Yeah, Like you said it was easy and safe performance indeed. Sohyang has very healthy vocal techniques and she prefers to utlize it in comfortable and solid approach which is founded on anatomical understandings. Unlike other singers she never try to overdo something or unnecessarily show off, just stick to the lyrics and engaging the audience with emotions. Look those sitting next to her, they are all famous singers and BIg fishes of KPOP yet they are mesmerized by her with true awe. One of them once mentioned that she is a Textbook of vocal technique and roll-model of vocalist in their generation. She really is.
Amazing! That is so correct though, it is all about playing it safe when needed and not overdoing it. Really were they? I didn't see their names in the comments so I was unsure who they were. Would you mind letting me know, I would love to have a look at their performances too.

Jung Seung Hwan -- usually a solo singer
Lee Hi -- usually a solo singer -- can do R&B grit--check out her duet with Suhyun called "Different" from this same show to see contrasting/complementary vocal timbres.
Suhyun (half of Akdong Musician a.k.a. AKMU, and also now solo) light soprano.
Sohyang (legendary at this point, idk whether considered an idol, certainly a world-class soprano, Christian gospel-influenced singer/song-writer/arranger/teacher and author)
Henry (singer, violinist and more, wearing ACDC t-shirt).
The other accompanists further stage left are famous musicians, too. I would say musicianship in S. Korea runs very deep and wide, possibly because there is so much emphasis on early training, excellence, and respect for "senior" musicians, traditions, and musical styles that have come before. The TV show Begin Again is an amazing show, lots on youtube...great place to see "live" performances. Two other notable singers appearing there recently were Shin Young-Jae (shockingly good tenor) and Lee Sora (a bit older jazz-influenced vocalist, very nuanced, mesmerizing). Enjoy!
Henry would be the only one considered an idol. Just letting you know. Lots of overseas people confuse idol as simply interchangeable with kpop or Korean singers. All idols are kpop but not all kpop are idols. Example: AKMU and Mamamoo. Neither are idol groups but considered kpop or vocal musicians vs a vocal group like Red Velvet who are idols. Idols are singers who are influencers towards the youth and have had publicity training, thus the harsher backlash when they are caught smoking or whatnot.
I can always tell when vocal coaches try to imitate sohyang singing style in order to explain how it is done technically.. that sohyang’s vocal skills are just a mere perfection and gift to my ears.
Sohyang is mixing and belting, pure voice of Queen.

So Hyang is well known for her vocal mastery but her demeanour & the soul in her voice often makes me feel like I’m simply here listening to someone with a story to tell. There’s a certain maturity in her music- from the songs she chooses to sing, to her choice of arrangement, and the way she delivers it.
“If I ain’t got you” made me feel those exact same feelings deeply and was my fav performance of her from 2020. Pretty sure you will like it too.

You should try Lean On Me for variety. Her King of Masked Singers numbers are wonderful and have a different feel -- Dear Love, Home, Mona Lisa -- but of course, she's wearing a mask so you can't see her face.

For your next reaction, I'll recommend "Misty" sung by Sohyang in 'Begin Again Korea' last year.
Very well done. This performance is part of a series where a group of musicians busk around Korea during the pandemic. As a result the arrangements are mostly acoustic and she doesn't ever get into full facemelting mode like in Everyone but each performance has something really cool in the same understated way as here. You are going to get lots of classic suggestions like Arirang Alone, Lean on Me, You Raise Me Up as well more from this series but If you want to be a legend do a technical analysis of It's Only My World (use the Vimeo version with subtitle) to hear what she does with a rock anthem. What a lovely reaction! Unlike the previous reaction video, you comments only on some particular points of the performance and remained focused on enjoying the song. You are quite right that in terms of difficulty, this rendition is not as dramatic as some of her others showings. Either in 2020 or 2019, Sohyang commented that she placed more emphasis on using the best of her vocal skills to give the best show she could before, but she became more interested in finding the emotional connection with her listener. And it seemed to have impacted her choice in the arrangement of the songs she performs. I thought this stage is pretty good example of that. To contract, Sohyang also covered Whitney's "I Have Nothing" and one can clearly see the difference.
In terms of Sohyang's performance I enjoy the best, I would have to say without question her iconic cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" on the program "Immortal Song 2". This song carried so much emotional impact that turned me into a Sohyang fan instantaneously. For reactions, I'd be interested in seeing your take on Sohyang rearranged 2018 rendition of "You Raise Me Up" also on the "Immortal Song 2".
BTW, appreciate the comment about what it means for singers to sing while sitting. Always curious about that.

Thank you for the analysis and technique explanations. I actually really enjoy that in contrast to just a reaction video. I used to play an instrument for a very long time and as with every instrument there’s technique and practice required. Hence it’s fascinating to hear something about singing technique and how the voice works. Keep up your great work and don’t let the negative comments (other videos) of people, who only want to hear a praise of their favourite artist, get you down.

Omg can you please make more videos on belting and mixed voice? I didn't know that back muscles also involved in belting, after taking your advice, my belts become better. You can talk about muscles that are working when belting/mixing, posture, tongue positions and other things that singers should take note while doing this. I love your explanations, they're so easy to understand❤❤

I learned six months ago that the back muscles are involved in belting… From a non-vocal coach on RUclips, she’s a singer who reacts to videos. Though I did learn that you could use the entire rib cage 360° years ago, so of course the back is involved in that.

