    The Catahoula line can be purchased at the fish net company. In Jonesville La. It's located in Catahoula parish. I have commercial fished most of my life. I live not far from the manufacturer. It's all we use the cost is around$10.00 a pound. Go on line and order a free catalog they have you covered. Steven McNeely.

      If I am going to fish commercially I don't mind low tar content if I am going to carry a roll for survival I think I'd rather have a high tar content line that will last much longer than low tar line. Buy the good stuff for making raised beds and stuff last thing you want is your line rotting from low tar content your bed collapsing and you get an injury. That being said use different line for different purposes don't break your bank buying super high quality bank line and use it for everything.

    I know this video is a couple of years old now but the only issue I see is that the bank line from Walmart is the twisted type of bank line and the one from Wilderness Outfitters is the braided type of bank line...both are designed for different purposes... The twisted type is for multi use, meant to separate into smaller strands if needed...making fishing line and needle thread for sewing... The braided type is single purpose use, like securing something, say your truck tool box when you lost your lock and don't want to see your tools scattered down the road when you hit a large pot hole...or tying the flaps of a tent shut when you have a faulty zipper...just saying

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose

      +Charles Hill they are both twisted. I agree with you about the braided.

  • @lancecole5338
    @lancecole5338 9 лет назад +35

    I'm sure someone already covered this, but 'Bank Line' is actually tarred so that it will be semi-water impervious, because it is used for water lines associated to 'trot-lining' in and across rivers. I've even seen guys anchor traps with it in the winter (not legal now).
    The reason you want real 'tarred' line, vs the Chinese 'burned motor oil' line, is that the tarred line is sticky, and will hold a knot without slipping (primary purpose beyond waterproofing). If you twist it up (like building a bushcraft pack frame), it won't come undone on you, or have knots loosen.
    Finally, you can get the Catahoula (only mfg that I am aware of in the States) line from most real hardware stores (I have bought it from Home Depot and from ACE Hardware, in the past). Regardless of where, you're going to pay from $14 to $18 for a roll of the good stuff.

  • @raveonwave
    @raveonwave 2 года назад +3

    There’s twisted or braided line. I actually like twisted line because you can easily separate it and use single piece for making a lash or simply fixing many things. Like having three different lines in one.

  • @JohnCapps

    Twisted and braided bank line are very different and have different uses. If you compare bank line you must compare the same types. The one that unravels easily (twisted) does so on purpose. The braided is meant to stay together. It looked like you might have had braided Pathfinder and twisted Walmart. Anyway love your vids, be blessed Bryan.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  10 лет назад +2

      shanes channel I agree, it is; but if you ever get your hands on the good stuff you will totally understand why so many people recommend bank line. There really is no comparison. You know how the Walmart line just seems to be determined to unravel, almost without even touching it? The Catahoula line is just the opposite. You have to try to untwist it on purpose if you want to break it down into smaller strands. The brand I got from the Pathfinder Store is Catahoula. You can get it in Amazon too. If you're interested, here's a shameless Associate link (supports this channel): survivalonpurpose.com/Catahoula-Bankline There are a bunch of sizes to choose from, just make sure you are looking at twisted, tarred line. I bought some of the braided and it is strong, but very stiff and you can't really break it down into smaller strands very easily. Thanks for watching. - Bryan

I'm not saying to buy junk, but there is a lot of good quality gear available now (yes, some of it comes from China). Do some research, get what you can afford and PRACTICE with what you have. In addition, when you buy something from, in the case the pathfinder store, and it's a bit more money, just remember how much education those RUclipsrs are giving. The bottom line for me is that you buy items that fit the purpose of what you intend to do with at a price you can afford! Simple! ... I use it for gear lines, clothes lines, tents and so on. I've also only used the #60 braid which I have never pushed past the 500lb mark. 400+lbs was the most I've ever done and that was more of an act of desperation. While I wouldn't advise it for use as a suspension cot grid, I did hold my big butt off the ground.

