Oh dear. This is some serious discussion of Sohyang's Everyone. If I were a student, I would feel that I was taking a class of human anatomy, aerodynamics and vocal pedagogy, all at the same time. Very informative but I probably would switch to auditing the class right afterwards because I would certainly flunk it :-) Thanks for the reaction.
🤣 fabulous! I wouldn't go through this all in one class though. That would be tooooo much! If someone was singing this with me we would go over about 1/4 of the tech that I go through in this video. We always focus on small snippets and apply them before moving on to the next technical point.

World class vocal coaches, musicians, and composers are all amazed at how skilled sohyang is and even popular hollywood agencies like mariah carey, etc., have proposed her to join them but she rejected all those fame and money just to praise God and stay as a gospel singer, using her talents only to help, comfort people and give hope. There, we definitely got lots to say about this amazing skilled human being whom has never ever existed in our thousands years of human history, and will never be again with such personality and character.
That is just so wonderful isn't it. She is using her gifts to help and heal. This makes me like her even more!

I would say she brings her own flavour to the music but I agree what she is doing is just incredible and VERY difficult.
If so Hyang had listened to that kind of logic she wouldn’t be the kind of singer she is today. If you’re not interested in learning, you can go ahead and leave. She’s not teaching us how to be a carbon copy of the singer, she’s teaching us how to adapt to many of the techniques which make a singer great. I don’t understand why so many of you fangirls can’t understand this.
Sohyang is a full on journey itself especially with the many performance she has out there on RUclips. This analysis is definitely one of the more detailed ones out there which I wouldn't mind for a Sohyang performance. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the reaction/analysis and a warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is a ccm/gospel singer, devout Christian, and cancer survivor. Sohyang is an independent artist who does not sing for fame or fortune and has turned down many contract offers from the big labels, saying she wants to use her voice to bring comfort to people going through difficult times. She is not only one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet but a special human being also. In my opinion, the translation of the lyrics in this performance (and all her Korean songs) would have given your analysis an even better perspective, because as you get to know Sohyang more, you will understand that she is not just about the fantastic vocal techniques, but also about her ability to communicate her emotions, and the message of the song via the lyrics, which is what makes her so special. Look forward to your next reaction to Sohyang.

I predict this will be a very popular reaction, the technical analysis was great and very few coaches begin with this performance from her. I think what you will find is that besides the obvious technical skill she has developed it's how she uses that skill in service of the message she's sharing with the audience that really makes her special. One of my favorite moments in this song is at 23:28 and seeing your smile as she points towards towards the audience it's clear it landed with you exactly as she intended it to. Very excited to see you explore her catalog further!
I suggested Everyone because I wasn't sure if she'd react to her at some point again, so I wanted to make sure she sees her all-time-kill performance :D

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach The funny thing about her is that there is a small number of people who really don't like her tone, usually describing as overly nasal and shrill what I hear as bright, forward and laserlike in its clarity. I've learned not to argue with those people, (obviously Horses For Courses, etc) for many reasons but the most important is that my wife is one of them 😘 Music truly is subjective...

This is not a reaction - it is a vocal training class. Actually you can't teach a person to recreate Sohyang's voice - she has a gift. No one can sing like Sohyang. . . .
I completely agree. She is a wonderful vocalist and has a wonderful unique voice. I just hope I can help those who wish to learn the craft by using her songs. ;)

Two things I would share with you (this is long, so bear with me for few moments):
One, you have an appealing persona in front of the camera, but you really don't do a reaction, which is watching the performer along with your viewer and then commenting. Your facial and body language while watching is the reaction we look for. Even an occasional comment over the top of the performance - like a WOW or a Gosh, is fine. Your reaction to the performer's overall talents then becomes a professional appraisal of sorts.
You teach by interrupting the performance with instruction. That's fine in a classroom. However, as a casual observer, I am interested in seeing a professional coach react to the performance to see if you agree with my impression of the performer - not in learning to sing. What you did in this video is so clinical that it is dissection, not music appreciation. That is necessarily so analytical as to be off-putting. Your obvious teaching skills could be applied in a follow up through rewinding and doing highlights - you could even show the best stuff you record to your classroom or online students later.
And two, Sohyang is so unquestionably special that, as you so professionally demonstrated, she gives singing lessons simply by singing. Even a talented singer could not mimic that strangely angelic quality.
Many coaches on RUclips have gained a huge following by using the format I outlined - react, then teach.
I love these musical reaction videos - it has become a hobby, so I am the model casual observer.
All of this long reply is intended to be helpful, not critical - it depends on what you wanted to do when you set up your channel.

I 100% agree with your point of view. If I am honest I went WAY overboard here and I just got so excited to talk about her voice it really went too far. There is no way anyone could talk about her years of training and experience in a mere 30min. BUT I 100% agree the two are different.
I will definitely take what you have said on board and think a little bit more about my titles for the videos when I go into detail and when I don't go into so much detail.
I haven't been doing these reactions for that long, because I got so many requests from students they wanted to know what their favourite singers were up to with their voices. ;)
There is always room to grow and change.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach hi Zoe, if I may, I enjoy your format because it's also different from other singing coach reaction. So although I understand that to grow you also need to do what most people like, I also think more variety in RUclips (and everywhere) is a good thing ;)
So I understand Dave's point of view but I don't think you should necessarily change your format just yet to adhere more to what a "true" reaction video "should" be ;)

I seriously doubt that anybody else can sing like the PHENOMENAL So Hyang. She sings from the heart. She also teaches singing and vocal technique at a South Korean University.

