His mom was in the audience and he had a cold. The Righteous Brothers were known at Blue-Eyed Soul. We had great music way back when. This was 58 years ago. He just opens his mouth and it flows. No strain. He had two children, Bobby Jr. and Kalin. Bobby passed away in 2003 a couple weeks after The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame.
Bobby Hatfield was married again several years later. Had 2 more kids daughter Vallyn and son Dustin. I heard but don't know if it's true, that his first wife married him but hadn't gotten a divorce from her first husband.😥
I was 23 when Bobby sang Unchained Melody on The Andy Williams Show. It was the Valentine’s Day special and he was dressed to the nines! Every woman in American who heard Bobby sing fell in love with him that night. The song was written in 1955 for the film Unchained. It was about a man who was incarcerated and longing for his wife and children, wondering if they would be there when he got out. This explains the odd name for a love song. The film didn’t do well at the box office but the song was a hit. It has been used in countless venues, but Bobby’s live version was the absolute best! He was a true counter tenor so he wasn’t singing falsetto. RIP Bobby. PS I really enjoyed your respectful response and calm demeanor. Sometimes young people don’t really get the songs we older folks grew up with. But, your appreciation is very much appreciated. I am now 80 and still love this song! 🥰
@@OutlanderAnatomy Just a Great comment Outlander! Here it is close to Valentines Day again..and you educated me about the timing close to Valentine's Day back in 1965...the years the first Baby Boomers were graduating from HS...and some going off to Viet Nam, leaving their first real loves at home. Bobby’s flights into the stratosphere stun everyone, but it’s his low notes that make my tummy wobble ( ‘godspeed your love’ ). The chest resonance he uses makes these notes sound so soulful, so meaningful.
This version is even better than the studio recording that charted twice. It was the theme song for the movie UNCHAINED in 1955. Bobby with his good looks, charm, talent and soulful delivery captures male and female hearts decades later. RIP Bobby Hatfield you are missed

The blue eyed soul duet that got its name from performing for black US soldiers. Someone shouted out, “That’s righteous, Brother!” And the name stuck. This is Bobby Hatfield. Thanks for reminding me what the young men and women of that era were experiencing..you expressed it so well. It is amazing what emotion, just the TV performance can summon...now add youth and politics and war to that....oh my.
The song is named after the music, it is an unchained melody, and he could sing it exactly as it was meant to be. Hundreds, possibly thousands, have done this, but this will always be his song!
1965, live, no auto tune! This video should be used as a lesson on how to perfectly blend chest and head voice and to tastefully perform amazing runs. He makes it all look so easy! Thanks for this.
No head voice. Bobby was a rare countertenor and this was well within his 4 1/2 octave range (B2-Eflat 6). Listen to Summertime for some of his highest notes. Mugnify was right about Bobby singing in 5 octaves
Name any, ANY artist of today with his range, his artistic interpretation, his voice and talent. If and I mean IF you can come upe with a name, give that artist a wired, handheld microphone with no studio equipment, no Autotune, and let their voice soar to the heights he did live without breathing hard as they end. No on but Bobby!
This song was originally written for a movie about a guy in jail wondering if his lady is going to wait for him or not. The movie was called Unchained, so this is the 'Unchained' Melody... You've Lost That Loving Feeling - featuring both of the two Righteous Brothers with their wonderfully contrasting/ harmonising voices - should be next on your RB reactions playlist. You'll love it! :-)
HAS to also watch of righteous Bros (1) Summertime (Bobby).(2). Brown- eyed Girl (Bill) (3) I Just Want to Make Love to You. (4) Loving Feeling. He'll hear Blue-eyed Soul.. And yes, don't interrupt the flow. Lots of this info can wait, (but it is his channel). Range of 5 octaves..