    The catahoula line is made by my home. you can get at any hardwhare store for not much more that the cheap one and you dont have to pay a middle man. I used both. For one you will its way stronger than you think. We been using this stuff for years and years. But ever since Dave canabury used it or crpl corner and thought of using it. Now they say certain name brands. Everyone thinks automatically they need because he uses it. It must be way better. Im so over people endorsing things as the be all. And dont even know what its really designed for. The catahoula string is made in the dip or dunk method which allows it to be a bit thicker. But thats not always best. In really hot temps the stuff get all.over your hands and gear. Its not like you using this stuff to build a house. Its to be used to get you out of a pinch. All we ever used was the catahoula brand because thats what we have. But ive used walmarts as well and is a great product very strong They also sell braided line which is easy to tell apart the blue label is twisted and the red label is braided . Which dont unwrap at all. The easy unwrapping kind is really good to unwrap and sew things together. People dont turn your nose up over name brands. I swear i see so many people with excat same gear because they chase brands.

    I really like Dave Canterbury stuff, but for US$18 - I'd rather go for Para-cord to get a greater variety of uses. But I guess there are thousands of Specialized products for sale, so the Canterbury tarred line maybe has a special purpose I don't know about. In Australia we have two main options Bricklayers line which is a very high tensile strength plaited cord @ a reasonable cost. Only comes in white or flouro colors. Then there is the General use Australian Military cord called "Hootchie Cord" - Hootchie being a shelter half. It's a very strong plaited cord, about 450lb breaking strain and comes in any color, so long as it's OD Green. Both are great, useful cordage and have a place in your kit BUT I always carry 10 or 20 yards (or more!) of various colors of Para-cord. Oh one last point, both types of the lighter cord are tightly plaited and it almost impossible to un-ravel it, even should you want to, which is one reason like to carry para-cord too.

    I love Dave Canterbury and his channel. But I find most of his prices to be over the top. There must be a happy medium between the costly Pathfinder bank line and the cheap stuff at Walmart. Also, although the Walmart line is inferior to the bank line sold by Dave's store, it may, in fact, be suitable for a myriad of tasks. For example, a person can accomplish a lot with hand made cordage made from bark, although it won't match the strength of modern cordage. A lot of people with limited incomes will have to make choices in regard to the gear they procure. Of course, I think that is the central message of this fine channel.

      Kayakwinds I know what you mean about some of prices on the gear Dave has. I don't necessarily think his prices are high for the stuff he sells, just that he sells some higher end stuff. Having said that, the bank line I got from The Pathfinder Store was Catahoula brand which is available on Amazon but is a little higher. There are some other brands that might be as good, I haven't checked them all out. And, yes, the Walmart stuff might be just fine for most uses, but after using both I definitely prefer the "better" kind. However, you are right, I try to point out good choices on this channel and I think if you are on a really tight budget there are other items where quality makes a bigger difference than bankline. The Walmart stuff is OK and you could put the extra cash towards a good, high value knife like a Schrade or Mora. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your viewpoint. - Bryan

    Are they both the same type? Some are braided, some are not. Usually the braided will come unraveled regardless of manufacturer. Good thing it allows for smaller diameter string for fishing, sewing repairs, etc. The non braided will not desperate thus easier to work with.

    The tared bank line at Academy Surplus is every bit as good (and stiff) as the Pathfinder brand and cost half as much if you include shipping.
    As an insulator by trade I have owned a lot of old hickory knives. They are not as good as everyone makes them out to be. I used to put tape on the handles new, so the handles would last longer because the rivets come loose and the handles come off. The blades also break under stress not being all that good of steel.

    So for twice the price you get stickyer, stiffer and stinkyer. Same break strength though? I've used Wal-Mart bank line for years and I know it lasts all season long under water and tied to trees on the bank for trot lines. How much longer do you need it to last? I don't need extra tar for my knots to hold either. So, exactly what do I get for paying twice the price? You can't show me it lasts longer or that it is stronger because you did'nt do a real field long term test.

      Ozark River Rat I guess it depends on what you are using it for. it sounds like you are using it for what it was intended, fishing. I absolutely defer to your opinion there, I have never used it for fishing. I was only comparing the qualities for cordage in a bushcraft or camping scenario. For me, the issue isn't whether it lasts longer, just how easy it is to work with for the uses I need. I like the stickier, stiffer feel. That's the reason I wanted bank line instead of just regular nylon cord, like we use in construction. I had several questions about the difference and I was curious myself so I got some and made the video. I appreciate you taking the time to watch it and share your experience. It's good to get other view points from someone like you who has used something for a while. So, for the record, yes I think it is the same break strength and there may not be a difference in how long each kind lasts. But I have to tell you, I still like the Catahoula Brand, at least for camping and bushcraft. It's a good thing we have choices, otherwise we couldn't even have this discussion. Thanks. - Bryan

    My friend; if you are going to make a comparison of something, please items that are equal. These are two different kinds of bankline. Please compare banklines of similar construction. Thank You.

