The K1 and its variants are all essentially a direct production of the US XM-1 built by General Motors. The US government, and by extention, GM, sold them the rights to build the XM-1, which the ROK manufacturers did and named it the K1.
General Dynamics, not General Motors. General Motors did have an XM1 prototype ofc, but the Chrysler (later merged with General Dynamics) design was selected and is what the K1 and Abrams are both based on
South Korea, which was rejected for licensed production of the M60 tank, later tried to develop a tank with technical cooperation from Germany. Although the Leopard 2 was released at the time, it was difficult to be certain whether it would be possible to export it to countries other than NATO allies, so it was an improved version of the Leopard 1. We were trying to develop a new tank. Just before signing this contract, the surprised United States said it would take responsibility for the development of a new tank and launched the "ROKIT" (Repulic Of Korea Indigenous Tank) project. Just before this proposal, there were reports that the U.S. would provide M1 Abrams tanks to South Korea.
K1 in fact is based on M1 Abrams - but consider this as diesel engine version without Uranium based armor.
Those things saved me many times in Wargame Red Dragon. Just wish they made more of them.
HAVE A NICE DAY
