute in the woods...can you imagine the reactions when they stumble upon that bizarre scene? 😂😂 Great video Derek 👍
Great video, Derek. Also, in my opinion, having a pet, it's amazing. When I'm surrounded by animals, I'm my best version. By the way, please adopt, don't shop.👍
Love all your videos! I’m an active 67 year old retired RN and was having GI issues in 2019. The physicians I saw were useless. Saw a naturopath and she fixed the gut issues with supplements. Since then I became plant based do yoga daily and continue to hike bike and workout. Never felt better. Your videos are helpful to keep the attitude going ! Thanks 🙏
Derek, this may be the greatest video you've ever made and you've made many great ones. Really enjoyed the forest bathing and hobbies part btw. Thank you for all the well-done content that's been so useful to myself and others.
1000 Hours Outside Challenge - designed for kids mostly but I think Adults should give it a whirl!! This video is the reminder I needed in the midst of a mental health low. Thanks Derek ❤ Edited to add: Hobbies are important and NEVER be afraid to do something "childish". PLAY is not just for kids ❤
Loved this video. Started eating whole food plant based in March 2019. I love walks outside. Since March 17, 2020 I've been working from home. Isolation drove many indoors, but walked the neighborhood on my morning & afternoon breaks. July 2020 was introduced to Walk at Home video exercises. When the fires hit CA the smoke was horrendous here in the San Joaquin valley. I kept up with exercise after my shift and lost 14.5 lbs in that year. My husband took us to the beach every Saturday where we got fresh air and sun. Bringing a cooler with our food kept us whole food plant based. I began morning devotions and meditation before my shift since I didn't have to drive to work. This has been a positive experience. I'm working on my sleep routine as this is very important for health. Thank you for sharing your list in this video. Loved the forest scenery and music. Well done.
this video made me so happy and grateful. It reminded me that there are great people in this world looking to help those that are struggling. Thank you, Derek!
The hobby point was so bang on. It's not the cars. It's how the cars enable you to learn so much more and create. We are inherently creative animals. Every sentence we say has likely never been said ever. We are animals that go out into the world and create. That doesn't mean just art or "creatives" that we've been told is being creative. Play itself is creative.
I recently realized I have not been smiling as much as I use to. So I am purposely smiling pleasantly at all the joys of life. Thank you for such cheerful positive content.
I'm a yoga teacher and I try to emphasize all these positive feel good habits to my students as well. And may I add, volunteering is another important practice to consider that can help in so many ways to feel part of a community, find like minded friends, and create feelings of being part of something bigger than ourselves... Volunteering for an organization that's doing good in the world, an animal sanctuary, community effort, whatever might touch our hearts is a wonderful way to bring in real feelings of accomplishment and helping others to live well and happy too. Doing good, feels good.
Ah, Derek, I love this video! You are a beacon of light, and you bring so much positivity, joy and happiness to others through your work. You radiate these qualities, and thank you for sharing your tips! I definitely need to implement these better in my life. Keep doing what you're doing, you rock!
Love the nature in these kinds of videos! Awesome job with the fall colored hat and the contrasted jacket, looks good on the green backdrop! - and thanks for the tips 😉
I loved this video! I heard about forest bathing years ago and its still my ALL TIME favorite concept. I sometimes joke that the forest is my natural habitat. Its the place where i fell my best. I also love the advice about the type of media we consume affecting our mood. It can be such a subtle influence that we dont always realize its happening. It's awesome that you mentioned it.
Great habits Derek! I agree with it all!! I am currently in the process of a regrouping after this season of Covid, politics, social unrest. I am calling it GMST - Getting My Stuff Together.
4 minutes into the video and already I am feeling positive. Thank you for sharing this. So true that what we fill our mind (and I will add, spirit) is the most important thing that you can do to help you and others be joyful.
I've been binging your videos lately. Your positivity is inspiring. And it's sooooo nice to find someone who eats basically the same as I do. (whole foods plant based no (or almost no) added oil) All your ingredients are so accessible, I can make most of your recipes with little shopping or substituting. I'm really excited to try out some of the sauces. Anyway, many thanks for sharing your recipes, tips and positive energy! All the best!
Thanks for sharing your + vibes and beautiful forest Derek! Nature is the best. As a long term raw vegan I can attest to the benefits of plant based diets too. Love your work. Very cute kitten!
