First and foremost, both photographers have so much talent and did such a great job! However, Alexus’ concept resonated the most due to the colors and her usage of her subjects. Really loved how she used kaleb to frame Tia and I also loved how each pose kind of showcased the connection between the two 😄.
I am a digital photo/videogrpher so I am going with digital. Nonetheless her work was more clean and conceptual and the results with a DSLR were amazing. I liked the colorscheme, the outfit of the models, really high fashion photos, good job!
Both photographers are excellent talents. The young man impressed me the most only because it was film. he was using his digital camera as his polaroid to make his adjustments, very smart. Alexus is straight up a confident fashion photographer! Her use of color, space and composition was superior. They are both winners for me because they were proficient with their tools. Kudos to both.
I’m going with the film photographer even though the digital shooter was incredible. Digital photographers concept and posing was better but knowing how hard the analog shooter had it and how great the result was I have to give him his due respect. I specifically liked the shot where he had the model “throw” her hair. Tough choice though and much respect to both. Great video!
Both photographers were great but Alexus killed it. Her ability to give directions to capture what is on her mind is amazing. She was comfortable, focused, knew what she wanted to do, and her vibe was chill! Awesome photos!
ALEXUS… Alexus’ vision was extremely clear from the beginning. Clearly a visionary and story teller. Colors, textures, lighting, shadows, shapes, are all brilliant ways to tell your STORY! LET ME SAY, THESE ARE BOTH TWO BRILLIANT ARTIST!
so inspiring to watch the photographers creative process with shooting and commanding the models and both did a fantastic job! although, i would have loved to see more glow and softness from nelson’s pictures as shown in his previous work. Alexus’ shoot resonated with me more because you can tell she is in her comfort zone, she knows the exact outcome she wants and she knows how to execute it perfectly. wonderful job!
Both killed it! 🔥 Alexus resonated with me more - I enjoyed watching how she effortlessly directed that shoot and captured the connection between the two. Also loved the green and call out to Doechii (such a fire mixtape)
I love both concepts but Alexus knocked it out because she was able to capture the intimacy of the couple. Both photographers are inspiring, great video!!!
Love this challenge between film and digital! Can tell both photographers are very talented, however, between the two I say Alexus’ work resonated most with me. I was utterly impressed by her attention to detail and execution. I love the use of shapes, composition and how she directed the models on framing. You can tell she is confident in her ability to cultivate exactly what she’s envisioning. Excellent challenge!
Both did an amazing job. For me Alexus style and directing & forming the models showed her creativity. Her photos turned out unique with so much edge. The vibe was just right!
Both photographers are extremely talented, and I enjoyed watching both of their concepts come to life with the different shooting styles. However, I think Alexus takes this one! Alexus’s perspective on “controlling” the environment and constantly thinking “what more can I do in this space” really shined through in the final pictures. The posing direction and camera angles are immaculate and I love the pop of green.
Wow both photographers did an amazing job!!!! 😍 I think the photos that resonated the most with me would be Alexus’s. I love showcase of black love and the intimacy she captured between them. I also love the color green and the play on texture she did! the lighting against their skin is bomb toooo. She really did that!!! 👏🏾👏🏾
Alexus all the way! She was clear with her vision and purpose for the shoot! I love her explanation of why she uses certain background and color and always keeps the models’ wellbeing top of mind! She had a great command of the session and the models understood their assignment! Congratulations to Alexus! The other photographer is also very good! They both have an amazing future ahead of them in this field!
Loved watching both photographers. Both were amazing!! I resonated with Alexus’ concept more because I love LOVE & love the background choice of color and texture. It’s always amazing to see love portrayed in a fashion sense ❤
WOW, this was so much fun to watch! Both are talented but Alexus’ work and attention to detail resonated with me more. Love that she made her vision come to life, maximizing the little she had in the short time she was given. I’m completely blown away with the creative eye she has- textures, tones, colors, and space while being completely INTENTIONAL with every shot!! Learned so much and enjoyed watching every minute of this!!!
both photographers killed it! kudos to nelson for taking less time and being equipped with the tools to expose properly to get his shots! but i’d have to go with Alexus for capturing love in such rich way through the green hue. i really Lovedd her compositions and skills in posing to bring out the emotions and what she wanted out of the models!
