It is great on a road trip. It maps out chargers and preconditions the battery if needed. There's also manual preconditioning if you aren't using the in car nav to find a charger for whatever reason.
I had a 2021 model Pro S. Great looks and very usable and comfortable interior. Took it on a 1600 mile road trip. It was comfortable and quiet. The day-to-day thought was infuriating. I didn't find out until too late, no heat pump in the US, only Canada (very small print). Winter range was 180-190 miles.

One pedal is a feature that some auto makers think is a bad idea. I agree with them. Why do reviewers always act like it’s a a given that cars should have it? It makes generally for more car sickness in passengers and generally reduces range over intentional regen through the brake pedal.
Early EVs had the feature and some people expect it and like having it. Some newer EVs have done away it to make it easier for people to transition. Since its software, it'd be nice to have the option to turn it on or off if you want it.
Having stared with a dislike for one pedal driving in my Niro EV I now love it. Easier to simply brake and intuitively regen. The car sickness suggestion makes no sense as you would brake anyway.

With just about 1 month having it at home we have taken it to the dealership to be told they didn’t find anything wrong on it. In terms of the car we really like it, but I think software is the main problem here
This seems greatly improved but I won’t consider it without a heat pump and the capacitive buttons, stupid window controls and lack of knobs are a big turn off.
@@GeeDeeBird I’m in the US and VW decided to not offer it here in spite of offering it in Europe. I happen to live in the perfect climate for a heat pump and they are fairly common in EVs so I see no reason to do without. Ford Mach E also has no heat pump.
The heat pump is really just some extra percent of range during the cooler months, when people mostly don't go on long road trips anyway. You won't save money with a heat pump due to the added car price. Get a car with higher capacity battery and/or use smaller wheels if you really need long winter range, and get the bonus of better range all year.
ID4 is better than most in terms of pricing and options imo. I take it over model Y for ride comfort and quality. Also take it over Ariya due to bigger cargo space, i would also take it over a Mach e due to ride comfort and pricing. I would take it over EV6 and Ioniq 5 or 6 due to ride height and ground clearance. Overall its a more balanced vehicle with a better value and price than many others in this segment. And the led lens, headlights and tail lights with light up logo at front and rear with light bars makes this car more unique than many EVs especially those ugly Model Ys😂. I think Nissan Ariya ans Benz EVs are the only other ones with light up badges
Always been interested in the iD4 when it came out, but the reviews and the issues I have read made me think other wise. When it comes to EVs, I am looking more at City EV cars in which the battery is between 42kWh to 44 kWh for daily commuting and going on errands around the city or town.
I am complaining about a bait and switch. Who’s the guy with the flowing locks in the thumbnail? lol. Glad to hear that the ID4 is less disappointing. I kid VW. Good job.
I must be the only owner that thinks the window switches are a great Idea. I had a 5 series previous and I dont know how many times I pulled up to the drive through and opened the rear window by mistake.
Based on comments we’ve received, you aren’t the only owner who likes the switches. We can see some advantages in situations like you describe. We just haven’t been won over yet.
You didn't talk about the annoying turn signal noise! That, along with the EXTREMELY confusing trim levels that seemed to prioritize nickel-and-diming you for small upgrades (such as power seats). These two things turned me off of the ID.4 and I ended up going with the Kona electric Limited. I don't get the tax credit, but I also don't want to break my car because of the incessant *click-click* of the turn signal.
Unlike nearly all the vehicles in its category (sans the Model Y), you can get it with a proper tow hitch, decent tow rating (2,700lbs) and a 7-pin connector! Can't get that on a MachE or Ioniq5. With the updates, it's made it back onto my short list. But the lack of 1-pedal driving? like, WTF? Why not? I'd like a frunk, but can live without it. will it get access to NACS?
I own a '23 Pro, and the grumbling about the infotainment is a bit much. You get the hang of it very quickly. The weakest point is the "ID system" for media controls and VW's nav (which isn't great), but if you use Android Auto or Car Play, you won't be using the ID system much. Plus, they gave me a ridiculous deal on mine, which includes 3 years' free charging at EA stations. I'd love the bigger HP in the '24, but the '23 dual motor is every bit as quick as my old car - a '21 Jetta GLI. That's plenty quick enough.
2 things: a) Didn't know there was ever a Windows based phone, but I've never owned anything Windows based so there you go. 2) Digging the Italian style "arms out" driving position you chose.
Seriously didn't know how to put on seat belt? Didnt list what you didn't like before thats suddenly so much better. Prior RWD long range has the same range as the 2024 AWD, so I don't see why that wasn't sufficient before but suddenly is now.
WTAF??!!? Deciding to put on his belt before taking it for a test drive... he connected the driver's seatbelt to the passenger seat locking mechanism. (huh??!!?) Somewhere in that car there is a safety sensing computer module that just tried to divide by zero.
Heat pump, fold flat seats, and physical buttons! You aren't selling an minimalist art display, you're selling a vehicle that people will use and abuse.
I get the ask for physical buttons, but I have the impression that those are gone forever, look at Tesla, they do have no buttons, everything is on this touch display in the middle of the console. For me, the mix of touch display and touch buttons is a good alternative, but it is just me.
@@cmdrstevemcmaru7417 agreed The touch display is nice for many things, but keeping the basic HVAC and other commonly used controls real buttons is so much better imo. I've been driving a relative's Tesla for the last two weeks, and I really wish it had some real buttons.
I have a 23 ID.4 AWD ProS and a Lightning. Previously had a Model 3 and Model Y at different times. Honestly, despite these updates... avoid it like crazy. It's very comfortable and quiet, great build quality... more than either Tesla ever was (pre-update to M3). So many quirks... windshield has glass that looks warped and will give you motion sickness. Terrible infotainment. I knew this going in and didnt think I'd mind using CarPlay usually but you'll need to use it occassionally and its awful. Car turns off the second it senses you leave the driver seat. Good luck keeping climate control on for your partner, kids, pet, etc. while you run inside for an errand. Depreciation is off the charts - worse car i've had in that aspect. Tires are 2 sizes and cost a fortune. Brakes squeak like they are going out, VW service tells me they dont have ceramic pre EPA restrictions on VW and there is no factory service remedy. Weird. Could go on and on, just dont.
All well and good. One of the biggest reasons why people, in general, are not purchasing EVs is due to the high price, yet EV reviews here on RUclips keep pushing at us the highest priced model. Can you focus on the reasonably priced model rather than the ridiculously higher priced models with all the superfluous extras.
We don't intentionally push you to the highest priced model. Review vehicles are supplied by the manufacturer (this is common industry practice, there's only like one publication that can afford to and then actually purchase every vehicle it reviews), and manufacturers will typically put higher-spec'd models in the media fleets. Sometimes there'll be a mid-grade or volume model made available, but it's not the norm. This is the same for magazine, print, and website reviews along with RUclips. The advantage to many of these EVs is being techy-focused to begin with, even the entry-level models have a lot of standard features, which Craig mentions is a good deal in his conclusions at the end of the video.
@@EVPulse I understand, but it’s really not helping to generate needed sales. They obviously want people to purchase their higher priced models forcing them Into an unaffordable debt.
I loved my early Windows Phones, especially the cyan Lumia 920. It was beautiful, ran soooooo smoothly and was built like a tank. The 950 pictured here was an abject disaster, an infuriatingly poor product.
Thanks!