I am sure you won't! Actually that is because our Larynx mimics what is being sung in front of us. We have mirror neurons which are acting when we are watching someone sing so that is 100% natural to experience actual vocal work when watching someone sing. ;)

2. Lean on me: This song was performed in front of Michael Bolton. After the performance, Michael Bolton said. Sohyang is on the level of a master. Sohyang said her wish is to do a duet with Michael Bolton here. Later, Michael Bolton invited Sohyang to his concert and performed a duet together. If you look at the video, you'll be able to see the incredible improvisation of Sohyang in the duet.
3. Bridge over troubled water: It's a song of full emotion that doesn't need words.
4. Arirang alone: A song that expresses Korean emotions well, a movie-like song, a song that hit B flat5 with chest sound, I recommend it.

No wonder her sound quality is amazing. What's even more amazing is that each song has a different singing method and tone according to the mood of the song. There are various voices in one song, but it is also different for each song. The method of delivery varies depending on the content of the lyrics.
I will have to check out more of her work, I am so looking forward to discovering more!

I Will Always Love You: You gotta check out her cover of it. It's fantastic. Also for that song is an artist named Ailee. Her I Will Always Love You is also just beautifully done.
Oh, it's weird to see my comment at the beginning :D (just heard your comment about you being in Germany?So..,Hello from Germany! Never thought that, would've said you're British judging by your English ^^). And now, first Faouzia's Bad Dreams (my favorite song of hers) and now Sohyang, what a great day for me! Thank you for your analysis (and I'm so glad you like her too) even though I recommend, if you'd check some korean songs as well in the future, just take a look at the lyrics since she's not only all about technique but she's a great storyteller as well. She's insane! She's actually a chameleon who can do every song and genre and turns it into hers. From Rock or Jazz to even rap. She tried it all.
What would be interesting maybe if you'd check out an English song of hers. She does her arrangements by herself on Immortal Songs. She sang Bridge over Troubled water there and Lean on me. Last one, directly in front of Michael Bolton. He invited her to join him on tour after giving her a standing ovation. She performed together with him later.
For a korean one, I highly recommend "Where are you" on I am a singer (Please use the vimeo one, if possible with subtitles, since the youtube version is cut and the lyrics are incredibly sad. The climax is heartbreaking) :) And a stage which has already legendary status is "Arirang Alone". It's a korean folk song turned into a beautiful arrangement with seemless transitions and beautiful vocals. (Here you should maybe check out the background first to understand the song) :)
If you want to hear something written by herself, she performed "Dream" live at DMC Festival (this is the best stage for sure). Key changes one after another and a 'nobody will dare to cover this' flavour :D 😀 And thank you for your comment about her hard practice at the end. She practiced years and years to get where she is. :)

I'll just leave a second comment because I already wrote so much (sorry for that ^^). I'd like to recommend you a close friend to Soyhang. Her name is Park Kiyoung and she's incredible as well. Is originally a rock singer but did things like jazz or opera great as well. She's known for her versatility and mixed high notes as well. Maybe you want to check out her, if you have some space. With "Spring Rain" she shows her rock roots on Immortal Songs with "Spring Rain" building it up from the low and blows everyone's mind with the end part. Or "Yeonan Pier" for her iconic performance of a smooth jazz piece. Both would be very interesting from an analytical point of view. 😊

I love your reaction and enthusiasm! She's absolutely amazing, I've been a fan for quite a while and I don't know anyone who sings like her.
I don't mind you pausing to explain, I've learned a lot from you, but if possible please try not to pause mid high note (I know that's tricky with her songs). It's a small thing but I'm really excited to see your reactions to those notes and then a bit disappointed when they get interrupted.
But other than that I love your videos, I'm so glad I found your channel!

If you don't know who Dimash is, then I suggest the song "S O S" a French song of an earthling asking for help!! 12 languages, over 6 octaves, and the best singer on earth. He's a level above any best singer you can think of!!

Why don’t you call what she’s doing mixed voice? That’s pretty much what you were describing.
Oh I see. You did eventually admit that it’s mixed voice but you don’t like the term mixed voice. I don’t see why, it’s a mix of a head and chest Résonance. That’s fine, as long as I know what you’re talking about. LOL.
Because it is a mix of what? I find that mixed voice is this elusive thing, but everyone's mix is different. You are correct though, she is Speech Level trained, and they mix all the way, but it is a thin mix rather than a beltier mix. It is a mix of thick vocal folds taken outside their natural habitat ;)

You are a legit vocal coach… But the thing is you started explaining twang when she actually did a dark tone with a low larynx at that point in the song. Don’t think you listen to it very well before you stopped the tape.

I understand. Twang at that level sounds super annoying, but we go to 100% (or too much really) then dial it back from there.

I disagree with most peoples opinion of your analysis of this world-class singer. in my opinion, when you reach her level, then you can dominate almost all of this video with your self-aggrandizing critique , otherwise, get over yourself. A good part of the world knows who So Hyang is and loves her...but here you are, analyzing someone to whom you cannot compare.
Sohyang is Queen. Dimash is King.
And it's Dimash's turn to be discovered by you. They say SoHyan is female Dimash. I suggest you to take his SOS performance from "I'm Singer" competition. Don't take Opera2 for the first reaction, this song is too primitive to show Dimash's capabilities
