It's faster to run with an item than without, and chaff is an accepted item in all areas of the facility. In the Nuclear Warhead floor, every other weapon is unequipped automatically.
LMAO!! Liquid fight at 1:21:09! LOL!!! I like that part. Going Atatatatatatatatatatata Nice Shot AtatatatatatatatatatatatatatataTUH!!! (There he falls down)
It's true it was played with an emulator, we make no secret of that. Says so right on top of our website and in the explanation. But the resulting video has not been edited, it's not artificially faster.
TAS author here to provide answers! The stomp actually has a very small hitbox, stretching out slightly beyond the Ninja's, and the wave is just an effect which you can't get hit by. As for the Nikita, for some strange reason when Raven enters invincibility frames after getting hit, he can't hit you or the missiles either. It's just a quirk that might be contextual, but I found it by accident and as you can see, it was very useful.
It's slower to set up a stun lock on Raven with stingers than with Nikitas, and it's also faster to pick up extra Nikitas when I first get the Nikita launcher rather than diverting for extra missiles.
the Nikita was for entertainment, actually. I had to wait in the cold room anyway so I wasted a few frames equipping the Nikita and having some fun with it.
@GAMESYSTEMHUNTER Man, it sure was good of you to list EVERYTHING that came after mg, mg2 and mgs1.. who would have thought the need to make things more and more grand as a series went on would have made the developers come up with unique vilans. You sure are smart...
Because everything until Ocelot's post-credits call counts under the in-game timer. One of the objectives of my TAS was to get the best in-game time, otherwise if I going for fastest input movie I would have stopped input a little before the end of the Liquid chase.
I have both controllers put in from the start, and simply switched input on the emulator from controller 1 to controller 2 during the cutscene loading before the fight starts.
i remember when i was a kid, i would watch my dad play this game and loved every minute of it, of course when i played it i would only play with the stealth camouflage equipped because of how scared i was of getting caught.
People were complaining about the graphics? This is the first time I've seen them in a while and they look like they haven't aged one bit. I'm very impressed.
Wow this is really impressive! I didn't think I'd be able to sit through a 1:30 minute play through but I just couldn't look away! I about shit a brick when I saw you dodge bullets on the cat walk just before you reach the tower where you fight Liquid in the Hind-D. I was like...ooooh here we go; he's gonna get hit! And hell no...you dodge every bullet! LOL I guess in Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty when Snake dodged Olga's Spetznaz Suprise he really CAN dodge bullets! DAMN!!! LOL
They did remake it for the GameCube, it's called MGS: Twin Snakes. But personally, I prefer it like this. People might have forgotten, but during release time, MGS had pretty much the best fully 3D graphics anyone had ever seen on a console. You can still see the effort they put in it at present. It's no big deal to me that it looks pixely because they were limited to 2 MB memory. (Plus, the GC version has worse voice acting and Snake tries to dropkick Rex in a cutscene for some reason.)
Although I'm not the creator (I just put it online), I'd just like to say your comments on improving the run are very much appreciated. Like you said, if these discoveries pan out, we should be able to see a much improved run eventually. Thanks!
There's a very small chance that the elevator can come down instantly. It all depends on which frame you hit the Circle button. Naturally, since this is a TAS and I can manipulate luck to my liking, I made the elevator arrive every time. I don't think it's possible for the elevators to arrive instantly in MGS2 and 4, though. I'll have to check that.
It's on PS1, but in PC there are two options: if you're using a controller, you have to switch to the keyboard, if you're using just the keyboard, Psycho Mantis won't read your moves.
I found the Raven glitch by accident during my first TAS of the game, which was done on an older emulator, PCSX. That run was abandoned because the emu would freeze at Liquid's final monologue. As for Gray Fox, when you're in the PS version, try taking cover against one of the computers in the top-right corner while Fox is to your left. He won't be able to hit you because the hitbox for his stomp is right under his feet, and maybe slightly outwards; as I said before, the shockwave is cosmetic.
I don't know exactly how he did those things, but you can ask him yourself in either of the two forum topics I linked to in the movie description. This movie was made using tool-assistance, meaning he probably used some difficult technique that you can't really do during regular gameplay.
This is a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) where luck is manipulated and frame-perfect techniques can be performed. So, it's not so much predicting their moves as it is the perfect run. :P
