Awesome video guys, enjoyed every minute. I went to Africa last year but did it as on overland tour and would like to do it independently as you've done. Curious how you resolved the mechanical issues you encountered along the way? Do you by any chance have a website or something else with a bit more detail about the route, inventory, problems you encountered by any chance?
Well, Africa always hands a solution. It most often involves a temp repair until we could find a decent garage. We have a website (holland2africa.wordpress.com) but that does not give you any route details, it does give some writings and pictures. On polarsteps you can find more about the roads we travelled. Its polarsteps.com/holland2africa. I believe there is a movie to be found on this RUclips account which shows that our landcruiser is for sale. Even though it's a terrible movie it will give you some insight about the car and gear we took with us.
Beautiful country but we had to make choices. We were slowly running out of money.. still on my list of countries I would like to visit one day though😉
Hello there, really enjoyed the video! Im driving from London to Cape Town at the end of 2019. Would really appreciate some advice regarding the safety in Northern Africa. Could I maybe email you? Thank you.
Hi Jack, thank you! Just a shame some of the songs have been muted due to copyright:) Anyhow.. great to hear you're going to do a likewise trip! Are you taking the eastern road as well? It's a bit difficult, safety in Northern Africa (or just Africa), as things change every day. We haven't had any issues, but it was always on our minds. I'm afraid I cannot help you with current situations as it mainly requires keeping an eye out for the new, and FB (overlanding groups in particular) is a great tool. If you have any questions about anything feel free though! But please lease me a message on our website as I do not want to give my email in this message. Hi All, it’s been a while since we uploaded this video so I’m not always checking for reactions. Let me know if you have any questions. Always happy to help!
This looks so amazing... Could you please answer my questions, I'd love to do the same. How long did it take you to plan and how long took the journey? What did it entirely cost? Did you use credit cards or all cash? If a card, which one? What was the most challenging situation you've faced? Did you need a carnet de passage every time you crossed a border? I'd really appreciate your answers, anyway, great video! True adventures!
Hi Benjamin Michael von Lichtenwald, thanks for enjoying the movie (a shame some of the music had copyright issues.. but hey!). Planning is a bit difficult. You can take as much time or as little as you want. Fact is, things change in Afrika every day. Besides from your car, I would say about half a year will give you all the time you need. But to be honest, everything can be found on the internet nowadays, so you can also find out along the way. When we went to Africa there were 2 things which we needed to really dive in before we left. 1 is shipping the car from Europe mainland to Egypt, and the other was the border between Egypt and Sudan. But both can now be found on the internet so it's not that difficult anymore. The cost is very difficult to say, it all depends on the needs you have. We didn't visit a lot of parks in eastern africa as they are very expensive. Taking a foreign plated car to a national park in some countries can cost up to 250USD! And that's without driver and passengers.. Also, we did a lot of wild camping, but didn't cut on enjoying life with nice food and beers. So it all depends on what lifestyle you wish to maintain. I believe we averaged just under a 1000 euro's a month. Thats including everything (visa, entertainment, maintenance of the car and so on), but not the purchase of the car and gear. We had 3 credit cards (1 each) but we tried to use as much as possible our normal debit card. We always used ATM's to get cash, but had dollars tucked away for the exchange, and also sometimes payment in dollar is required, although most of those expense can be paid by card nowadays. Please not Sudan is on the Black List and therefore you cannot use any card, you'll have to exchange foreign currency you take into the country (we used dollars). We had a CdP, yes. It seems to be mandatory in Egypt, though recent messages show it is possible to get a TIP. But to be honest, those things can become quite expensive. Having a CdP makes every boarder very easy. And, you have to pay a deposit to get a carnet, which a lot of money (depending on the value of your car, but it's up to you what value to put down on the CdP, the ADAC doesn't check). But that money is wired to your account in a couple of weeks after returning, so it's more of a financial back-up when coming back home. I wouldn't have it any other way, but others seem to be determined to do it without..
@@canneddinners6059 its not too bad actually.. the biggest cost are getting your car through customs in Egypt. I believe we paid somewhere between 1500 and 1800 for 1 car and a bike.. (everything included)

@@holland2africa117 baie dankie vir u antwoord! I noticed all the government web sites are stating its unsafe to travel the Eastern route through Ethiopia and Kenya near the Somalian borders. Was this the same when you went through & did you encounter any issues?
@@charlesskeen , yes. It is true it is not safe near the somalian borders. When we went to Erta Ale (which is near to Eritrea) we had army guards joining our expedition. The Land Cruiser has always been the best choice where ever I have been so far. But in your case, how much did it really cost to import and register it in NL .. with NL's awesome tax regulations ..?!?
Hahaha, The Netherlands is horrible when it comes to importing cars.. So, fortunately, the import cost was very limited due to its age. A younger car would've cost us a small fortune though. Paying insurance and the monthly road tax is a whole different story :) That'll set you back a couple of hundred euros a month