Loved this reaction 💖💖💖💖 For me, personally, this is the gold standard version of this song. Now some will disagree with me on that & that's totally cool. To each their own. All art is subjective & music is a form of art. Okay, now for a little song history info: "Unchained Melody" was writteb by Alex North & Hy Zarat in 1955 for a little known movie called "Unchained". Todd Duncan, an African- American opera singer from back in the day, is/ was the one who first sang "Unchained Melody" & it was in a prison scene in the movie "Unchained". Roy Hamilton did a cover version of this song shortly after, also in 1955, and it was Roy Hamilton's version that remained to be both Bobby Hatfield's & Elvis's favorite version. The latter is according to Bill Medley which he revealed in an interview. Bill Medley is the other "Righteous Brother" who was/ is the bass- baritone to Bobby Hatfield's counter- tenor. Bill Medley was friends to both Bobby & Elvis (Presley). The Rigteous Brothers were quite simply great in my opinion. For duets by them, do check out "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "You're My Soul & My Heart's Inspiration", and "You'll Never Walk Alone". For another great solo by Bobby Hatfield: "Ebb Tide". For two great solos by Bill Medley: "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" & "Brown- Eyed Woman". Others I am sure will make other suggestions. I know there are other great songs by The Righteous Brothers but I don't want to make my list too long 😀 Also: Another movie that featured "Unchained Melody" is "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze & Demi Moore & Whoopi Goldberg. GREAT reaction 👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹 Thanks again! Peace ✌, light 🌞, & love 💖 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕
Bobby was simply great. if you are uncertain, listen to 'summertime' (version introduced by Bill). and 'crying in the chaple'.or I believe or somewhere (The last is long.)
This live performance on the Andy Williams show in 1965 has a more dramatic ending than the studio recording that was the original hit and became a big hit again after being featured in the movie, Ghost, in 1990. I always loved the original song, but this ending absolutely blew me away when this video popped up on my phone 3 years ago.
It’s called Unchained Medley because he is a prisoner singing to his love on the outside and he’s asking her to wait for him to lose those penitentiary chains and be free to be with her again. This is the last song played at every high school dance when I was a teen.
The the story goes, early in their career the Righteous Brothers played for a black audience (it was illegal in that region at that time because of segregation). After the show someone from the audience approached them and said, "You brothers are righteous". It was a huge compliment. They felt so honored, they chose to preform as the Righteous Brothers from that day forward.
Yes they did! ....and the Staging and Sound Recording of this Live TV version are AMAZING. Plus the Interview with Andy Williams is Excellent...revealing their Stage personalities. Mugnify did a good job with this Reaction.
This classic song was composed by multi-Academy Award winning composer Alex North with lyrics by Hy Zaret for the prison movie "Unchained" (1955). Hence the title of the song. Ten years later in (1965) "Bobby Hatfield" of the Righteous Brothers will give a live television performance that was one for the ages. His performance of 'Unchained Melody' has become the standard for which every artist is measured by. His 1965 television performance which was (58) years ago is considered one of the greatest live singing performances ever in the history of television. The rest as they say is history.
The song "Unchained Melody" came out in a movie called "Unchained" in 1955. And the first person to sing it was the First African American Opera Singer, Mr. Todd Duncan. This song has had over a fifteen hundred artists singing it and about six hundred and seventy something sang it in multiple languages as well. It was the most played song of the Twentieth Century in all of America and the UK. As time went on it was played in several movies but it really, regained popularity in 1990 in the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. And the movie was also bad ass. Anyway the song "Unchained Melody" lyrist Hy Zaret and the melody was by Alex North. Like I said before many, many artists have sang this song including Linda Ronstadt and even Elvis Presley but the best version in my opinion was the original singer Mr. Todd Duncan and next to him needless to say was Mr. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Nobody as far as I know has done it better. He really killed it. Now you know why the type of music that the Righteous Brothers is labeled "Blue Eyed Soul". For obvious reasons of course. To this day the only person who does have a so-called "perfect pitch" though is Mariah Carrie. They just don't make beautiful romantic love songs like this anymore do they? Well anyway young man, I really enjoyed listening to it. I really, really did. Have a Blessed Day Amigo. See ya'.