@@jason5031heat pump is not going to make a big difference. Only see like maybe 20 or 30 km range improvement with heat pump. Battery range is affected in winter regardless of havinh heat pump or not
@@samjam6989 Except that I live in a climate that gets cold in the winter. The addition of a heat pump increases range when you're not relying resistive heating. So the extra 20 miles you can save makes a difference.
does the trip planning work in the US version?
What is a portable charger
It’s like a fixed charger except that it can be moved and put in the car.
He misspoke. He meant L1 charging cable.
@@michaels3003 Yes, but the L1 charging cable is included with the car, maybe he was hinting at L1/2 charging cable?
@@Orange_Manbabytest drove ID 4 and bZ4X (neither with full OPD) and my wife found it so nauseating on each one she vetoed any use of it while she was in the car (then or in future). No such comments with OPD off. And she’s never been remotely nauseated in the car in our 25 years of being together.
Still can't get into the over-reliance on capacitive buttons everywhere.
I got the new one. The buttons work great.
After a year and half of driving the 2022 ID4, the buttons work fine. No issues with any it. Handles like a Porsche in turns and has jack rabbit starts. Quiet. Roomy. Good looking.

2025 needs to have NACS.
Proper window switches.
Get rid of those touch capacitive sliders.
The odd column button.
How about a fold flat 2nd row.
Needs pricing tweaks.
What's crazy is these are laughably reasonable things to ask for.
I can’t believe NACS is not already in use but good news most manufacturers are supposed to be on board starting in 2025

We have been having lots of problem with GPS and the navigation system doesn’t work properly all the time, it even screws google maps on apple play. With just about 1 month having it at home we have taken it to the dealership to be told they didn’t find anything wrong on it. In terms of the car we really like it, but I think software is the main problem here

First time I’ve seen cabin noise in Id4 as a negative point…🤔
Is the battery a lithium ion or lithium iron phosphate?

