Love this; I also found that by recording myself and watching it afterwards that I make a lot of faces which don't necessarily come from a negative place but have the tendency of coming off as negative to those who don't know me. Knowing that, I was able to forewarn folks that I work with and forewarn my students that "Hey, I make faces when I think, it's not necessarily a reflection of negativity, I'm just thinking and it's my thinking face!" and that has helped a lot with misunderstanding.

That's such a good example! Our "resting" face a lot of the times look more negative than we expect them to. I realized that for me too when I film my work with me videos. Haha I didn't know I looked so serious when I was generally in a good mood! Love your anecdote and hopefully others can draw from your experience too :) Thank you for watching!

Gosh the first point I sometimes find myself cross eyed!
I think I unconsciously do most of these especially if I’m engaged but now I can apply method to my accidents to come across well all the time on virtual meetings thank.

Wow amazing tips as always Vicky! The social signals are really interesting. Now that you say it it makes sense, confidence is a social thing. Will try to be brave and use the strategic pause too

Thanks for this Vicky! Came at a great time to share with friends. I constantly move people around my Zoom window so that the speaker is just under the camera.

Absolutely love these tips! I never thought about my posture, using people's name, & hand gestures, but I totally see how that can contribute to capturing and maintaining other's attention virtually. And also show confidence! Now off topic Vicky, I wanted to let you know I still play your Work From Home With Me videos & they have truly helped me stay more productive. They also give me a sense of not feeling alone while working from home. I get a little work buddy! Hope to see more of those videos soon as well!

Vancouver looks so nice this time of year.
Nothing worse than being exposed on a point you're not prepared for in an important meeting. What's really difficult is when you've got tens of direct reports, each of whom requires your input and knowledge into their project areas, and having to have enough, down in the weeds knowledge their projects to speak to it when called to the carpet by your boss or by the vendor or client. When I 1st started at this role, managing electrical coordinator of a large engineering firm on a $3B steel plant project, it felt like failing an important exam, every single day.

I m so gonna implement every suggestion u gave in my zoom lectures next semester.
I have a question: in a super large class (70-100 students), what is your view on "cam on/off" policy? Compulsory cam on can feel autocrat, Optional almost always become All off, and discouraging.

Shouldn't the title be "online meetings" and not just "zoom meetings"?

  • @davidryan4142

These may work for most people, however not for me. I dont have trouble focusing on someone, even if the topic is boring, as I imagine that could be me. I pay attention out of respect for the time and effort that person has put into the presentation. Also, I find the hand gestures distracting and once you know they are used to keep people's attention, it feels like you are being treated as a child. The only thing I dont like about online meetings, is when people dont dress properly or eat food. Even you are broadcasting from home, you should still dress for the occasion out of respect for others. We are adults and should act like it. Respect others and they will respect you (hopefully).
