This was the clearest and most useful explanation of Zettelkasten I have come across! The way you layed out the difference between Fleeting, Literature and Permanent notes was just so well done. Thank you!
After going back to school , I realized as an older learning my brain is different. This all seems so much more effective. As well I sit on a school board, and the constant struggle to find the missing piece that the children are having to take their learning to the level of true knowledge. I feel like we are not teaching children how to learn this is eye opening to me. ThNks!
I wish I knew this when I was in school. And turns out Zettelkasten helps facilitate taking info from working memory to long term memory! I’m making a video on that too.. this really changed everything for me!! Thank you for watching :)
I just found Zettelkasten... an hour ago. It spoke to me as I loose ideas and the reference stuff in random notebooks. I am a spatial thinker like you. It stopped me from having a youtube channel as I get overwhelmed. And loose the teachings. I am following as a beginner. 😊 thank you!!
My study notes while watching this video are 'literature' notes. My ideas for my own applications of this system are 'fleeting' notes. Now I move on to a review of both to make 'permanent' notes for my use going forward. Thanks for such a great overview of zettelkasten.
Wow! I was wondering why this system seemed so much better for my Autistic brain than other methods. Then, you mentioned how this isn't top down organization! In general, people with ASD tend to understand the world in a bottom-up manner, making this so well suited for folks like me. 🔥
Recently discovered your channel and I'm a fan! I've started thinking in frameworks as a designer and one thing I struggle with is note taking and seeing this method has really opened my eyes! Can't wait to try to build this habit.
I.M. Pei said "you must simplify, you must make the complex simple and then make it work" - you did the first part - I have to do the second. Thank you so much.
Just starting to get into Zettelkasten. I liked that you explained the original method in its own video, and not suggest people follow a specific implementation of the method right from the get-go. Thank you!
Thank you for this on-ramp. I actually have captured many literature notes & fleeting notes, but never had a clear workflow for using them as inputs for permanent notes. I am going to start this with obsidian by capturing a liturature note referencing this video. This method gives me guidance for cultivating my knowledge base.
I just started this Second Brain/ Zettelkasten method a few days ago. I finished reading Building a Second Brain and am in the middle of reading “How to Take Smart Notes”. I keep getting stuck on the organization. I’m trying to imagine how Luhmann “connected” is notes. It sounds like a MESS?? Wouldn’t he have thousands upon thousands of notes in random orders?? If you have so many notes how can you remember all your ideas and remember what connects with what? I think that’s where I’m stuck. I KNOW this method is going to change my life, I can feel it, but I’m so used to organizing things in categories; folders within folders, that my brain is struggling to let go 😭😭😭 I’m so close!!! 😩
IDK if you've already solved this method, but for me (I'm using Obsidian) all my zettlekasten notes go into a personal notes folder. Where I focus my organization is on tags (both meta and in-note). To me tags are more important as they show representational connections that I can see from searching or from the graph view. Also, my Zettlekasten notes act as a resource for me to compose larger works, such as compendiums or essays. Those have their own folders that are separate. Then if you happen to be working on your own theories then I would suggest you use those in projects and then move them out to a folder for "completed" theories or systems of thought. You really can mix both and have a robust system. If you have any more questions just let me know.
Thank you for this video. Have been trying to get my mind around this method, finding it difficult, but you've given me a handle on it. Thank you for being so clear.
I really enjoyed your video. It was very clear and detailed. The Zettelkasten Method is new to me. I am a 63 yr old woman! How did I not know about this before now? I have always been a note taker but I throw stuff away after a time. Just think of all the thinking I have done and tossed . . . what a waste of knowledge and time. I am hoping to make use of this now. I have so much I want to know and remember. This just sounds like a great method. Thank you for your helpful video.
oooooooooh. I studied cultural studies in Germany, and read my fair share of Luhman.. And no one EVER talked about this brilliant concept!! I am shook in the best way. A little detour in my life took me away from computers for 6 years. Now I am back and feel like a time traveller, whos wildest dreams of applications came true. Will jump into the obsidian setup right now. That's how I found you! Thank you so much for your precise and structured knowledge. For my ADHD/highly gifted brain it is balm!
