Bill Russell had the most infectious laugh, rest easy Bill.
Fun fact: Bill Russell was the first black head coach of any major sports team to lead his team to a world title when in 1969 he coached the Boston Celtics to the NBA title.

I believe he was a coach and also a player at the same time, if I recall correctly. Pretty amazing imo.

His track friend Johnny Mathis of Washington High San Francisco. All 3 were huge stars.

Bill Russell was a great winner, winning 11 NBA championships in 13 years with the Celtics. But lets not forget about the two NCAA championships with the USF Dons back in the mid-1950s. He really put that program on the map!!
They say he was a civil rights pioneer, but for me Bill Russell transcended race. I never thought of him as a Black man. He exemplified the greatest attributes of HUMANITY.

Bill Russell did it all, basketball legend, a civil rights activist, a great basketball analyst, and a great American. As a kid I didn't like him because he and the Celtics would defeat Philadelphia. RIP Mr. Russell.

I was stationed in Washington State and I was playing the Military course near FT Lewis with friends and the group in front of me had this really tall man playing with them. As I got closer, I realized it was the Legend himself playing ahead of me. I asked one of my buddies if we should ask for an autograph when we finished our round. He said you want get one, he doesn't give out autographs. So we all watched in awe as Bill Russell and his group finished their round.
He made the Celtics / Lakers rivalry fun to watch!

I was a young teen. Bill Russell owned Slade's Restaurant in Boston. I would go with my father during the summers as he delivered 22 crates of chickens. I was so proud when Bill Russell said, "Hi, Melvin, how are you?" Then he drove off in a Ford Galaxy. I expected a Rolls Royce. Wrong era for fabulously wealthy athletes.
