I'm glad my months of continuous internet scouring for dance resources has landed me at your page. You're one of the best I've come across (and I've paid for a number of resources). One unique thing about your content (and one of my favorite things) is that you demonstrate wearing flats. Pretty much every other instructor films in dance shoes - as a beginner, I can't observe foot mechanics, observe weight changes as easily, nor where the weight is at any given moment. Additionally, they may dance a lot faster due to their shoes (due to the slippery soles and the heel lifts which puts their center of gravity over their balls of the feet) - a speed unnatural for me to follow being barefoot most of the time. Curious, would you recommend I train in flats over actually being barefoot? Are you wearing them for functional reasons (e.g. they significantly reduce friction and allow you to turn easier) or more aesthetic reasons (e.g. prevent feet from getting dirty, prevent callouses)? Thank you!

      Hi there!
I'm so glad you are finding my videos helpful :)
To answer your questions: I train and perform in heels, but I almost always teach in flats. This is to save my feet, as being in heels all day isn't so great for the body/feet. My reasoning is health-based and not functional or aesthetic. I actually find spinning in heels easier, as it positions your center of gravity more forward on the balls of your feet, which is where you want to be spinning.
I'd recommend dancing in flats, such as ballet shoes, with canvas split soles, but to be conscious of when you should be more forward on the balls of your feet, with the heels and calves lifted and when to be more flat-footed. This will be especially helpful when practicing spins and working on footwork speed/agility. If you have a pair of socks that aren't too slippery on your floor you can also try that first!
