My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Almost four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux
And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList
    Thanks for watching!

Reminds me of the summer of 1964. Three of my buddies and I were traveling Europe in a rented Opel. Europe on $5 a Day! We got rooms on the left bank and ate street food. Not having luck with the French ladies, we headed to the Sorbonne. Met some American girls studying at the Sorbonne. They showed us around Paris for the next couple of days. Said goodbye and headed for Amsterdam. And that is another story!

My favorite so far! My wife and I stayed two weeks in the apartment directly above the Shakespeare and Company Café two years ago for our 30th anniversary. Got to know that neighborhood really well. The park next to the L'eglise Saint Julien le Pauvre is a fantastic place to sit and have a cup of coffee (when there's no leaf blowing!). It's also the home to the oldest tree in Paris. Thanks for the memories!

L'eglise Saint Julien le Pauvre is an Eastern Catholic church (Melkite Greek Cathokic church) they belong to the Vatican in Rome but they have kept the byzantine rite of the greek orthodox church thats why the hymns that you hear on the video are sung in the greek language.
@JaySwanson thank you for the lovely tour and generally for the whole series of your tour in Paris!

And I repeat, loving this series of exploring. Wish the leaf blower had not been in the little park next to Shakespeare and Company and you could’ve peaked inside the park. It is small but so lovely, lot of history. Now I’ll tell you a little secret - last time I was in Paris I brought a tablespoon of dirt from Oklahoma and early one morning I was in that park dug a little hole and got a tablespoon of Paris dirt and filled the hole with my Oklahoma dirt. So now part of me is in Paris and part of Paris is in a little bottle on my kitchen windowsill and I look at it every day and smile. Thanks for the memories Jay! 😁

May I recommend one thing? Your eyes communicate a lot. Like, A. Lot. If you’re wearing a mask and talking to the camera please take off the sunglasses. I like it much better when you do that. Gorgeous footage. Gratitude! Keep it coming my brother! Thanks for sharing.
Oh! That first Church you went inside of and heard the choir. I went in there in 2018 and saw a remarkable solo classical piano concert. Keep your eyes peeled for advertisements around that area posted everywhere for that church because the sound in there is amazing and you will hear monsters you’ve never heard of play classical at such a level of mastery It’s hard to believe. What could be better than a setting of a church that was built in the Mediaeval period? It’s one of Paris‘s oldest churches. Tickets were cheap for the concert too, a total bargain.
Wow and that church dedicated to St. Genevieve was spectacular and purposely asymmetrical... thank you for going in there! I never saw that before. Gratitude! Next time I am lucky enough to be in Paris I will go there first on my list.

20:37 Actually, university fees are quite cheap in France, though I do think they're higher for foreign students. For French students, they cost around 100-200 euros for a BA. The most expensive part is probably the cost of living.

19:21 Not quite. "Sorbonne" is a name shared between Paris 1, aka Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris 3, aka Sorbonne Nouvelle, and the former Paris 4, aka Paris-Sorbonne, which merged with Paris 6 aka Pierre et Marie Curie University to become Sorbonne Université. But there is no single university called the Sorbonne.
The building you're standing in front of is called the Sorbonne building, and it houses part of Panthéon-Sorbonne/Paris 1 (which mostly focuses on history, economics, geography etc...) and the Faculty of Letters of Sorbonne Université (so literature, foreign languages...).

This brings back fond memories of me almost getting pickpocketed. Thank goodness for the maître d’ of that resto on the corner beside Shakespeare and Co who alerted me to the pickpocket eyeing me. The shocking part for me was that the pickpocket had a car! 😂 Fun times 🌟
