Finally, a video on zettelkasten and Obsidian that I understand. Thanks a million! You’re explanation on not starting from scratch makes it clear how amazing it is. 🎉
I literally finish your "Mastering Obsidian" series yesterday after one week of intensive use. The natural step for me was to search for Zettelkasten books and references. I couldn't believe when I saw the notification of this video being uploaded exactly when needed. As a teacher myself, I can confidently share that you are an excellent disseminator. Thank you for the smart & hard work.
I was searching all over for some kind of high quality series that taught me Obsidian after I moved from Roam to Obsidian. I couldn't find anything. I'm glad that Mastering Obsidian is a free series. I'm going to devour it over the next few weeks.

Really valuable again - thanks a lot! :-) I tend to use "literatur notes" also for a starting point to make meaning for me - like not only making a permanent note of the concept, but also making me think like: "How can I apply this to my life?" - "What does that remind me of?" - "How do I feel about this and why?" - "Is this in alignement or in contradiction with what I already know and how?" - stuff like that. So that I can get meaning out of what I consumed - and then created.
"...one of such tools is Obsidian, which I've been using for nearly three years. But if you use something else, that's fine, as long as you can link to different notes. Also, bear in mind that this is just the way I do it. It's not the only way, and it might not even be the best way. Because the best way is whatever works for you." Liked, Subscribed
I'm sure there's much more to Zettlekasten. But I feel like this is enough. Gave me a solid ahah! moment where I can see exactly how the whole system works. Thanks!
This video appeared just at the right time I am contemplating with my literature and references notes. Can I hope that you will made a walkthrough video how you turn your reference notes into literature notes and then into a permanent notes??? I can't wait for it 😊
Thanks so much for this video as well as all the rest of them! You've really helped me get started with the whole Obsidian/Zettelkasten journey, so thank you, thank you for creating all the content you do!
Watching your videos even multiple times is beneficial . thank you for the complete and yet simple explanation of the zettelkasten system , also thanks for the great insight you provided us about the atomic habits (multitasking myth) .
Such a concise and insightful breakdown with the mix of conceptual teaching and showcasing your own personal practices to help others get started with their own zettelkasten notes. I'm going to add it to my email course until I document my own workflow 😅
I just wanted to say thanks Sergio - I've just discovered Obsidian as well as the Zettelkasten method, and it's what I've been looking for all this time. This video in particular has helped me to apply practically. One question: What's the best way to (1) surface / connect multiple permanent notes and (2) establish some form of hierarchy when you have information with varying granularity? (eg. A broad concept / philosophy vs its practical applications vs context-specific implications)
Great video as always. You mentioned that you want your permanent notes to be short and have one idea, which what I have been trying to do myself but can not seem to make it work. For example I am learning about deep learning right now, so I have a deep learning note which I find impossible to shorten, since it explains what deep learning is and expands on it by mentioning concepts, algorithms and else. How would you go about making shorter and more concise notes?
Then don't shorten it. It has to work for you, first and foremost. If you do want to shorten it and have a lot of thoughts on Deep Learning you could turn it into a MOC, I have a video on it as well. It would essentially be an index note to all of your shorter and more concise notes on deep learning. Hope that helps!
I have so much to say I don't know where should I start.. First of all, as someone who's seen every video on your channel and many of them, multiple times, this one stands out significantly in terms of production and quality. Your energy was GREAT, I felt a lot of confidence in your words and its clear you know what you're talking about. Great work!!! Regarding your point here - I had neglected my previous 3 years PKM system (I also started with Obsidian 3 years ago) and your previous video (regarding Reader/Readwise) was the final piece I needed to reconstruct my PKM system. I also use Todoist (and now also mymind) to quick capture, mymind for "bookmarking the world", Todoist for making ideas into actionable items DURING capturing (I also have a sophisticated scheme there that helps with that), and now with all of my highlights synced YESTERDAY I have decided to move forward and attempt create content online and have started thinking about publishing content I make using EXACTLY the method you mention, having the idea built step by step naturally over time so when I get to content-making, I already have many pieces of the work ready and linked for me to focus on. You made my day. P.S Beeper is a game changer 🤯