As a medium format shooter myself, I'm going with Alexus all day here. The colors are clarity are 100% on point. Direction, on point. Her models energy, on point!
Such a fun video! Getting to see Alexus in her element shooting tethered with less friction was such a treat. Nelson's slow approach was really cool too, the intention really shines. I love the 'glow' of those b&w shots. They were both so good, but I think Alexus won-her creativity really stole the show! Maybe they should rematch in an environmental portrait session so it's easier for film to keep up haha.
Nice! Nice! Nice! Both did an amazing job. I just picked up an RB67 and this gave me a few ideas. The posing and color grading on those digitals were freaking EVERYTHING!! Glad I found your channel. Will be binge watching today.
Loved the lighting on Nelson. Gosh he was stressed out, but loved the outcome. The contrast, the glow.. Alexus just owned the directions and was great at directing the model, just was flowing. I just find the contrast and colors a tad blank but hey, that just me. Loved both of them. Thanks Mike ! Great video !
Awesome work from both artists and their models did an amazing job. The concept that resonate more with me was from Alexus. Her ability to convey her creative thoughts to the models allowed them to bring life to it… and her skill to blend the softness of the highlights with the lightness of the shadows brought emphasis to the curves and shapes of her subjects…. Loved it ❤️
They both were dope but ALEXUS WAS DOPE!! Her colors, vibe, scheme and concepts were more in tune with what is contemporary and NOW!! The other guy was dope too! His feel what what he was looking for and confidence in being able to execute that was the best to me! They both had something great to contribute! My vote is for Alexus 👍🏾
How fun! what a great challenge. I agree it's totally personal preference, I love both as well and I choose depending on the project and the vibe I want to bring forward. Also I'm a photographer based in LA I'd love to participate.🌸✨
Both great photographers and it would be great to see Nelson's digital shots too - just for reference. Like the grittiness of the film but Alexus' images shone out the best - they captured the energy and chemistry of the couple. Also felt that the flash over powered the skirt/dress on the film images and this for me made them look overexposed, though I feel this is Nelson's style (I checked his IG and I think that's his style). The green backdrop and rug, together with the clothes the couple wore, worked brilliantly for Alexus. Kudos to Nelson for using the Mamiya. I use a 5D mark IV at Uni and they are amazing pieces of kit even today and when you see the final images you can tell why they are still solid cameras.
Nelson is insane, with 15minutes his first choice was an all black cyc?! 😂super dope, i love everything about his approach to shooting and his end result is what i'd like my personal work to reflect, professionally tho I relate to Alexus! Alexus sees several visions and executes as much of whats in our head as possible. I honestly loved the simplicity of this challenge, whatever time and prep they had before hand is great if you let them bring in their model and do their thing. Great content Mike.
Both are outstanding, but Alexus couples editorial shoot resonated with me more because that's something that's not othen seen unless it's an engagement or pregnancy photoshoot.
wow that's hard to make a choice! I TRULY loved both their work for different reasons! I really loved the posing from Alexus's couples session, super inspired, and as a fellow film shooter, I just adore the look of film and he crushed his shots as well!!
Finally I did it, you wore me down. I brought a Pentax 6x7 and a 90mm f2.8 (I did get the leaf shutter version). I am still feeling it out and coming to grips of only getting 10 images a roll vs 15 images I got with my Bronica ETRS 645. Results so far have been good. I shoot a lot of strobe so it's an adjustment shooting the leaf shutter lens with the Pentax. Keep up the good work and content, I'll be watching.
Although I love the shots taken on the Mamiya, I gotta go with Alexus. The professional quality of her images along with her strong skills in composition brought it home for me.
Both were great, but Alexus, triumphs here. She took command, was very professional. I could feel her love of photography. She made each placement of the models so interesting.
Nelson had the tougher task using film, his calm, methodical approach to get the shot in limited frames was great. I prefer shooting film, rarely digital…… but I have to give it to Alexus for her posing and colour vibe.
nelson wins in my book. Love the look of black and white and the expression on the models face alone can tell a novel length story. Both photographers killed it!
Both photographers are great but I am leaning more towards Alexus’ photos. Her photos are absolutely stunning! I love the way she captured the light and the colors. She has a great eye for detail and overall, her composition is fantastic!
