  • A quick intro to the Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie and a little but more about the semi historical kit i am putting together and why.
    This is a beast of a knife that i have high hopes for as a multi use tool from chopping and battening to camp tasks and fine carving.
    There are differing opinions on whether how these were used and i think most agree it was predominantly a fighting knife however it seems unlikely that cowboys and frontiersmen would have carried more tools than were necessary on the trail and a big blade like this, in my opinion, would have many uses.

    As a proud American, I replaced the wood handle with a Red Stag antler. It's now a historically accurate symbol of our brutal and rugged history. 💪 🇺🇸

    the greatest thing about cold steel is that it is very creative.

    I had the typical home with a typical knife collection. Nothing valuable really. My house caught fire due to an electrical short and I lost practically EVERYTHING I owned. The most painful being family portraits, and videos of the babies. My knife collection was gone. I had a Victronox Spartan and a Opinel carbon steel pocket knife. I salvaged a canvas tent, a stainless steel pot, a back pack, and that was almost it. I ended up homeless for 4 months living in the woods. I found O needed a larger budgetary knife and found a surplus British army M.O.D. 3 knife at a pawn shop. I bought it but it was rather dull.
    Using nothing but found stones, and a lot of time and elbow grease, I was able to put an extremely functional edge on it in field conditions. Following Dave Canterbury's advice to " sharpen once, home forever, " I was able to maintain the edge.
    I started on concrete, and found progressively "finer grit" stones, ending with a piece of broken ceramic tile. I also used my leather belt as a strop.
    Here I thought I had come up with something!😄

    Cool Review. I like the " Keeping it Old School " idea you're going with. I have Used stones I found lying around for sharpening my Work Trowels & It works pretty good.

    I am a bushcrafter to, but i also purchase knives like this all the time. Ols school is the best school in my opinion. It is first and foremost a fighting Bowie. But you have alot of criminals and gangs,robbers,rapists,knife attacks and alot of burglars in the UK, so have it beside your bed at night, and make it super shaving sharp, just my two cents. It is easy to buy a shotgun i hear, is this correct? go down to a police station and fill out a form. We had alot of sharpening stones in the old days, here in Norway we have a large production of natural sharpening stones for houndreds of years. You can still buy natural stones, buy a Arkansas stone to keep it in a American style. Batoning was not done in thwe old days,a knife like this was used for protection against other humans,wild animals and Indians. And they did not have a knife that looked exactly like this eather, this knife is more modern in style fighter Bowie knife. They had trade knives and knives forged by local blacksmiths. And a pocket knife and a axe or a tomahawk or belt axes. But you can do everything with this knife of course. Whittle,chop and fight, allround knife or a survival knife in a way. But would prefer my BK9, BK22 or one of my Junglas knives for that maybe. But for protection and survival this will do. But more a knife for a fighter,gentleman, officer or a good old wildman/rebel. Bt the way, i allways use flint and steel. It works much better than the modern crappy firesteel, who is often made in China and who knows whats in it. Smoking strange metall mixes from China is not a fav thing to smoke. And i forge my own firesteels anyway, and knives. But when bladesmithing, i know what i ingest atleast.

    That is a beast lol the historic kit is definitely an interesting project looking forward to seeing it develop. Not sure if you would need a tomahawk with that knife but it would fit in with the theme.

      Alba Outdoors I’m still working out some of the details but in essence I want a canvas pack, flint and steel kit, pot/cup, knife and shelter.
      I thing the Bowie will work well as a chopper so unlikely I will take a hawk as well but I have one so watch this space.
      Pot and shelter will likely be more modern fare purely down to weight/size but it’s more of a nod to the historical frontiersmen than a fully authentic reproduction.

    That thing is badass! Can't wait to see this kit.
    Maybe you could get some sandstone from somewhere. That has been used for sharpening for a long long time. You could even shape your own bench stones if you had a big enough piece.

    • @WoodcraftHamster
      @WoodcraftHamster  6 лет назад +1

      scottecooke I’m thinking about doing something just like that but maybe a little smaller.
      I’m thinking something like a DC3/DC4 Stone in size (maybe a little bigger) but 2 or 3 times thicker.

    • @scottecooke
      @scottecooke 6 лет назад +1

      That would be cool. I haven't used sandstone yet so I don't know how fast it would dish out on you. Another option if you were to buy stones would be to buy Arkansas stones. You can get them in all different sizes even pocket stone sizes. Natural stones like that have been used for a long time and would fit perfectly with that kind of kit.

    I'm gonna buy one but replace the handle scales with micarta. Maybe even replace the sheath with custom leather or kydex.

    I would be replacing the flathead screws with hex then adding a dash of 243 loctite. It will never come loose again.

    in throwing a knife like that the tip isn't your problem what is the problem is if the handle is welded to the knife the weld will most likely break

    • @coldsteel.and.courage
      @coldsteel.and.courage Год назад +1

      Yes, but you'll be making it custom and be willing to face legal repercussions if ever caught as most places have laws against large knives being concealed. If you can work leather you can make a custom sheath and use a concealed pistol holster belt snap to attach it to your pants (or kilt) with the sheath on the inside. This leaves just the hilt exposed and easily covered by a untucked shirt, jacket, or vest. I worked in night club security for a decade and concealed a 16" long Bowie the entire time without anyone ever noticing (except the one time I thought someone was about to draw a gun on me).