I have actually been reviewing Obsidian Publish, Medium, Substack, Twitter/X and LinkedIn and I've decided to go with LinkedIn+Twitter/X for starts. That was my original goal (Publishing articles) 3 years ago and yesterday I made the first step into writing (making the MOC link an actual file haha). Feels awesome and on point with your video.
Oh Tomer thank you so much! I put more effort in the production of this one than any other video I've made, but I didn't think anyone would notice! Glad I made your day because you made mine! It's awesome that you're creating content! Feel free to share so that I can follow as well :) Glad you liked beeper too :)
The only thing I struggle with Zettelkasten is writing short and concise notes. For example, if I have some critiques about a technique for doing X, I'll create a note called "Critiques on Doing X with Y". Most often then not I'll write up to 10 points with through explanation on why I think the way I think. I try to break them up but simply can't find a way I feel satisfied...
1. Rank the notes by which ones you think are best, and cut off the last few until you are left with 5-7 takeaways that are the most impactful 2. These 5-7 takeaways can each be individual notes, with just a paragraph or two explaining them.
8:20 Thanks. Awesome summary. Would have been nice if you could have shown an example of a permanent note, as you did show examples of your literatuire notes. Just for us to get an idea of what this "atomic", "short & concise" can look like.
Are you able to make a video on the process you use to create “reference notes”. I like the concept but I’m not sure on how to go about applying it myself.
Hey, thanks for this great video! I am curious, how do you delete or clean out previous reference notes? The ReadWise references is piling up to a huge, overwhelming list of notes, and i was curious if you had thoughts on managing those? Thanks again.
Hey, thanks for the great video! I wanted to ask you how you then approach the division between large topic and atomic ideas within it. Because I'm sure that after consuming all that content (and generating own thoughts about it), you have a lot more to say than a screen's space worth on the multitasking-myth, which various subtopics inside that one. However, only if you have that one big bucket do you get the visual benefit of the graph links pointing you towards writing that permanent note. On the other hand, I totally agree with the atomic idea note philosophy - have always done it that way. So how do you approach that to merge the two - big bucket links' gravity pull and atomicity of single ideas? Thanks!
Hi Sergio. In 8:58, what do you mean by "have at least one link in each permanent note"? What links are you referring to? Can you elaborate more on this? Thank you for your useful note-taking system.
Saying that highlighting takes "no effort" is too extreme of a view. Yes it's significantly less effort and return, but consider the alternative of not highlighting anything, or not even reading, _that_ is "no effort". I feel like the use of extremes here is divisive and could be instead frame as a positive to encourage people to take the next step in their note taking efforts.
The video is great, tho I have a question. What are the guidelines that you follow in order to include/not include reference notes in your vault? I am asking this from a noise/clutter management perspective. For example: I use readwise (and readwise reader) but if I were to include all of the highlights from everything I read within my vault my own notes would be overwhelmed by a huge number of reference notes that have little value to my thought. what is your take on this? You do just import everything you highlight or have some selection criteria (only books or something like that). Keep up the great content!
I'm 33% into the book and starting to doubt if this suits someone not making research papers? Like, i just want to learn lots of different things more efficiently. Things that interest me like hobbies. Does zettel make sense for that?
it's just the most hyped management system. you can look for alternatives or give zettel a go. sometimes sticking to one solution is more efficient that constant search without doing. answering your question: first you try, then you decide whether it's relevant.
I have a couple of questions: 1. Is there any way to sync with the file that Google Play Books generates with the Highlights in my Drive? 2. How do you connect your "literary notes" note with a section of your "reference notes" note? I see you have a "^0863a" and a "[...|reference]" in the edit mode. What is it? Thanks a lot! I just started with Obsidian and your videos are a big help!
Thank you, I really appreciate your work. I have been using the same approach for literature notes in emacs' org-mode and when I switched to Obsidian I found one thing that made it a bit better (for me) - instead a link to block of text with quote I use collapsed callout with embedded block of text. That helps me to lookup the original without leaving literature note.
He replied to the same question later in the thread "It's built into obsidian. I'm on the insider build, but it's either available already or very soon for everyone!"

