    I use Synology for about 12 years now, first a one bay, now a 4 bay with 12Tb dedicated space (RAID10 pool) and I still love it, pretty much all the audiofiles I'm working with are there, and administration, like a map with ongoing invoices, or handled invoices are there. Very recommended. And great after sale services too.

    Chris, great intro for DSM. Been using Synology for years. Recently I decided to build a TrueNAS box for my lab, but I also wanted to use it back up my Synology. Got there with rsync (it's only inside). After playing with TrueNAS, I do have to say, what you're really getting with Synology is the OS. It's easy to use, lightweight, and feature rich, with the Package Center and all the things you can do!
    I've used QNAP (they do have nice hardware), TrueNAS/FreeNAS, and a few other things over the years. The best OS / Interface out of all of them is Synology, every day, all day long. ZFS (TrueNAS) can claim it's a better file system, QNAP can claim it has better hardware for the price, but what none offer is the simple setup, easy to use interface that is DSM.

    Got a 2 disk Synology a few years ago its never missed a beat even when one hard drive went AWOL, just wish I had got a higher spec version, its so good as a all-round package, links up to my security cameras, files, TV, no problem, really is great software inside, if you are looking for a NAS as a first time user I would recommend a Synology NAS and at the moment its still worth the dosh :-)

    I use Syncthing, and it's so convenient (at least for me), as it allows me to selectively sync files across peers, using UIDs. A plus thing is, as it's peer-to-peer syncing, it can sync automatically across the internet, and the files are also ready to be accessed anytime.
    What do you think about Syncthing?

    I already have two Syno boxes (918plus and 420plus), they're fantastic,
    1) the setup is very easy and quick, takes couple minutes to have fully working system ready to use
    2) QuickConnect is a life saver if ISP provides only dynamic address
    3) Syno Drive is a life saver especialy on iOS, because I can finally access files from my iOS device (just try copying an image file from computer to iPhone, it's not possible by default lol!)
    4) web interface for DSM and File Manager is great when you need to login on public/friend's computer, it's much faster using web browser GUI than mapping drives on computer
    5) wake on lan tasks are supported, in Syno Task Scheduler syntax is "synonet --wake" (without quotes) followed by mac address and "eth0" (again without quotes) to wake any device in your LAN, very convenient as well

    Thank you Chris for this review. Most informative.
    I also utilize Synology Drive on a smaller Synology NAS than yours, but I also have it configured to back up to cloud via the iDrive service as an additional protective (offsite) measure.
    You mentioned at one point about not having to use services like DropBox or iDrive. I understand your premise in not having to utilize 3rd party cloud services, but do you use a specific backup strategy (eg. on prem + cloud) to backup your backups?
    I also know you use Ubiquity but I would love to see a port forwarding tutorial for Meraki appliances (MX65 in my case). I am currently forced to use QuickConnect as the MX65 does not seem to be compatible with the Router Configuration option in the External Access section of the Control Panel.
    Anyway, love your videos and I am looking forward to more of them.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  3 года назад +1

      I used iDrive a long time ago probably 10+ years, but in recent years I really like Backblaze as a cheaper alternative and if I'm backing up less than 1TB I'll just use the Synology Backup service as it is pretty cheap as well. My backup strategy is pretty basic. Nightly backups to cloud with local snapshots and previous versions enabled.
      For business if I was going to utilize a device like this, I would do local replication to an identical box and then push nightly cloud backups for disaster recovery. These things are so cheap and easy to replicate it makes no sense not to do something like this.

    Since my switch to Linux a couple of months ago I'm very frustrated about not being able to mount my WD MyCloud NAS via Dolphin in Manjaro whereas it mounts without issue via macOS and I've yet to figure it out-WD (devices and support) seem to _not_ be Linux friendly and I think I might transfer all my files to a Synology device, wipe the WDMyCloud and trash it-or go Office Space on it and send it to Western Digital.

    Synology is very nice, however, I'm more inclined to build a normal box and either use the DSM clone on it, or my own stuff... I've seen big issues with them taking 2-3 weeks to return an RMA, which is terrible for a business env. choose carefully, and get 2 and mirror them.

      I've done QNAP a couple times in the past, they are good products, but I like Synology a bit better. Very similar in product offerings though. • @skf957
      @skf957 3 года назад

      From my very recent experience: I’ve had a Synology DS118 (using nightly incremental Hyper Backup to an old Netgear Duo RAID NAS) for a couple of years. Two weeks ago I bought a Synology DS220+ and thought that I might be able to simply move the disk from the DS118 to the new NAS. You CAN do that if the models are identical, so that was not an option for me. There is also a migration route where the disk is moved to the new NAS and various on-screen options taken that preserve the data - but on the new NAS box. BUT, (and this is where the superb Synology documentation comes in), this was not an option as my DS118 was not on the “list” of devices that this works for. So I had to go with a 3rd option: Hyper Backup (remember the Netgear NAS) restore to the original disk(s) but in the new NAS. Now, I had the benefit of a fully functioning DS118 so was able to take a FULL backup - including the system configuration settings (user accounts, permissions etc.) and the application settings. Prior to the new NAS I’d just been backing up the folders - and now I know that if the DS118 unit had failed, I’d still have been able to restore the data, but it would have been a bit of a chore to reapply all the system and application settings. The more I use these Synology NAS units, the more that I am impressed with them. That being said, I wouldn’t open up anything to the internet that stores my precious data. I certainly would not use Quick Connect as that goes via 3rd party servers (Synology).
