Is there a way to do this with NAS units of different brands?
you deserve more subs!
🙌
Great video. Been setting up my QNAP TVS - HX74 for remote editing. It's going to be a life changer!
Do you recommend this NAS? I'm looking for the best NAS for my needs. I create roughly 10-12 videos of 50GB each in 4k footage. I have two remote editors.
@@TheMichaelTech It has been working great in the office. I haven't been able to set up for remote editing yet. It's a little more complicated for remote editing, still trying to figure out.
@@Clevelandvideographer Are you able to edit 4k video files? I’m very much interested in remote editing aspect as well
@@TheMichaelTech We've only been editing for a couple of weeks off of it so I can't give a complete review of the speeds in 4K. However, so far, it's been running great.
Hi~! Are you editing footage wirelessly or ethernet to each machine?
Thanks a lot for your video ! What happens when two persons open one file at the same time, does it support some sort of blocking system ?
Good question. It’s exactly the same as if you were to both try and open it on shared storage in the office. It would cause issues and you’d both be overwriting each other.
If one of you is opening to read only then that’s fine but it won’t work if you’re both trying to write to it.
A question I'm struggling to get an answer is how does the transfer speed of a cloud sync NAS compares to the transfer speed of other cloud sync services like Dropbox? They're both over the wifi internet, and their transfer speed appears to be the same, because the max transfer speed of a NAS over wifi is never over 50 MB/second, which is about the same speed I sync from Dropbox. Thus, I'm not sure what's the speed advantage of sharing files remotely using a NAS versus a cloud service like Dropbox. Can you please shed some light on the speed advantage? Thanks.
bumping this!
Hi! I'm, about 2 seconds from pulling the trigger on purchasing the NAS however I do have one question that relates to its remote capabilities. If I had a person working remotely, would they still need to download the footage/files from the NAS to their desktop or external drive in order for them to not experience 'lagging'? Or would the remote worker be able to smoothly utilize the footage directly off the NAS without bringing it onto their computer locally? Thank you!
The answer is “it depends”. Quite unsatisfying, but if for example you are using Davinci Resolve, you should be able to generate proxy files on your local system to avoid the lag.
So does my editor or separate office have to have a Same brand NAS unit for this workflow to work?
Hey DavidBlodgett, yes, they would need to be on the same NAS brand. Depending on the size of their local storage though they could just use the sync client without needing a separate NAS.
Also, since I made this video there’s been a great uptake in a product called LucidLink which I recommend you check out.
