very good video. it took me awhile to figure out that i needed to remove the intercooler-throttle body adapter. had to leave the old one hanging by a rope for a couple of weeks til the idea came. that was before this video was posted. then i had to remember how to put it all back together. GL350
Super! I am so impressed by your ability to research where to by alternate parts. Even being able to discern the difference in part numbers was amazing. Keep up the good work. Cheers, John
Great video as always. I think the old alternator was not charging as it should thats why you replaced it. From previous videos your w164 does not exceed a mileage of 300k km I think, so most probably the voltage regulator which costs 60 usd from Valeo would have fixed it. Had that happen to me on the w164 that I owned and the VR fixed it and it run great and still does after 20k km as I sold the car to a friend of mine. Out of curiosity if you have the old alternator just check the two brushes which wear over time.
Hi Mate, you are spot on in many ways! Yes my W164 has less than 300k, infact it is just 180,000 kms. I did think about replacing just the regulator, however the way in which my regulator failed was that it pushed excessive current into the armature winding making the alternator squeal. By the time I pulled over it was clearly burning the armature windings. My mistake I should have pulled over as soon as I heard the noise and pulled the D-Plug to the Alternator, but I was in a rush getting my son to school. Given the car is actually my daily drive I didn't want to risk just swapping the Regulator given how badly the alternator had smelled (burning smell) from as I mentioned what I believe is excessive current pushing through the armature in this failure mode. I was actually thinking about doing a seperate video about this, explaining what happened and why I did not just replace the regulator but explaining how to replace the regulator for the normal failure mode which you have highlighted. Would this be a video that you would be interested in? Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt Thank you for the thorough feedback. As a regular visitor in MB forums I would be very interested in a video about the issue you had as I do not think that it is that common to happen. Regards👍
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support! I was conscious that with my father in law helping me that this one would be a bit more off camera work with then stopping for explanations so I'm glad that you still found out it helpful! Cheers Drew
Excellent tutorial Drew! Say no more! Btw, looks like the part number you have in the description was from a different job. Thermostat replacement perhaps!?
Hi Charlie, Thanks for the compliment and great pickup on the original part number in the description! As a little channel I do everything myself on the side to a demanding day job so the extra eyes on things like this is actually really appreciated :) I have updated the description to have the OEM part number as: A6421540402 Cheers Drew
are these the same steps to replace the water pump as well that's above it? can you make a video on it? I searched youtube a lot and there doesn't seem to be a good video with clear and easy instructions on how to do that, some people make a really quick video and skip half the steps or it's for the gas or another model, but i was trying to do it with removing the least amount of stuff as possible, and it seems like a common problem to leak after as these cars are getting older. i ordered the part and it's coming in a few days, so please upload it soon lol
Hi Drew i live on a farm near Maitland Yorke Peninsula im looking for some 620 datto parts if interested in helping me get my ute going hope to get in touch if able to help me,

Hi Mate, what are you looking for exactly? I’m assuming you have seen my videos on the Datto Ute? Cheers Drew
Looks easier to do than an army g wagon, with two alternators, in a shit spot too.