Not sure the exact figure on this game, but MGS2 you are only allowed to save a total of 8 times, meaning even doing a segmented run would prove to be difficult. MGS4 you can segment it every screen, which makes it alot easier, and less frustrating if you mess up, since you dont have to repeat a 20+ minute segment.
i have a couple of doubts. When the ninja stomps on the floor it´s a sure hit. Also the M61 bullets easily destroy nikita missiles. And on both, he was unaffected. The most logical and reasonable answer to my doubts will be greatly appreciated.
People who complain about these graphics clearly weren't there when this game first released. I remember saying to a friend of mine that there wouldn't be any games as good looking as this one. I was amazed by the graphics alone. Not even gonna say anything about it gameplay wise as that would fill up the whole internet. Anyone asking themselves, should I buy the HD collection or maybe even MGS1, there is only one answer I can give you, why didn't you buy it yet? MUST HAVE GAMES!
Maybe you don't know but this is tool assisted, which mean even if a mouse ate his card (which probably happened or maybe not) he could have always backed to the time he still had his card. No question of luck but controlling it.
and more importantly, using an auto-equip/unequip in the middle of a throw cancels the animation allowing Snake to run normally while the enemy goes through his own "thrown" animation
I'm not the one who made it (player's name is 'theenglishman'), I just put the video online for him. Not entirely sure why they didn't hear it, but I seem to recall that the game is pretty forgiving with regard to gunfire sound. They can probably only hear the shot if you're a bit further up on the platform. You can get more questions answered on the forum linked to in the description.
Even though i'm pretty sure most would might disagree, I'd like to see a TAS of the PC version, very easy mode, with Stealth and Bandana, JUST to know what the absolute fastest time, out of all versions of the game, that this game can be completed in, within in game circumstances, is.
Did you even try it? Use the "weapon button" near an enemy while not having anything equipped and, at the same time, use directional controls (aush as the D-pad or the left analog stick). That's how you perform a throw. And to choke an enemy's neck, just press the "weapon button" near them without using directional controls.
Even if that isn't the case its mentioned that its a tool assisted speed run at 0:55, and contains "Heavy Luck Manipulation" according to the site. Way to do your research.
Love this run. Amazing stuff. What is the manipulation to make the elevators all arrive instantly? Is it just pressing the call elevator button on two consecutive frames or something more devious?
0:21:28 Psycho Mantis: I can read you like an open book Solid Snake: You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you, because I know everything YOU'RE GOING TO DO, STRANGE, ISN'T IT? Psycho Mantish: ....fuck.
The mouse always starts in the same spot but usually runs away before you can kill him. With a quick Stinger, however, you can kill him before he runs away. It's also possible, but very difficult, to do on a console; you need really good timing and reflexes.
- Are you really the author or someone taking his place? - The stomp's hit radius isn't that small. I played this myself, both on PlayStation (2) and PC. - I didn't know about Raven's glitch, but when was the first time you found it by accident ?
it abuses a bug in the programming, standing in a particular small area causes him to be stuck in his "shoot snake" (even though he's out of range) mode. it's a technique developed by brazilianjoker. as for the minefield, hit detection can be broken there using careful movement. nothing in this video can't be done on a console (some things are just really difficult). please check the link in the description for information on the run's verification and on what "tool-assisted speedrun" means.
well, you gotta agree that in mgs2 is WAAAY easier than in mgs4 to pass without alerts .... but yea u right, i just got a BB emblem in mgs4 like 3 days ago, and was because i could save a LOT and study enemys movements
I like watching these yet I hate it as well. I only hate them when they are of a game I played, because I remember how long it took me or how hard a part was and he just blows right through everything. Good run none the less.
Wolf: I am the greatest assassin ever, I am unparalleled with a Sniper Rifle, I can wait for days for my prey, you are no match for me in a Sniper Duel. Snake: I have a rocket launcher. Wolf: Shit.
Only if the run required a limited amount of saves would MGS4 be harder. The fact that you can save and reload as many times as you want to accomplish the emblem made it the easiest one to get.
@m82sniper99 It's a problem with the emulator. Older versions of PSXjin also had problems rendering the voice acting, but in this version only the item acquisition/selection sounds are incorrect.
The reason you don't get it is because you're not comprehending what I'm saying. I did not say that this was not a speed run, I said this is not JUST a speedrun. (Notice I put just) There is a difference between speedrun and tool assisted speedrun which I have said about a thousand times already.