Love it! So many people struggle with mental health and the fact that you can take care of it (just like your physical health) isn't discussed enough. It's great that you can share these habits that work for you and explain that you have to make an effort with them and it's worth it. You're such an inspiration! 👏
I went to Humboldt and spent some time in the redwoods a few weeks ago. I was trying to breathe in as much of that air and trying to memorize the feeling. I totally connected with what you were saying about taking it in. It was a great positive feeling
Growing up near forest, i always absorbed the elements as a small kid, i love the Nature, and by yourself with your dog, also have had opportunity to camp in this environment year round, like 26 below zero and wind chill at 7 degrees or the heat of summer, UGH so hot, bottom line so enjoyable and how you really adapt to it. glad i have experienced this for myself, Love your videos Derrick, God Bless, you are a pure soul, thank you for always being you, take care
I watched this a second time. Kinda feeling discouraged lately. I appreciate the opening and you be honest your not always positive, or happy. There are people on social media that cannot stand or admit they’re not always happy. They don’t admit they have bad days, get upset. I really respect you more Derek for that Derek. I always hope for yours and Krystal’s happiness you’ve blessed me so much since 2018-2019 when I first started my journey. This, is good advice. Thank you 🙏
This is so relateable, watching it in the darkest depth of Norwegian winter🌑☃️💨🥶skiing(cross country) during the 2 hours of sun builds up for days of positivity!🌤 Also watching hiking videos or shots from summer helps a bit to get through the season🤗
Such a great Video my brother from another mother! I couldn't agree more with you on all these topics. I love your little RC truck it looked amazing, I bet ny son would love if we played outside and use this as a hobby. Thanks for keeping it real and being an amazing influence on us! Stay happy, and healthy.
WOW! What a spectacular waterfall at the end! Look forward to all your videos. This one was so inspiring. I do most of the habits.😁 Always room for improvement. I also LOVE animals and nature. Your recipes are amazing. Thank you so much!
All these are amazing habits! Exercise is a big one, when it comes to a situation where you're already in a bad mood. Moving your body, (this includes dancing for example!) is so cleansing to the mind. It can be a form of moving meditation. From personal experience it works wonders. Our minds need as much hygiene and care taking as our bodies, just in different ways and self care is vital for feeling good long term!
Derek, this was hands down the most value packed video I have consumed on RUclips in many, many months. Thank you so much for these simple reminders. I strive to do all these things, but have been coming up short on a couple of them lately, and this was just what I needed. Tip #1 about content consumption hit me the hardest. Right you are, my good man! Right you are!
You are so wise for your age. You are spot on with those 5 things. I struggle with them but absolutely believe it would change my life if I would just do it!! I would enjoy more of those kinds of videos. Thank-you!
Wow, this was great! It really made me think about what I do every day that has the opposite effect. I will make more of an effort to incorporate your suggestions. You are like a bright light and I love watching your videos! Thanks for all you do!
In the southern hemisphere and it's Spring. I don't live near the forest but I have the beach. After work today it was hot today and I had a headache. I went to My favourite beach and went for a walk then a naked swim. It was so cold but refreshing. Got out standing on the beach and a black stingray goes past. Love nature it's amazing
Great Video, I would add having a good relationship with partner and family, relaxed home environment, house plants, pets and trying something new and random which helps break up a routine.
I absolutely loved hearing about your RC car hobby! I did not know you were interested in that stuff (I thought it was just the cars!) It was great hearing more about you. Stay warm.
I appreciate you and the time you take to create such thoughtful and helpful content. You definitely are one of the most positive people out there. Wishing you peace and health. Be well.
Thank you for this. I needed to hear this today. I find that the pandemic really makes it harder to stay positive when so many people around me are having a hard time. I am ok but it's an effort.
Perfect timing for this video. Our lives will only be improved by putting forth the effort to be positive. I am currently working on starting a bullet journal to help create positive balance to my life. Sending positive vibes to you, Crystal and Olive 😸
Love you and Crystal! Living in BC helps to feel positive! I love this message! Although, having control over life is an illusion because unexpected issues pop up and, Damn! WTF just happened!