      I am not sure why so many people have said that. Check the video again. Both of the lines I compared were twisted. I know Catahoula makes both twisted and braided because I have purchased both. But, again, both lines I compared in this video were twisted. Edit: I just checked the Self Reliance Outfitters website (formerly the Pathfinder Store) and their bank line looks to be all twisted. In fact, it’s been a while since I made this video but I think I remember I had to search around to find some braided bank line just a to check it out myself. I don’t think the Pathfinder Store sold braided line back them either.

    You have to know the difference between "braided" bank-line and "twisted". The twisted bankline will indeed separate into 3 strands and the braided one stays together on the ends when cut. You can get the good braided stuff at the Walmart. You are not comparing apples to apples here! Twisted has its uses and braided its own uses, but they are not the same.

    I can honestly say that I haven't been in a Walmart for many years (thankfully) except to try to buy ammo, and since they have little if any of that around here, not even that. I'm surviving just fine. Actually, I think I'm feeling better than fine because of it. When somebody gets the bright idea to set up a bunch of brick-and-mortar stores that sell (at a reasonable price) a comprehensive line of the best of whatever product it is, including ammo, tools, firearms, clothing, electronics, sporting goods, food, etc., and give back to the communities they serve, Walmart will find they have some serious competition on many levels. After watching this video, I contacted you, asking which bankline (cheap vs. premium) would be the better option for a one year hike across North America, as far as price and quality. You recommended the Catahoula.
    I’ve watched your videos for quite awhile now, and I’ve learned that your recommendation are pretty spot-on. I noticed a few posts in the comments section, a bit snarky, suggesting that cheaper varieties of bankline are pretty much just as good as the Catahoula brand. And I thought: hmm....let’s find out.
    So, I used both the Catahoula and the cheap bankline from Wal-Mart for VERY unscientific experiments, trying to figure out if cheap bankline is as durable and reliable as Catahoula, as some posts have suggested. For example, the SOG Pillar is my EDC. Great knife, but I have large hands, and the handle is quite narrow, so I wrap cordage around it so it feels more comfortable and secure. I’d been using paracord, but switched to bankline for my “experiment.” I had zero problems with the Catahoula. In fact, when I realized it just wasn’t going to crap out, I removed the Catahoula bankline, replacing it with cheap Walmart bankline.
    After testing the cheap stuff, I re-wrapped the handle with the same Catahoula line I had removed, and it’s still on my Pillar, right now, and I still haven’t had a single issue with it.
    As for the cheap stuff, I didn’t even make it through an entire day before it started fading horribly. Some areas had fade, or rubbed off onto my hands and shirt, where it was touching the knife handle as it hung from my belt. After just two or three days, some portions of the cheap stuff were nearly white. I also noticed that it had a tendency to fray and unravel at the ends, where I cut the cordage. Both the Walmart and Catahoula banklines were braided, so that should not have happened.
    I also tested how well each variety held up to being scraped across hard, rough surfaces (like you would expect if you tied it to a tree, or using it as emergency boot/shoe strings, for example).
    My conclusion?
    If you plan to use bankline in a one-and-done type of situation - like a day-hike, camping for two or three days, etc. - where you won’t mind using it, then tossing it out, definitely choose the cheap stuff. However, if you plan on using it for long periods, tying and untying it, reusing it, DEFINITELY choose the Catahoula, unless of course you don’t mind crashing to the ground in the middle if the night, because the cheap bankline you’re using to hang your hammock, frayed and weakened from friction against tree bark.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  5 лет назад

      I agree but I prefer the twisted to the braided.