Working through your Mastering Obsidian videos and it's been incredibly useful so far! Thanks for making it easier to jump into my PKM journey. I tried finding the template that you provided in your video on Automating folders but the site is not working. Is there a different page I should be looking at?
I recommend putting Zettelkasten method into the title, because I searched for it on the other day, but did not find your video, however you clearly describe the method in fact in a good way. I stumbled upon your video by chance days after I searched for the topic :) Otherwise, great video!
The Zettelkasten system can feel cumbersome and overwhelming for note-taking, especially when reading books. It often seems like more time is spent organizing notes than actually engaging with the content. With the ease of accessing information online in just 10-15 minutes, and the growing capabilities of AI to summarize knowledge, the need for such a detailed system is questionable. For those not regularly writing papers or books, a knowledge management system may take more time than it offers in future benefits.
I think that this system would be to complicated (for me) and I would worry that I’d spend to much time inside the notes app tending to my notes instead of writing my own things
If Permanent Notes are concepts and ideas independent of their original context, then how come there is linkage in the permanent notes while the channel said he put at least one link in the permanent notes🤔 linkage to literature notes? 🤔
I believe it is to be understood: the permanent notes should be *presented* independent of context. But linkages are still free to exist in any note. A link to the concept of multi-tasking can be used for you to follow that path if you want to dig into it, but may assume that if you're reading the permanent note, you don't necessarily have to follow the link to understand it. It's connected because it can be, but thinking of it as if it were on an index card, you can just read the text plainly and the linkage doesn't really need to connect for your understanding.

They should be simple enough so that they can be understood by such an audience, and then provide the breadcrumbs to go into more detail should you wish. How do you think that being able to communicate complex subjects in a simple way is useless?
It's more as if you ARE apart of that audience. Imagine you want to go back to a note maybe months or years after you've written it, but you do not understand the content because you didn't make it coherent enough. That means that when you write a permanent note, you make it in a way that is understandable to you/understandable to someone who is a beginner in the topic you're making a note of.
Pretty annoying to spend 9 minutes looking at you talking to the camera and hardly any time actually looking at Obsidian. You offered almost no explanation on how the different types of notes are organized and didn’t even give an example of what your permanent note says about multitasking.
Amazing video, really like your implementation. Would you be sharing your templates Sergio? Part 2 would be greatly appreciated with more in depth walk trhough

Thanku, this is a great system. Is there a way to write hand written notes in readwise reader while i'm highlighting that will sync in obsidian?

You still didn’t show exactly how the linking process works!
I think that this system would be to complicated (for me) and I would worry that I’d spend to much time inside the notes app tending to my notes instead of writing my own things
If Permanent Notes are concepts and ideas independent of their original context, then how come there is linkage in the permanent notes while the channel said he put at least one link in the permanent notes🤔
linkage to literature notes?
Hi, non english native speaker:
1. What means takeaway as a concept? I tried to relate with reading and get nothing.
it means the conclusion you ultimately get from reading. it's what you think is most important to remember.
Danke!🙂
Thank you so much! :)
this is workflow?

hi, you pronounce Mihály like saying the words "me" and "hi"
Csíkszentmihályi is kinda like "cheek sent me hi e"
Thanks for letting me know! I realized I mispronounced it while I was editing this one :(
No worries it's a hard name! Great video btw! Love your channel
Permanent notes sound pretty useless if they’re “directed towards an audience ignorant of the thoughts behind the text” aka out of context.
Emacs org-mode is superior tbh, and extensible through packages. Whilst obsidian isn't FOSS.

Amazing video, really like your implementation. Would you be sharing your templates Sergio? Part 2 would be greatly appreciated with more in depth walk trhough