Come on, that first shot of a muscular man with a beard, beanie hat and flanel shirt, with all those pine trees in the background.... that's so Canadian 😂
It's a beautiful thing when you find habits that make you happy. Something I've found that only comes with time and experience is the ability to recognize what makes you happy and what feeds into negative emotions. It's strangely not always obvious to recognize what habits serve you and which do not. We often habitually do things that serve only to bring us down, and seldom stop to reflect on why.
There is so much to be sad about in the world, we could spend the rest of our lives dwelling. OR we can be happy and work towards change. It's good to be aware, but we can only digest so much. I've been vegan for 15 years (and I'm 25) I don't need to watch videos of animals suffering everyday to stay vegan, I just know the right thing to do. Bad news is addictive, I set boundaries with people that are just telling me all the sad things that are happening in the world today.
I LOVE this! Mindless consumption is so bad… a conscious life is so enriching. Love your forest scenery! What did we do before social media 🤪 Thanks for this. All the way from SA 🇿🇦
You’re definitely right about starting your day off right. It really does set the whole tone of the rest of the day. My goal when I first wake up is to read and meditate on Gods Word in the Bible then go for a walk to get me going. Have a great weekend, Derek! - Derek :)
Ha, making lists even if I know I will do it anyway just to check the box is something I do every day. For the longest time I thought it was selfdeception to make you think you ar actually productive, but it gives me a positive feeling and through that more energy.
Derek, even tho I already knew all this, you posted this video at such a great time for me! It was a awesome reminder just as I was near the bottom at a negative spiral of junk food, negative consumption, bad sleep habits and zero exercise. This was a great push in the right direction!
Love your videos !!! Would love to have your ask me mondays back. Those you answer question when walking in Nature. Great work ! Love from the Netherlands
Avoid toxic negative people and relationships.
That was in there too but it didn't make the final cut. Energy suckers can take the walk! Unless they really need a friend then I am there.

Yes exactly! I went off of being thankful and gratitude but the video was so long already and I didn't articulate my point well so it got cut.

Yeah I've been stopping watching the news myself! Tons of negative energy on it
I like your comments of the shoveling snow and so forth to help others that are maybe not able to do it themselves. That's Awesome!
I either use my energy on playing with my dogs or read or listen to positive people or music

I love this message! Although, having control over life is an illusion because unexpected issues pop up and, Damn! WTF just happened!
Come on, that first shot of a muscular man with a beard, beanie hat and flanel shirt, with all those pine trees in the background.... that's so Canadian 😂
Thank you! I just shared this with my daughters! They are Health Teachers, High School and Middle School!
Thank you so much for posting this video, I'm going to suggest it to my 23 year old son, he really needs to hear this, hi from Edmonton 😃
Great video and solid advice Derek. When I'm feeling down, the best medicine is always time in the woods
⭐️ man, what a gorgeous trail. Thanks for sharing.
I've heard a lot of these points individually but you've put this together incredibly well! This video is a gem, man! One of your best!
Good point on positivity - you gotta keep a good mindset and give that extra effort!
The smile when you start talking about topics you're passionate about...! 🤩
LOVED this video so much! YES to lists!!! Thank you for your energy and sharing with us every week! x x x
I LOVE this! Mindless consumption is so bad… a conscious life is so enriching. Love your forest scenery! What did we do before social media 🤪 Thanks for this. All the way from SA 🇿🇦
Such a timely message that I needed to be reminded of 🙏🏼 thanks Derek !
You make me feel so well and alive when I listen your videos !!! Thanks for everything ✌️😎
You’re definitely right about starting your day off right. It really does set the whole tone of the rest of the day. My goal when I first wake up is to read and meditate on Gods Word in the Bible then go for a walk to get me going. Have a great weekend, Derek! - Derek :)
Thanks a lot! One good habit is to watch your videos. Good vibes from Germany
Just what I needed. Thank you.
Awww so lovely Derek nature is the most precious medicine
The MOST Authentic Human 🙏🙌💕💚
Ha, making lists even if I know I will do it anyway just to check the box is something I do every day. For the longest time I thought it was selfdeception to make you think you ar actually productive, but it gives me a positive feeling and through that more energy.
You are a true uplifter! Sending you much love from the other coast ❤️
Forest bathing is THE BEST!

Such an amazing video, Derek! Thank you for being you! :-)