    • @WinStunSmith
      @WinStunSmith 5 лет назад

      Survival On Purpose: Oh, definitely. For at least 90 percent of anything I’ll ever need it for, I’d absolutely go for the twisted. It’s way more versatile. I only tested, and referenced the braided, because I bought one of those smaller Catahoula rolls, the really squat rolls, specifically to wrap knife handles and put in my EDC kit. As much as I know LOGICALLY that the twisted is a smarter option, seeing those little unraveled ends bugs me...LOL.
      That, and I wanted to get across that you really wouldn’t want to rely on the cheap stuff for emergency use, long-term use/reuse, and definitely not for survival. I forgot to mention it, but the Walmart bankline, at least here at my local store in Oklahoma, looks and feel EXACTLY like the good stuff. Even smells a bit..lol.
      BUT....
      I dug a bit, found out it wasn’t treated with actual tar, but with some kind of weird, epoxy-like stuff. It performs LIKE A CHAMP.......for about an hour...LOL.

    Hey Brian, it appears that you may not be aware that there are two different types of bankline -- twisted (apple) and braided (orange)? It looks like the Walmart spool is twisted -- as the Catahoula Mfg. label is blue -- while the Pathfinder is braided -- Catahoula's red label if you were to buy through NetsandMore.com. And when it comes to tying knots, like for a ridgeline for a tarpaulin shelter, yes the braided is the type to use. However the twisted type is more versatile. So, if you need to mend a tear in your pants or do some fishing the twisted is the go to type because it can be untwisted and used like you would the internals of any other paracord. Also the method of taring the line differs between manufacturers. As well as it costs less to manufacture twisted. Ergo the price difference between the two examples. Just something to consider.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  4 года назад

      Actually, the Catahoula I showed here (that I bought from Pathfinder) was twisted. I also bought some Catahoula braided at the same time but I don't like it for much of anything. It just seems a little too rough for many knots (at least to me). It does have the advantage of not coming untwisted. Diffeent strokes.....

    The tar is really useful if your going to use it as actual Bank or trot line... and yes knots will definitely hold better... However if you like some of the qualities of Para Cord then the Walmart bankline will be better suited to your needs... The Stickyness and inability to untie knots can be a major annoyance... And if your looking for an affordable nylon cordage thats strong and easier to untie then the Walmart brand is probably a better choice.... If your actually going to set up a trot line then i would get Dave's or Memphis Net's bank line.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose

    • @rainmechanic
      @rainmechanic 9 лет назад

      I actually did some more in depth research on that tarred bank line and what ive come up with is that Nylon Cord does not need to be tarred for the same reasons that Hemp rope was originally tarred..... However what the tarring does accomplish with Nylon Rope is to markedly enhance its resistance to UV decomposition.. Mildew, Water borne parasites/organisms, and enhance knot holding.... So on second thought this would probably be desirable characteristics if you had to use this cordage over a long life span... I may purchase some of the higher quality bank line to see if its easier to work with.... I would imagine being stiffer enhances its ability to resist tangling.

    Next time I go to Hampton I'm gonna stop at Bass Pro, Dave Canterbury says they carry the good stuff there too. Excuse to go to Bass Pro, maybe.... I picked up about 40 feet of carbon fiber aviation wire lacing, in aviation it's sometimes called spot tie. I wound it on a paper clip and put it in my cordage pocket on my pack, but I could put it on a key ring. It's waxed so it stays together really really good. It's not really that expensive online. Edit, I read that and pulled that cordage out of my pack and put it on my key ring. 40 feet of extra edc cordage, same size as my whistle. Cause in a real "survival" situation all I'll probably have on me is my keys and if I'm lucky my belt knife, not likely my pack.

There's a bunch of websites, that sell it. it will hold straight out just like that tarred bank line. it's lighter, not as strong but it's multi ply, waxed etc. edit, I guess it's nylon. Strong as a zip strip it's designed for wire tying. But I said hey I can wind a mess of this up and take up no space, it ties tight and is really strong. would be great in an emergency I think.

    If it is not stronger, I would find the tar an issue. I know the Walmart stuff unravels, but that is what a lighter an overhand knot are for. But have wondered why buy from DC, just because he recommends it. You decide.

      Tim Barton Well, some of the Catahoula Bank line is on Amazon, but the only place I could find #18 was in Dave's store. At least, it wasn't on Amazon and if I'm going to buy it from somewhere else at the same price as DC sells if for I choose to support him. I have bought a fair amount of gear from the Pathfinder Store and all of it has been first rate quality at what I consider a fair price.