This was a dope contest. Digital vs film. Both were amazing. I think digitally for me, alexus edged him out. There’s just to much detail in the pics and the colors really pop
Did the shoots actually came out of the camera that way or where they touched in post? I hate to say it but I’m really team digital this time. I love the lighting the quality and the colors sooo extremely much I feel like analog just couldn’t do it that way
The look of the B&W portraits that Nelson did (especially with the glow) are stunning. Not a fan of the green though I understand Alexus' reasoning here.
Brother Gray, are you ever going to try the digital medium format Pentax 645Z? It would be cool to pair the camera with your 6X7 lenses with the adapter. Peace ☮️ ✌🏾
@@MikeGrayFilm you picked some really good shooters for this one and they both had their own unique style, which was dope. It’s nice to see two different styles battle versus two people doing kind of the same thing.
Both Nice work but is it a fair challeneg? If you had 2 film photographers or 2 digital photographers it might be fair. If you had a digital photographer schoot like a film photographer with only 36 photos and not looking at each photo taken then that would be a challenge. The digital photographer had her camera hooked up to the lap top to see each photo. She can take hundreds if not more photos. Raw or Jpeg. photoshop in the computer and the camera. Histograms, white balance etc... In Film you work for the camera. In digital the camera works for you. .
Ok so maybe you can help me some.. First off I loved him using a flashlight to see to get focus lol. I do the same.. But I might have made the mistake and I purchased a fuji GFX system. I always struggled to get good clean images on film.. Now mind you I am still quite young into the film world.. Only about three years .. But I have tested the waters of what I thought was normal exposures lol ended up with under exposed stuff that was horribly grainy and poor color.. Then I went a year shooting heavily over exposed stuff to see how much I could push the film and in hopes to get more detail and less grainy look. That seems to have went ok with a few shoots but most of those where giving me way too dark of negs so I ended up going the other direction too far lol. The GFX system spoils me badly :(. Its just too easy to take photos with and have them look perfect and be there instantly .. I have MANY film cameras and love them. I have fixed , Calibrated and shot almost all of them. Its very rewarding taking 75+ year old cameras out and taking great photos with them. But I still struggle with getting good clean photos.. I see you hand holding your medium format film cameras and getting amazing results with what looks effortless when you do it.. So far most of the films I have shot have all been lower cost stuff. Fuji Sep 400, Gold 200 .. That kind of stuff. I think the cleanest images I have gotten so far are from Ektar 100.. Of course if im talking good photos on my 645 Bronicas. So my question is I have not yet shot any Portra .. Is Portra 160 shot around 100 ISO going to give me good clean photos? Yes I want some grain :). Its film but I don't want it so bad it looks like HP5 or something lol. Thanks and my answer to your video . I liked the digital shoot better not because of film or digital but I liked the poses and the feel better..
@@MikeGrayFilm Thanks hon. Its going to be my next test then :). Also could you maybe do a detailed video of how you shoot flash photos with film. I tried a shoot and all of my old antique light meters all have needles lol. They are too slow to capture a reading from the flash.. I took my GFX and setup some shots then swapped over to my Bronica and took some shots.. They was not too bad but the exposures where still not quite right.. Exposing for film is just different then digital and id love to see a detailed video on how you manage to get such great results shooting flash and strobes with film :). By the way I love your videos and thanks very much for the great videos as they really do help many people out :).
i feel like if bro would've used the same models, background and color scheme it would've been much closer. I think it was more of the shoot itself why film didn't shine as opposed to the style of photo (I love both Film and Digital)
I was just complaining about how RUclips kind of sucked this weekend then you just saved the day
I really appreciate that man

Man, the flashlight for the focus is the most "manual focus medium format" behavior ever, that's how you know it's real. Cool video!

I would love to be in your challenges will u ever come to NYC ?
Next time Im in NYC we will make it happen, Darius!
@@MikeGrayFilm would love to bro Im gonna follow u on insta and hit u up
i feel like if bro would've used the same models, background and color scheme it would've been much closer. I think it was more of the shoot itself why film didn't shine as opposed to the style of photo (I love both Film and Digital)
Thanks for the feedback brother!
Nice 🔥💯
Thanks 🔥
Hey. This was really dope. I'm a photographer. How can I be a part of this?
If you’re based in LA send an email to mike@mikegrayfilm.com with a link to your work! 🙏🏾
