Brake Squeal Explained

  • Brake squealing or squeaking is rarely a sign of trouble. Porsche engineers explain why there is a propensity for brake squeal. Though this is typical of high performance brakes, our superior engineering strives to minimize unwanted brake noise.

    This is basically Porsche saying "Stop being bunch of sissies" to the customers and cars are still mechanical and sounds are part of it and dont listen to your Tesla owner friends or neighbors (especially if live in San Francisco)who think this is a problem.

      Teslas don't use the brakes as normar cars, they tend to recover the energy while braking with the electric motors, also because there is no ICE the noise insulation is needed to be quite intense because others sounds tend to be more noticeable

      If Porsche's anything like Land Rover (I work at LR dealership), we have a mass amount of customers "complain" that their expensive premium cars should not have brake squeal. So spending a few thousand on this video, just so their staff can shove it in the stupid customer's face every time they complain... worth it.

    Big performance brakes have been prone to this sort of noise for DECADES now. It's not normally a problem if you use them hard from time to time but too many posers sitting in traffic don't get the concept and get annoyed that their 'expensive personal image enhancement object' makes noise and they can't hear their incoming text messages. ;-) Try three hard stops from 70-80 mph (on a clear road obviously) and see if they don't quiet down for a while. Get some heat into the rotors and clear off some of that pad material you've built up while posing in traffic. Once they cool down spray them down to clean the excess brake dust. In many cases that brake noise is merely a cry for help... your Porsche has become bored with your Buick-like driving traits.

    • @plocky4275
      @plocky4275 4 года назад +8

      @@benweiss7636 High performance brakes squeal when they are not being used as they should, which is hard braking. Period. This is well known since disc brakes' first beginnings in motorsport that goes all the way back to the early 50s. Any buyer capable and presumably enthusiastic enough to buy a Porsche or any other supercar that doesn't get this is straight up ignorant. The 911 user driving with carboceramics doing casual driving while complaining about brake squeal is indeed a poser that will never understand you need to drive and break hard in order to create proper heat so brakes can function properly.
      Not only that, Porsche is one of the few manufacturers that doesn't rely on third parties when it comes to braking technology, it's all made in house, which allow them to improve tremendously in relatively short time. Take the brakes from a 997 GT3 and a 991 GT3 and compare. Miles apart. Sorry sir, you are still a poser.

      Doesn't work, re-done the full bed-in procedure with 50 stops, it quiet down for like half a day and then back to being 30 yr old night bus at 4am in your neighborhood. They should not sell this as a street car without a fat red disclaimer you get x % chance yours will be the one that squeal, badly.

    I'd grown used to the annoying sound of brake squeak from the large front rotors on my MB C450 AMG, which the MB dealer examined and found to be good. I remember driving a Ferrari 430 Scuderia at Exotics Racing, and hearing the same squeak. Then just the other day, an Audi R8 pulled up beside me, and exhibited the same squeak. After seeing this video, I now consider myself to be proudly driving a car with large (and powerful) front rotors. Thanks, Porsche.

    We are Porsche. We make some of purest fastest sports cars in the world. We have a team of highly paid engineers that have been trying for decades to remove break squeal. It's never going to happen.. Well never say never. How about this when we solve it you'll be the first to know. In closing it's your state of mind. The squealing is a feature of high performance. True petrol heads know this and love the sound almost as much as they love the sounds of our engine . Drive this for a few more years and you'll come to miss this sound when we go fully electric. Porsche.... There is no substitute.

    Some people are bewildered why they would make this video. It's quite simple. Porsche makes an amazing product. People think that the product is flawed due to the noise when it is totally normal. If a mechanic or someone else in the dealership informs them, customers might believe that they do not want to replace the faulty brakes. When Porsche puts out a video, it tends to make things better. Plus, they don't want to tie up dealerships into fixing a problem that does not exist. Real-world and funny example: My girlfriend rode in my brand new GTS and said "for all the money you spent on this car, you'd think they'd make it quieter". Unreal. Lol. Not my girlfriend anymore :)

    I think the could have simply said that some high performance brake pads squeal when cold/at low speed, simply because of the material used. Sure, keep the frequency explanation (I didn't know that), but it still pretty much comes down to what material is used. Performance is always a compromise, and so often good brake pads are a bit noisey and even dusty, if they are track focused.

    I think if you oversimplify it you can say that there are 2 types of brake pads, the ''soft'' ones that are not so aggressive to the disks, they squeal less but have less grip and endurance, and the ''harder'' ones that squeal more they are more aggressive to the disks (disks maybe need change more often) but they have more grip and durability to pressure, temperature and use overall. Performance cars and racing cars use the second type, just watch any race and the sound of the breaks is obvious.

    Call Exxon Mobil, they can formulate a heat-resistant polymer adhesive go on the back of the pad to cushion it from the caliper pistons for your American customers. Mercedes solved it by MAKING THEM squeal but at a frequency that humans cant hear.

    High end Porsche sports car use Brembo brakes with Brembo pads similar to that of there sp compound in the aftermarket world that have there formula of sinter material in them to be able to achieve high friction durability and high operational temp limit sinter means there metallic material in the pads so you basically have metal composite pads scraping with cast iron metal rotor squeaking is inevitable my GR Supra for example when I change to mx72+ pads they squeak abit more and dust a little brown there semi metallic pads but they sure bite hard and super fade resistant.

  • @tomokokuroki2506
    @tomokokuroki2506 6 лет назад +1

    Doesnt the material comprising the brake pads cause squealing too?
    Ceramic pads are notorious for squealing and I assume Porsche is using ceramic pads on their high performance cars.

    whenever the brakes on my 991 carerra S start to squeal, i just rinse off the rotors and calipers with a garden hose/nozzle, and they are quiet again. repeat in a few weeks when they squeal again. i think brake dust has a lot to do with the squeal. i also found that this trick works better with hot brakes/rotors, maybe the steam cleaning really gets the dirt/dust off the rotors and pads better.

    In my experience, squeals happen when the brake pad material is too dense/hard. The material that Lexus/Toyota uses is softer, you can almost drive a screwdriver through it, and I never hear any squeals with genuine parts.

    • @robertwise690

      Dmitry L if they're hot they're not gonna squeal. Most Porsche owners are putt putt drivers with the ceramic brake option wondering why their shit squeals. It's because you drive it like you should own a Prius.

    • @lifehackertips

    • @n01928
      @n01928 6 лет назад +1

      It happens more on big brakes with multipiston setups. Even worse if you are on a more aggressive than stock pad and it's cold. It varies based on wear too. On my car they will start squeaking at ~3-4k miles and go away for a few thousand and come back a few times every now and then. Basically the only fix is to get heavy on the brakes. Once you go above %50 pedal it will stop.