OMG... i love metalgear music so much, especially from this one.
Awesome videos dude...
It's true it was played with an emulator, we make no secret of that. Says so right on top of our website and in the explanation. But the resulting video has not been edited, it's not artificially faster.
Best game ever made.
True!!!!

This was wonderfully awesome to watch. I love this game to bits, and its great to see it taken to its absolute limit. An hour and a half well spent!
about three minutes or so. You need to go through two rounds of torture minimum to save Meryl before Otacon shows up.
It's slower to set up a stun lock on Raven with stingers than with Nikitas, and it's also faster to pick up extra Nikitas when I first get the Nikita launcher rather than diverting for extra missiles.

I CAN'T DO IT
S'NO GOOD
I CAN'T DO IT!
Right when you start the video and you hear just a bang and a blur of title screens before the game, you know this is going to be good.
I love how he's trolling the gaurds at the start
@GAMESYSTEMHUNTER Man, it sure was good of you to list EVERYTHING that came after mg, mg2 and mgs1.. who would have thought the need to make things more and more grand as a series went on would have made the developers come up with unique vilans. You sure are smart...
Your reply to him made me laugh so much, plus your username is amazing.
Because everything until Ocelot's post-credits call counts under the in-game timer. One of the objectives of my TAS was to get the best in-game time, otherwise if I going for fastest input movie I would have stopped input a little before the end of the Liquid chase.
So Mantis, what new version of Pokemon are you getting when it comes out?

I have both controllers put in from the start, and simply switched input on the emulator from controller 1 to controller 2 during the cutscene loading before the fight starts.
i remember when i was a kid, i would watch my dad play this game and loved every minute of it, of course when i played it i would only play with the stealth camouflage equipped because of how scared i was of getting caught.
Ok that running around punching and confusing the guards at the elevator was funny! Guard who got off was RIGHT IN SNAKES FACE XD
People were complaining about the graphics? This is the first time I've seen them in a while and they look like they haven't aged one bit. I'm very impressed.

Aw, that sucks. Thanks for answering that, I was wondering since I don't know this game very well. Awesome run!
I tried testing that, but going out of the way to grab more C4 negates the time saved from the fight.
They did remake it for the GameCube, it's called MGS: Twin Snakes. But personally, I prefer it like this. Awesome, been waiting for a completed run.
I found it deeply ironic that you knew Mantis' every move before he did it.
Wish I could play the Mgs games for the first time again. Each was superb and IMO haven't been surpassed. Brilliant.
To me, this is seriously one of THE greatest games ever made.

@TriggerheartExcelica It's an emulation glitch. PSXjin tries its best to emulate the voice acting but sometimes it just doesn't work.

- Are you impressed ?
- Well... a little bit...
- Only a little ?
*Walks straight forward*
holy christ! this dude playing is unbelievable.
exelent man !! i thought it was fake, but at last minute you get hurt, so i think you are an exelent player ! thanks for the video!
you can't possibly imagine how hard that made me laugh. thank you, sir. you made my day.
I don't know exactly how he did those things, but you can ask him yourself in either of the two forum topics I linked to in the movie description. This movie was made using tool-assistance, meaning he probably used some difficult technique that you can't really do during regular gameplay.
This is a tool-assisted speedrun, not a console speedrun. You can go to the TASvideos website for more information on the differences between the two.
Love the huge long path Meryl takes through the mine field when all you have to do is run along the left wall
That was amazing man you are a beast! :D
I beat the game on extreme and it was difficult, but this vid with taht rank is a masterpiece.
finally an mgs1 TAS can remember when watching an TAS where he couldt finish due to an emulator bug
This is a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) where luck is manipulated and frame-perfect techniques can be performed. So, it's not so much predicting their moves as it is the perfect run. :P
Screw the rest of this, I was amazed by how fast you put the disc in!
Jeez how good are you at this! Must've played it for 1000's of hours!
You are the best MGS player ever
Not sure the exact figure on this game, but MGS2 you are only allowed to save a total of 8 times, meaning even doing a segmented run would prove to be difficult. I feel sorry for Liquid's face after all those punches lol!!! Amazing speedrun you are a legend!!!!!!!
@pwnedTAS
I think it's more-or-less the comedy factor behind the tricks. The more complex tricks probably just leave them too stunned for words. :'P
professional gameplay. indeed worthy of the Big Boss rank. Thanks a lot for the Answer. ^^
Holy shit, the first 3 minutes are amazing.
People who complain about these graphics clearly weren't there when this game first released.