My favourite Sohyang performance is the special arrangement she did of 'You raised me up' from Immoral songs 2. She only sang it that way the one time. I would link it but lately RUclips is making my posts with links disappear, and not just to spam boxes, they just vanish.
I hope you do bridge over troubled water at some point. But the whole immortal songs series is unbelievable.

With Sohyang you are really missing out till you get at least like 6 of the big ones in. Arirang Alone from Immortal Songs 2 is just tops. It's really just messed up how many great performances there are. Lean on Me is another beast performance. I have nothing is good, oh holy night is kind of epic. Mona Lisa will rock you. For what it is worth Mona Lisa and Lean on Me have some of the highest mixes you'll hear. "Home" is just fun and amazing. Where Are You is another stunner. I mean Bridge of Troubled water is one of the best things, but I'd put these listed as above that and the 2 you did. That's how dope she is.

Yes! This was a very clever review. I am not in the singing field but totally agree with the “safe” performance. I always thought it was not Sohyang’s most powerful performance but overall great interpretation. She did another one with a black dress and that one is better I think. Also, check out her “I have nothing” (blue dress) by Whitney. That one is pretty insane. Cheers 🙏🏽

Ohh, nearly missed this! Thank you for checking her out again..such a beautiful rendition. I love the show since it's such a friendly atmosphere with a lot of super talented artists. My favorite is Love Poem even though it's 'safer' as well. It's such a perfect performance. If you want to see something very different, you need to see "Day Day" there. She's rapping! (She did it on King of Masked singer as well and maybe better but maybe you'd like to see her face. For KOMS use Vimeo better, youtube has not a full version). And you'd her other singers like Henry (the one shown here as well) and Lee Suhyun (often called Mini-Sohyang, not because her mix is good or something but because she's an angel with an angelic voice) :)
By the way, if you want to hear something which definitely isn't safe but her very own song, you need to see "Dream" on DMC Festival. It's insane!

Maybe because it fits so well in the arrangement. It's a very beautiful piece. Just a snippet of what she can do but the final part gives you a taste of it. She's a chameleon and can do any genre. She's Sohyang's friend by the way :)
Yes, So Hyang is QUEEN and Dimash is King. I have to bring up another Korean I think is fantastic and that is "AILEE", she is one of the best KPOP singers, but her rendition of I Will Always Love You is absolutely fabulous!! Another Korean that just shocks everybody is "J.FLA", her rendition of BILLIE JEAN is fantastic with 42 million hits. She does "DESPACITO" which has over 188 million hits!! I don't know of a more cover artist than her. I believe there isn't almost anything she can't do!! Please check them out!!

Yeah! i like the lightness of the arrangement, but full of details (no so light) at each word, sentence. this felt more personal and singing for someone rather than "I'm going show off all of my vocal abilities" type of performance...

My favorite female singer is So Hyang and male singer is Park Hyo Shin from South Korea. Please reaction Park Hyo Shin Wildflower live performance. Korean people called him God's voice. Many western vocal coach reacted this performance.

Imho, Sohyang would have been able to belt all the way, however this is a stylistic choice. If you don't believe me, watch Everyone. It is a more than 7 min performance, and she did belt like half the song flawlessly. Or you can check out her song Dream at DMC Festival where she also performed I Have Nothing on the same stage.
Of course! She didn't need to in this one though, which is just wonderful. So many sides to her performances.

Yeah it's wonderful that she gave so many beautiful renditions with this show even though she herself said that she was at 30% of her power considering her health. She went to this show with a purpose, and that is to give us comfort during these times and she made many of us very happy. @@ZoeStibiVocalCoach She is a cancer survivor and her pneumonia does flare up from time to time I read.
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach we don't know exactly to what extent her health issues go but we know she has been dealing with pneunomia for 3 years now mainly, with other things like constant fatigue. Regarding these performances on this show, we just know that she said that it was 30% of her power and that she wasn't feeling well. She was also filmed using respiratory therapy nebulizer while on the set. It's not something new for her, she's said that she considers it as a blessing and that she has been taking care of herself more in the past year or so.

It's a shame that there was no mention of Dolly Parton who wrote this song. This is something that unfortunately many do not know. She sang the song fantastically long before Whitney Houston.
Dolly is the queen! Yes I most certainly know that Dolly wrote the song. That is the beauty of always singing / teaching from the sheet music, I can see who wrote the songs ;) Sometimes it is quite a surprise.

Actually this is a Dolly Parton song before Whitney
Dolly wrote and sang it as a country song but this version of it is modeled after Whitney's cover. Which is why in the corner they show Whitney when it first begins.
Yes indeed! I know, Whitney actually called her and asked if she could sing it. The phrasing and arrangement is all from the bodyguard though. The Dolly one is much more of a Country Ballad. But still BEAUTIFUL in it's own way.

보컬의 기초나 기본은 중요할수 있지만 그렇다고해서 그것만으로 소향같은 가수가 될수있는건 아니다.
특히나 서구의 보컬코치는 자신들의 한정된 시각과 보컬적 기술에 기초해서 얘기할 뿐이다.
노래 중간마다 끊어서 분석적으로 접근하는데 매번 볼때마다 거의 대부분의 서구애들은 왜 이런식일까 용량이 작아서일까
노래의 전체를 보고 그것을 온전히 느끼며 그 독특함과 유니크함을 그리고 그것은 보컬적 기술위에 수많은 노력과 열정이 닦고 닦이어 감정과 진심을 담아 만들어낸 보물같은 것이라는걸 잘 모르는거 같다.