I have read that his parents were in the first row and when he hit the last high note he bit his lip being very nervous and was happy he didn't disappoint.
Nearly 60 years ago and I haven't heard anyone do this song better than Bobby. But to really dig into the Righteous Brothers, you need to hear both "brothers" (they weren't related) together to fully understand why they were called Blue-eyed Soul. Please react to You've Lost That Loving Feeling, which was the most played song on American radio and television in the 20th century. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/uOnYY9Mw2Fg/видео.html
Bobby's voice is known as counter-tenor. ( He was still able to use his childhood higher voice which is different to falsetto, which Barry of the Bee Gees uses). Bobby used to become extremely nervous before singing (including vomiting) and had a heavy cold when singing this song which I have loved for 56 years. He had a big vocal range and was a master of singing.
"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965
Your 5 or 6 pitches was exactly right. He went 5 notes up the pentatonic scale, then one more to arrive at the same note he started at but one octave (or 5 steps plus 1) higher.
Definitely. I don't believe any of these "first time hearing" videos are telling the truth. In this case, he should have mentioned Bobby Hatfield in the subject line.
@@lizardas Elizabeth, if it's his first time hearing the song he might not yet have heard of Bobby! I mean did you know who he was the very first time you heard him? Of course you didn't, and it was much harder to get information back then also. Point is, not everyone knows who Bobby Hatfield is the first time they hear the Righteous Brothers music. Have a good day and thank you for the reply!
@@debbers I doubt that it's his first time hearing it. Otherwise, how did he know to choose it for a video? I've never seen a "first time hearing" video where someone didn't like the song. Also, if you're going to bother making a video, how hard is it to google a little information about it? I just thought a little respect for the singer was due.

Bobby Hatfield, who is originally from Wisconsin, is deceased. I saw the Righteous Brothers at the Crystal Grand in Lake Delton, Wisconsin just months before Bobby passed away. There stage show was hilarious. Bill Medley still sings professionally at 80.
the song was originally from a movie in 1955 called "Unchained." it was a 10 years old song by he time Bobby Hatfield sang it. But this live version is miles above the recorded version. No one, not even Elvis ' version can touch this. the Ghost movie was NOT about this song, the song stands on it's own merit long before Ghost.
Blue Eyed Soul This is one of the Righteous Brothers Bobby Hatfield Bill Medley is the other duo member. They decided Bobby should record this as a solo. You need to react to their song. I Just Want To Make Love To You
No Falcetto..counter tenor Bobby Hatfield's voice was incredible. You will love hearing the recommendations @sammy_the_uncool2702 made for starters. The Righteous Brothers are from Orange County CA where you wouldn't think souful sounds would come from..their more doo wop 1964 Moon Glow album was the music they loved. They were inducted into the Rock n Roll in 2003 the year Bobby died. The baritone Bill Medley is still performing at age 82 & the shows with his current partner Bucky Heard are great. Pure talent that I could tell you too loved hearing.
This song was from a film made in the 50s. Black prisoner singing this hoping his wife would be waiting for him. Words the same but totally different melody.x
My understanding’s is the song was written for a 1955 movie Unchained about a prisoner about to be let out. Three other artists recorded it in 1955 and all were in the charts. The Righteous Brothers recoded it on the B Side, flip side of another song. Looks like the B side is the one remembered.
Great reaction from a young man seeing the music I grew up with. I remember dancing with my college sweetheart to this tune. Haven't seen her in decades, but still remember that dance.
Yes, I believe Bill said they were young and stupid, and needed the money 😥 it was such bad luck as we now know. I never tire of watching Bobby sing this, everything about him and the song are simply sublime. He and Bill were so classy!
I love watching younger people react to these older songs. I mean, I'm only in my 50's, but my dad and I would go to car shows and they played all the old classics. So I was exposed early. The talent people had to have back then, just seems to overshadow most of what we have today. Glad you found the Righteous Brothers.