This video came just in time! I just recently started with my zettelkasten but still struggle a bit with how to organize and link my notes. Your video was clear and easy to understand! Looking forward for the digitizing the notes video!
Having working with several famous and talented instructors in the past, I've gotta say your really got the skills to teach. Your content is great. Very well explained, easy to follow along! Thanks for sharing your ideas
Thank you, Vicky!! I've slogged through several videos on Zettelkasten and this video is, by far, the easiest to understand without oversimplifying things. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. ❤
This is a great explanation. I wish i had a system like this when i was taking courses. The connections is the part that i needed. I will try this. For the number system i am being creative. For income tax studies i am referencing by line # on the rax return. Several lines connect together along with forms. For accounting i am starting with the general account number for example sales 4000. Then i build from that. Thank you for this explantion
Instead of using 4000 as sales I would put it as income then references all the income types under it. So the main elements of the financial statements are where I start example assets liabilities equity income and expenses
I am really appreciating your videos, Vicky! I am creating a series of 6 courses and your tutorials on Zettelkasten & Obsidian are very helpful. Thank you!
I watched some videos about how to implement Zettalkaste Method on Obsidian an this video I finally got it the idea more clearly! Specially in this part 6:41 Thank you so much Vicky! Now I know how to start ☺
You articulated thoughts perfectly! This is my second of you videos I have watched and I am hook, and looking forward to the journey through the rest of them.
I've watched tens of videos on RUclips trying to understand the Zettelkasten system. This is the first video that makes sense. Thank you. I've subscribed to your channel.

SUCH an Amazing Video! Thank You Vicky for this! I had become SO Frustrated with others’ mere _Attempts_ at helping me arrive at the Crux of the Value of Zettelkasten, and you state it with such Grace & Clarity that it seemed simply natural. Such a Gift!
Great video. The most important productivity thing that I have ever learned was to get things out of my head and into a system I trust so I can stop worrying about what I am not doing right now. That frees up your mind for creativity.
Liked and subscribed. You are extremely talented at breaking down complicated ideas and explaining them clearly and concisely. Thank you very much for this phenomenal explanation- It was exactly what I was looking for and I am very excited to have found your channel!
Beginner/novice here. I started about a week and a half ago. My Zettelkasten is tiny right now and I am doing my best to number things. (Analog version) Then I discovered Obsidian and I cannot decide whether to keep going analog or just go full-on digital. Will have to watch more of YOUR videos to help me decide!
Much thanks for all of your content on Zettelkasten and Obsidian! This is going to be game changing. All else is on pause while i consume and implement the ideas on your channel!
What a great video!!! I only recently heard of Zettelkasten and it sounds like it could potential be what I've been needing and searching for to bring cohesion to all my ideas and research. So far, this is the clearest explanation I've come across. In fact, I almost abandoned the whole idea as I was starting to think Zettelkasten is too complicated. Thank you sooo much for making this video and for explaining the three types of notes. Brilliant production! I will definitely like and subscribe!
I am so glad I found your channel! I have loved the idea of the Zettelkasten method since I learned of it about a year and a half ago, but even after watching every video I could find on it, and reading through the Reddit and blogs about it, I was still SO confused. I am about to re-watch this video just so that I can take notes on it and I truly can't thank you enough for explaining this so clearly! This is going to make it so much easier for me to stop putting my thoughts in 78 notebooks, pieces of paper, phone notes, notepad, Word, and Google documents 😅
Thank you so much for the explanation! You've been the most helpful resource on my journey into this so far and it's much appreciated. If only I had known about this during my engineering degree, I might have been able to save myself from all of the late nights and general panic
Hey Garrett! Thanks for watching and I’m totally with you on Zettelkasten’s potential for improving the quality of uni life 😂 more people need to hear about this!! Thank you for watching 🙏 and see you around the channel!!
This is the best video on Zettelkasten that I've seen, and I've watched a LOT of them, trying to connect what I could tell is an incredible system to ME and how I could use it. I feel like you provided some missing piece that let all the info from other videos fall into place. I finally feel like I understand how and why I would implement this method - even though you seem to use it for topics/output that differs from my interests! I let YT autoplay me a couple more of your videos and I felt the same way about your Obsidian video. Thanks so much for this info!