the best game i've ever played. nothing else to say. mgs 4ever!
Meryl Finishes mines: Well, were you impressed?
Snake: Well, only a little bit
*runs across all of them*
Yeah, the controller was switched during the cutscene loading time. Using controller 1 requires you to die against Mantis first.
He didn't actually shoot himself with the Nikita. He detonated it right in front of his face.
I'm not the one who made it (player's name is 'theenglishman'), I just put the video online for him. Not entirely sure why they didn't hear it, but I seem to recall that the game is pretty forgiving with regard to gunfire sound. 50:35 Snake: Elevator Rumble, You Say? *Breaks all the necks*

Love this run. Amazing stuff. What is the manipulation to make the elevators all arrive instantly? Is it just pressing the call elevator button on two consecutive frames or something more devious?
It depends at what frame you call the elevator so we call it “luck-manipulation.

yup that's the only way I could do it. I'd like to do another big boss run on it.

well done sir, my sincerily respects 4 u
Just a little correction. There is no auto-equip/unequip in 'Metal Gear Solid'. You have to do it yourself. But thanks for that little hint anyway.
it abuses a bug in the programming, standing in a particular small area causes him to be stuck in his "shoot snake" (even though he's out of range) mode. it's a technique developed by brazilianjoker.

I missed that elevator fight with the 4 stealth camo guys w
ClassicCoyle that was the most memorable moment in the game
I like watching these yet I hate it as well. I only hate them when they are of a game I played, because I remember how long it took me or how hard a part was and he just blows right through everything. Good run none the less.
Ultra combo?! He just plain knocked that dude the hell out! I'm surprised he didn't die on the spot from getting his brain bashed in! Holy Crap!
Wolf: I am the greatest assassin ever, I am unparalleled with a Sniper Rifle, I can wait for days for my prey, you are no match for me in a Sniper Duel.

"What was that noise?"? More like "what was that thing that just threw me to the ground 5 times? Probly just the wind.."
The reason you don't get it is because you're not comprehending what I'm saying.
I did not say that this was not a speed run, I said this is not JUST a speedrun.
(Notice I put just) There is a difference between speedrun and tool assisted speedrun which I have said about a thousand times already.
i counted
liquid took about 83 punches to the face and managed to remain conscious.
Gray Fox: Fire the stinger!
Snake: IM TRYING TO! DAMN GAME DONT LET ME!
maaan, at first, this was really awesome run.
but i can't figure how you predict ocelots and, especially, mantis moves. I don't even see him at the vid, but you shoot directly to his head.
What is the trick?
and thats the story of how snake infiltrated shadow moses and defeated liquid snake in 1 hour 31 minutes and 49 seconds
Speedrun= Trying to beat a game as fast as humanly possible
Tool Assisted Speedrun = pushing the game to it's limit by completing a certain task as fast as the game allows you to. This is done normally on an emulator with it's load/save state anywhere feature to constantly save the game in case of a screw up or doing something which couldve been done faster and or better.
Difference between a plain Speedrun and a Tool Assisted Speedrun
If someone is not bright it's ronan saying it's the same
3:03 literary stares at snake
HUH?
Loves this game
Oh god, I forgot how dumb these guards could be! 0:57
The guard got choked out and all he can say is, "Huh what was that noise?"
1:08:00
Snake is just like "LOOK AT ALL THE FUCKS I GIVE"
50:12
Snake's got a Wicked Nasty itch.
noob question here: what is the tool - assist part of the speed run? I noticed sometimes guards don't behave normally but that's it.
It means that most inputs are assisted by an external tool, such as being able to do complex movements in splitseconds. In some games, it can also mean being able to do bugs that are almost impossible to do without perfect timing. In this speedrun, he sort of does a "turbo" button through the codec calls. He can also combo punches without doing any kicks or "combo attacks", and subdue and hit people from weird angles.
Now that's accuracy!