Mull this over, my friend. At the time this was recorded, America was getting in way over its head in the Vietnam War. Imagine all the young women with loves across the Pacific in South East Asia. The three words, "wait for me", took on an entirely new and much deeper meaning. One can't truly understand the impact of songs without first considering the life changing events that the people in that era were experiencing. Your reaction should touch many of those who were living in the mid 60s in a very deep way. You treated their precious memories respectfully. Too many kids never made it back home. And too many who did make it back home were scarred beyond measure. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment. It's important to remember the historical context and the impact that songs have on people's lives during challenging times. I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad that my video resonated with you.
From an "old guy" ... glad you liked it and yeah, good on you for both recognizing the song (you hear it in "Ghost" BTW) and Bobby Hatfield's vocal range; that's a "high C" at the end ...few can do that. I'd also point out what you failed to catch even though your "youth" should have in the "MTV Generation" ... the yellow globe stage lights when he gets to the verse about "flow to the Sea" ... even in 1965 they knew what they were doing ... the pan out was AMAZING !!! Also, you didn't catch the "biting of the lower lip" at the end ... back story, his Mom was in the audience and the first time she saw him perform "live" ... and he knew he nailed it !!! Much appreciation for you reaction vid ... super cool !!!
No auto tune or anything, just pure God given perfection. No one sings it like Bobby Hatfield. R.I.P.

The song is named after the music, it is an unchained melody, and he could sing it exactly as it was meant to be. Hundreds, possibly thousands, have done this, but this will always be his song!
No auto-tune back in the day...just beautiful natural voices~That is what made the music before the 80's so special!
1965 was the year I graduated from high school, and we loved us some Bill and Bobby.
First time today listening to it, shall be a lot more times as the day goes on, such a lovely song and wonderful singer.
Thanks
1965, live, no auto tune! This video should be used as a lesson on how to perfectly blend chest and head voice and to tastefully perform amazing runs. He makes it all look so easy! Thanks for this.
No head voice. Bobby was a rare countertenor and this was well within his 4 1/2 octave range (B2-Eflat 6). Listen to Summertime for some of his highest notes. Mugnify was right about Bobby singing in 5 octaves
@@merawaters Thanks for the clarification.
Yes!! That's the song...Bobby was singing this for, and no one has been able to sing it better... Thanks for ur reaction..
Don't think so

@@darlaflorence7428 What don't you think?
No auto tune , no digital enhancement …… just pure talent .
Outstanding performance
Sadly, Bobby passed a long time ago. His voice was AMAZING!
Loved this reaction 💖💖💖💖
For me, personally, this is the gold standard version of this song.
I know there are other great songs by The Righteous Brothers but I don't want to make my list too long 😀
Also: Another movie that featured "Unchained Melody" is "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze & Demi Moore & Whoopi Goldberg.
GREAT reaction 👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹
Thanks again!
Peace ✌, light 🌞, & love 💖 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕
You ain't wrong....
@@flashrat1 Thank you 💗 My Dad would agree with us both 😄
I doubt if there's too many who would disagree...
Bobby was simply great. if you are uncertain, listen to 'summertime' (version introduced by Bill). and 'crying in the chaple'.or I believe or somewhere (The last is long.)
I completely agree with you. This is a perfect and iconic performance. (Bobby's version is better than that done by Elvis)
The ladies go crazy over them
just bobby
This live performance on the Andy Williams show in 1965 has a more dramatic ending than the studio recording that was the original hit and became a big hit again after being featured in the movie, Ghost, in 1990. I always loved the original song, but this ending absolutely blew me away when this video popped up on my phone 3 years ago.
If you thought this was amazing, listen to Bobby singing Summertime live, it’s off the charts! ❤️
U just sold a million records in 15 minites. I love you. Thats why were here. Love.
It's been covered by alot of artists but nobody does it like Bobby(RIP)
This song was meaningful to many soldiers going off to fight in Vietnam.
The live orchestra killed it too!
Yes they did! ....and the Staging and Sound Recording of this Live TV version are AMAZING. Plus the Interview with Andy Williams is Excellent...revealing their Stage personalities. Mugnify did a good job with this Reaction.
