Here in Canada we had a football team called the Edmonton Eskimos. The Organization had asked Inuit people in surveys how they felt with the name and most didn't care, their response was "we're dying here with high suicide, high rates of alcoholism, constant boil water advisories and the insane cost of living, we don't care about a stupid name" and white people continued to cry rivers about it until the org caved and renamed to the Elks.
And the Inuit still barely have clean drinking water.

They think that they're saviors. They believe that they're saving less-fortunate people from ridicule and oppression (and even that the former supports and fuels the latter), and that doing this makes them a good person. The feeling that you might get if you saved an innocent kitten from a house fire, they get from doing this.
People used to call this "virtue signaling," but I think that that description gets the issue wrong, because it's not performative for them. It's their genuine motivation to fill this "savior" role.
If you do something often enough, and that particular method or pattern is successful, then your body gives you dopamine from it, and it rewires your brain to prioritize that particular method in order to get more dopamine, because your body knows that it works.
So for a lot of them, the urge to be a savior has become their entire motivational system. No matter how dumb or tenuous or useless or historically-illiterate the cause. They don't care about those details, because their brain doesn't reward them for that.

The massive corporation won't notice or care that you're gone. And every other fan who's paying even slightly less attention than you will just see that there is less and less protest these days, less remains of the way that things used to be, and there's more and more of the new progressive flavor to everything. To them, that will just become "the new normal."
If you care about something, gatekeep it. Or it will be changed from the thing that you used to love.

As a fan of the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins, I can attest that the name change has certainly been a positive to this current 2-6 team.
So glad Dan Snyder, an impeccable NFL owner, has had that change of heart and that all those amazing partners like FedEx that had been associated with the Redskins and never made a peep before, finally nudged Dan in the right direction.