Wow thank you Kellie for saying this!! What you said is exactly what I wanted to get across 🙏 so glad the videos resonated and hopefully I'll see you around :D
Am seeing this after watching another video delivered at the Royal Institution on the topic of Category theory. I can't help but marvel at the uncanny parallels between Zettelkasten and category theory.
Thank you so much Vicky! I usually note stuff down on Google notes..but they were mixed up as fleeting and literature. I now want to actually make permanent notes out of those to duel my creativity as you said to be able to understand and convey . This is an excellent method and now that I have a lot of notes-- I am definitely going to follow this and link everything categorically to come up with permanent notes:)
for me is very important the chronology of ideas, because it reminds me the big picture or the starting point, sometimes iterate over one specific point in time to rebuild specific tree of ideas, and see if the result is complementary, or another new
I stumbled across this video hoping to find a new note-taking system, but it turns out I’m already using a similar approach with field notes and a bullet journal. Excited to see if there’s anything here to add to my setup!
Reference for later: There are three types of notes 1. Fleeting 2. Literature 3. Permanent There are two boxes: 1. Reference 2. Ideas Fleeting and literature notes go in the reference box. Permanent notes go in the ideas box. Literature notes are connected by topic. Fleeting notes are unorganized but become permanent if the idea is good.
I found out about Zettelkasten through a Reddit comment, looked it up on RUclips and found your videos. Kind of eye-opening because I've been wondering for a while how I could better keep my notes and thoughts together. There's too much friction for me to capture small things and I don't have an even halfway decent system to connect anything either. I also hate the restrictions and ambiguity that folders or manual categories create. This method might solve all of those issues. Huge thanks for making these, they're really good!
If I understood it correctly, 1st rule of Literature notes is "creating small and specificnotes" right? Or is it's detail version, explain everything you can. Please get rid of this confusions 2:20
Hi Vicky, for the first time came across this term Zettelkasten in Quora. Had searched a lot on YT abt how to make and file notes. So immediately searched YT again for Zettelkasten and yr video came up. Thanks so much... Over years I hv made so many notes on several topics but just didn't know how to put it together in a way I can refer again and then co-relate for better understanding and then make permanent notes. Most of my stuff is fleeting and consuming content. I am so glad I found you and I really want toearn this method to organize my notes. Like & subscribed. All the best👍
Hey V K! Thanks for sharing this! I’m so glad you found this helpful and hopefully I can provide some more helpful videos going forward ☺️ thank you for watching and for the encouragement!!
this is an amazing video and helped me a lot because our crative processes are much more bottom up rather than the other way around! thank you for this excelent content!
This is a great presentation. I first heard of this method 35 years ago from Barbara Tuchman the Historian. I taught the notes in a shoe box method in my 11 grade English class when we were writing term papers. all notes would go into a shoe box or bag and then I had them spread them out on the floor into different piles according to the associations they had made while researching. I'm going to look into Obsidian. Thank you!
Very good video, you have a clear communication voice. I stumbled upon this video as I was watching a video by Ryan Holiday which talk about Roberts Greenes system of note taking. Which lead me to more research which lead me to here. Of three videos on Zettelkasten yours matched my thinking! Well done cheers from Vancouver Island Canada.
It's always been so frustrating for me to organize my thoughts and notes, i become overwhelmed. I liked this system, it's simpler than what I'm already doing. Thankyou so much for sharing ❤
Excellent video! You've made this amazing system *much* clearer to me! I wish I had a digital way to use this system 45 yrs ago when I was in graduate school!
New sub! Thank you, Vicky. I stumbled upon Zettelkasten a couple of years ago, but I wasn't able to follow some of the other introductions on RUclips. Your explanation made it all "click" for me; we are both spatial thinkers, so maybe your communication style was what I needed!
Thank you for watching Adrian! I was in the same boat as you and was very determined to make it simple (as ZK is supposed to be simple) haha so thank you!!!
I think this is the best intro to Zettlelkasten I came across, and it beats Ahrens'. Thank you! I am a spatial thinker, and your three boxes idea just solved me a lot of, err, thinking about systems ;-)
Obligatory comment for the algorithm gods! Stumbled across your content while searching for ways to better myself. I've never heard of Zettlekasten before and am excited to see if it works for me!
