  • I show the physical differences between the seven (7), 10 and 13 vane pump rotor-slide combinations for the 700R4 and 4L60E transmissions. I also discuss interchangeability between the different versions of this transmission family from 1982-2013.

Great video enjoyed it and I learned I seem to be learning a lot more from your videos. I need to sit down and just go through a bunch of them and take notes before I start my next endeavor.

Got a normale new 10 vane pump assembly kit, but they delivered a slide for a 13 vane. As far as I got it right out of your video I can put the 10 vane rotor in the 13 vane slide?

Hi Camaro, you should be fine though I'd see if I could send it back to get what you paid for but if push comes to shove you should be ok to run it. Just check your clearances to make sure everything is within spec (.001-.0015 for rotor-deck and .001-.002 for slide to deck).

I have an 87 700r4. Going into it for some shifting upgrades. Haven't removed the pump. If I have a 7 vane can I go to a 13 vane? What modifications do I have to make? Thanks.

No special mods needed though if you're upgrading I'd drill the drain back port to 5/16", install Transgo's "Unbreakable Pump Ring" kit as it has a better priming spring in addition to the ductile iron rings, which are essentially unbreakable...Toss in a new 13-vane rotor guide and vane kit, inspect rotor/slide for any concerns, otherwise just make sure rotor and slide are within spec for clearance (shoot for .001 clearance for both and the pump body deck surface).
Measure the height of all vanes that come in the package as once in a great while, you'll get one that is a bit too tall/long and will bind up the pump.
Last thing I'll add is that a factory 10 vane pump is structurally a little stronger than a factory 13-vane rotor and more than sufficient for any conceivable need in 700R4s and 200-4Rs (with the latter, the 7-vanes are perfectly fine for most anything)...I'd recommend going with a billet rotor if you're wanting to do a 13-vane set up.

@nickstransmissions I appreciate your quick response. I'm no transmission expert. I'm not even a novice. I can swap them with the best of them. Rebuilding? For reference, I got an 700r4 from a friend. Supposedly came out of a 87 suburban 2wd. I'm replacing the Borg-Warner trans in my 73 XKE. John's cars kit. Dude has been doing this for a while. Obviously shifting in a suburban would be different than a Corvette/Camaro and I want it to shift like a muscle/sports car and not a truck I figured a Corvette servo(from a reputable shop) Transgo shift kit, upgraded pump(13 vane?), and a 1800 stall converter should get me where I envision. Watched a few of your videos and you make it way easier to understand. Definitely subscribed.

You're welcome, man and thank you for the subscription...Your transmission builder will know what to do insofar as calibration but the main difference between the Vette and basically everything else that took a 700R4 as far as calibration is concerned is the governor...The Corvette governors had super light secondary weights for much higher shift points than pretty much everything else. They look distinctly different compared to truck/pass car governors as well.

@@nickstransmissionspulled the pump. Found out it's a 10 vane. I guess I'll just roll with that. I will drill that oiling hole you recommend. Thank you.

Everyone tells me don’t believe everything you read, but I’ve read that in 1988 and up got a 10 vane pump rotor.

Yea, could be 88. Not 100% sure...I'll have to look it up and make a note in the description but ultimately it doesn't matter as you can interchange as needed.
Thanks again for watching J Ray!