How tall are you? My husband is very tall and center consoles hit his knee.
@@GeeDeeBirdno heat pump in US models only Europe.
I’m sure it’s fine, though there are a lot of really appealing options in this segment so makes it difficult to endorse.
❤ your review. I am currently trying the Polestar 2. Cause I dislike Tesla
If only VW would upgrade the software of earlier cars as they indicated they would when new.
I'm probably more likely to get one like one of these because my dad has one and he would know what to do
You forgot to mention it include the park assist feature no human interaction to fully park the car
My WP7 LG is still the best phone I've ever used. Avatars! Achievements! Metro interface with live tiles!
This is a big improvement and will impact sales of the previous versions. In fact, I wouldn't buy a used ID4 of the pervious versions.
VW has committed to NACS. But when? It's hard to say at this point with Tesla Supercharger shakeups.
We also saw a Mach-E prototype recently with a tow bar, so maybe it's coming. We know lots of people are asking for it.
The ID4 is now a really good package. When the ID2 is launched VW will become a force again.
2 things:
a) Didn't know there was ever a Windows based phone, but I've never owned anything Windows based so there you go.
2) Digging the Italian style "arms out" driving position you chose.
They should include the id7 seats in this car. They are much better.
Friend just bought one and the day after he brought it home the thing wouldn't start.
Seriously didn't know how to put on seat belt?
Didnt list what you didn't like before thats suddenly so much better. Prior RWD long range has the same range as the 2024 AWD, so I don't see why that wasn't sufficient before but suddenly is now.
Don’t understand humor, eh?

WTAF??!!? Deciding to put on his belt before taking it for a test drive... he connected the driver's seatbelt to the passenger seat locking mechanism. (huh??!!?) Somewhere in that car there is a safety sensing computer module that just tried to divide by zero.

He didn’t drive it buckled like that (saw his reply to similar comment earlier on).
Nice review. This comment is for Craig’s work not a VW 🎈
@@cmdrstevemcmaru7417 agreed
The touch display is nice for many things, but keeping the basic HVAC and other commonly used controls real buttons is so much better imo.
The ID 4 is the slowest accelerating EV except the Chevy bolt
I have never thought I didn’t have enough power in either my 2021 or now the 2024.
we almost bought that one
They obviously want people to purchase their higher priced models forcing them
Into an unaffordable debt. That is so often the case, especially when you see so many repose from buyers who purchase beyond what they afford by crafty sales staff.
@@kelalamusic9258 As someone who purchased this car in the trim that I wanted, based on what I could afford, there's a responsibility on the buyer. I did my research about what features I wanted in an EV and cross-checked my list with the models. We have little computers in our pockets, you can even do it at the dealership!
I'm a woman and it still didn't take a lot for me to be firm on the trim I wanted. If a salesperson is trying to get you in a vehicle you don't want, switch salespeople or go to a different dealership.

These cars are terrible
Why? Please explain, just spitting out such comment doesn't make any sense.
@@cmdrstevemcmaru7417 I work with them all day and they’re garbage. Nobody who goes to get trained for certifications on them ever wants to touch them. They’re too heavy and get flats all the time too and they’re impossible to move when broken down. Also the driving experience is terrible and the range on one is incredibly low. They say for id4’s not to charge the battery to 100% but only to 80% or else the longevity of the battery will be at stake. They do that while advertising the miles per charge based on 100% charge. They depreciate like crazy and drive people’s energy bills up, and most importantly I’ve never met someone who owned one who actually liked it. It’s not a senseless comment it’s just a bad car
@@loafs1656 Your unbelievably biased and it sounds like you just don't like ev's. Shit if you want to charge to 100% all the time knock yourself out. All ev's depreciate like crazy and they ALWAYS WILL. Its the nature of technology particularly with battery tech always changing. As for driving your bills up, I have a chevy bolt and yes it drives up your electric bill but hey! your not paying for gas! and if you look at gas costs vs electric costs its cheaper to charge your ev even if its more often then it is to run your gas car especially if you drive alot. Overall, keep your opinion to yourself and if you dont like ev's dont work on them and don't watch videos on them.
@@Shotgunanybody you sir should keep your opinions to yourself😂. And you shouldn’t say things that aren’t true. Gas is still cheaper now than an electric bill with an ev. Most importantly I’m talking about problems with the car, you’re talking about your feelings which if you love the car ignore me. People who are on the fence should know what it means to own an ev before they buy one and that’s the cause of their regret
@@loafs1656 And you sir, shouldn’t say things that aren’t true. It is less expensive to charge an EV than to buy gasoline for the same distance travelled. And the three minutes to fill a gas tank is done at a pump, not at home. No one spends 12 hours at a public charge station, more like 20-30 minutes which gets you plenty of range to get gome and charge overnight. When that 12 hours you’re complaining about is spent sleeping. You’re clearly biased against all EVs.