Really enjoyed this video. Just recently heard about the Zettelkasten. I am at an in between phase right now between digital and analog. I love writing but i also like to digitize things as well for a back up. Nothing with both imo... but end of the day pen to paper is my go to. I use index cards regularly for note taking through the day and either copy it into my commonplace, or into my Obsidian. So I am looking forward to fan boying through some of your videos.. Thank You So much. Zettelkasten just feels a like a lot but you explained simply with the 3 steps. By far one of my favorite introductions to the matter.
I love that - the transferring between analog and digital can also be a form of processing the information. So happy to meet another analog x digital notetaker :)
@@VickyZhaoBEEAMP yea I noticed with the notecards, that I really have to compress to fit most of what i want on the card. And also applying the Will it Make Sense in 60 Days approach as well. Been learning a little about Buddhism and Stoicism to unwind at the end of the day. Kind of like a Note Taking Meditation. Really enjoy your videos and content and thanks for the response!
Great video, your explanation clears certain things up. The fact that you think it is easy because it only has three parts is something I had not heard before. This makes me want to try it now. ;))
Your video is the clearest and easiest to understand amongst the few dozens in RUclips. Congratulations

I've watched a lot of videos on the subject and this one is the best. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, you're great at it!
Thank you Akio 🙏🙏 this means the world to me!! Thank you for watching 👀
Vicky Zhao -- Never stop the good work you are doing. You're osm!
Reference for later:
There are three types of notes
1. Fleeting
2. Literature
3. Permanent
There are two boxes:
1. Reference
2. Ideas
Fleeting and literature notes go in the reference box.
Very nice video. I just heard about this Zettelkasten a couple of days ago and am fascinated. I wish that I had known about this a long time ago.
I love your clear explanations
this is an amazing video and helped me a lot because our crative processes are much more bottom up rather than the other way around! thank you for this excelent content!
Thank you!
i found obsidian and now your helpful videos. excited to get going, thanks
Thank you for making the concept so understandable and I am in my fencing level.
Vicky, I really appreciate your content and your presentation style. Wishing you all the best!
Thank you!!! Really appreciate it 🙏
Very good video, you have a clear communication voice.
Thank you James! Glad you liked the video. I definitely wished I knew this in grad school (maybe even high school LOL)
Just getting into Zettelkasten and using it to produce content! This was a great intro video!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for checking it out!
Omg I finally understood zettelkasten thanks to your video! I was so freaking confused for so long, thank you so much!
Thank you very much for watching and for sharing this with me 🙏
New sub! Thank you, Vicky. I stumbled upon Zettelkasten a couple of years ago, but I wasn't able to follow some of the other introductions on RUclips. Your explanation made it all "click" for me; we are both spatial thinkers, so maybe your communication style was what I needed!
Hey Ben!! So glad this clicked and thank you for sharing this with me 🙏 keep me posted on how you go with the method!
Your approach is the only one that made me understand this system. Thank you for your efforts, I apreciate it.
Thank you for watching Adrian! I was in the same boat as you and was very determined to make it simple (as ZK is supposed to be simple) haha so thank you!!!
Thank you for a clear, concise, well-structured overview!
Thank you for watching!!!
Yup. Best video on Zettelkasten ever
🙏🫣 thank you for watching!!!
This is life changing thank you. Glad I found out about this early in life
lucky! The things you’ll do :) keep me posted
Thank you! You have this gift of making the complex simple.
I think this is the best intro to Zettlelkasten I came across, and it beats Ahrens'. Thank you! I am a spatial thinker, and your three boxes idea just solved me a lot of, err, thinking about systems ;-)
thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad to hear that the three boxes idea resonated with you! Happy to help!:)
well explained. gonna give the digital zettelkasten a try in sm
Glad you liked this and let me know how it goes!
This video explains everything in a very simple way. Thanks for making this video.
Thank you for watching Aman 🙏 that was exactly my goal for making this video so yay!!
Obligatory comment for the algorithm gods! Stumbled across your content while searching for ways to better myself. I've never heard of Zettlekasten before and am excited to see if it works for me!
Many thanks for this. A very helpful introduction.
This makes me want to try it now. ;))
Haha yes, please try it and let me know what you think!! Why make it complex for ourselves when it's just 3 parts 🙃 hehe thank you for watching!