He hits 27 notes in 4 different octaves. Also, he was very sick that night and his mother was in the crowd. Talk about pressure and nailing it!
This was a performance on a tv show, The Andy Williams Show.
They don't make love songs like this anymore!! I'm SO happy I was born in this time!
See ya'.
This video is from a time where there was no auto tune or colored contact lenses!!
This was my favorite as a teen. I'm 77 today.
77? I'm sure we can sneak you into a rave without ID lol
I have read that his parents were in the first row and when he hit the last high note he bit his lip being very nervous and was happy he didn't disappoint.
Only his mother was in the audience
@@LoveCats9220 my bad lol glad you corrected me
His mom is the lady in the blue dress, just behind him to his right....
Dude, Dude, Dude, you can't be interrupting this , Dude, beautiful, Dude, song..Dude
You need to listen to You've Lost That Loving Feeling which has BOTH members of the Righteous Brothers!
And this is just one of them singing. with both of them, they are such powerhouses.
You know what kills me about this every single time I hear it is - at the end. He didn't even try.
"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965
Great music. No auto-tune needed for these guys. Watch their other vids.
Your 5 or 6 pitches was exactly right. He went 5 notes up the pentatonic scale, then one more to arrive at the same note he started at but one octave (or 5 steps plus 1) higher.
the best live vocal recording ever.
Love these guy(s). Listen to a song with both because they compliment each other so well. My fantastic era.
The most beautiful, romanrtc song ever. Bobby Hatfield always.❤
Voice of an angel! He gives me chills!
It is that song. live one take and Bobby owned it. May he rest in peace.
Honestly, if I had to pick the greatest single song ever written--- this would be it.
Now you need to do "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by the brothers, that will be a real treat for you as both of them are in this one!
Yep...they rock that song.
@@thinking6307 They really do! Thank you for your reply!
Still the most beautiful song written and sung. Still amazing.
I'm sure you heard it somewhere, this song has been covered by so many people it's unreal! This song is timeless!
@@lizardas I have enough respect for the both of us, why are you so negative, this is supposed to be a pleasant place, if you don't like it here, why are you here? Maybe you should just go to your safe spot and leave this nice man alone!
This was from their appearance on The Andy Williams Show. Iconic.
Bobby Hatfield, who is originally from Wisconsin, is deceased. I saw the Righteous Brothers at the Crystal Grand in Lake Delton, Wisconsin just months before Bobby passed away. There stage show was hilarious. Bill Medley still sings professionally at 80.
I really enjoyed watching you react to this song. *Subscribe*
Great reaction- one of the best I've seen.
Romance was in all these old songs..Loved them❤
I’m 67, and every time I hear this song I get goosebumps. It’s so smooth and crisp. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
the song was originally from a movie in 1955 called "Unchained." it was a 10 years old song by he time Bobby Hatfield sang it. But this live version is miles above the recorded version. No one, not even Elvis ' version can touch this. the Ghost movie was NOT about this song, the song stands on it's own merit long before Ghost.
It's called Unchained Melody because there was a movie called Unchained to which this is the theme.
Blue Eyed Soul
This is one of the Righteous Brothers Bobby Hatfield
Bill Medley is the other duo member.
Bobby had a cold when he sung this song that night on the show. RIP Bobby Hatfield
Love your appreciation of this *real* music. Love your cat in the background.
Great reaction, this song does make you sink into a magical world. ❤
I believe they sold the rights to this song years ago. If only they would have known how BIG this song would be over 50 years later. Truly timeless!
I think bobby didn"t expect it. I read in billys book " it was a monster-hit". So he knows... from GER
Yes, I believe Bill said they were young and stupid, and needed the money 😥 it was such bad luck as we now know. I never tire of watching Bobby sing this, everything about him and the song are simply sublime. He and Bill were so classy!
Bobby Hatfield had the most pure and beautiful voice ever
Loved it thank you so much for sharing ❤❤❤
Raw, vocal talent!
