    So what do you guys think? Do you prefer the smaller size of the Batis or "no compromise" big size of the Sigma?

    • @Matti6950
      @Matti6950 4 года назад

      Well last year i was still fully into Nikon full frame realm, so the 40mm Sigma art was my wow lens i wanted to get. Otus sharpness and AF for 1250 euro (and wider, wich is a thing i like).
      But then came 24mm GM (a focal length i love, and i want to be ultra sharp), sigma 14-24mm F2.8 (e-mount). But even telelenses, a supposed mastery of F-mount (see 70-200mm FL ED), the Sony 100-400mm beats everyone, and not by small margin.
      And then... the sigma 35mm F1.2. Better mirrorless AF implementation, function button, -200 gram compared to 40mm F1.4 Fe art., better balanced. Bettter bokeh (not just wide open), only tiny bit less sharp corners (neglibable). Cameralabs infinity photos are amount best i've seen yet, and love the colours too. It's one of my next buys. Though the A7RIV soon will set my back a lot (my entry into Sony land). I use Sigma 35mm F1.4 art, love it, same for 50mm art (wich is kinda heavy but i dont mind). I carry Nikon d810+24-70mm VR (including hood, etc) all day = 2200 gram combo. A7RIV with sigma 40mm art is still less weight (2kg).
      Batis IS nice, but i prefer the 55mm F1.8 i think. I also like 35mm a lot more then 40mm. You can crop to 40mm, but not uncrop to 35mm. But 24mm GM has me the most temped : small, not all pricey, very good sharpness across frame, good bokeh, function button :D
      I keep forgetting lenses like the 105mm art, and 40mm art have E-mount versions. Some people like you keep reminding it for me. But now that Sigma is in the 'native' game, i think i'll try to buy those. Even the Sigma 45mm F2.8 seems very interesting to me (more so then batis) for less weight, yet good image quality ,features.

      @@Matti6950 You know when I got the 40mm Art replacing my Samyang 35mm 1.4, it was all happiness with much better IQ except that like you when switching back and forth checking the images, the 35mm focal length was still one I liked more than the 40mm. So you can imagine my happiness when Sigma came out with the 35mm 1.2 and the great bokeh and sharpness. Also AF is very accurate as you will see when I post my real-world test video.
      The 105mm I actually ended up buying one and selling my great copy of the Sigma 85mm Art. Something about the 105mm rendering the more I used it the more I fell in love with it.
      Thanks for sharing your experience! :)

      Hi Luis. Wonderful comparison video thanks for putting the time in making this. I just switched to a7r iii from the nikon d810 i had and am super excited to relieve some G.A.S. I had/have the sigma 40 1.4 and sigma 105 1.4. I fell in love with both for portrait and event type photography.
      I am very interested in the 35 1.2! It looks to be bit smaller and lighter than the 40 1.4 which is what's pushing me wanting to buy it real soon! Most likely this time with mirrorless going to skip the 40 1.4 and get the 35 1.2 +105 1.4 again in sony version. You definitely right about the 40. It's so well corrected and because of that it's a tank. Right now the mirorless lens world is about to explode. Rumors of sigma bringing 24-70 2.8, sony 100 1.4, another chinese brand 0.95 lens and sony now said they are going to make 1.2 lenses. This is going to be so sweet! 😁👍 Tamron has been making some decent stuff though they don't interest me as much as sigma does. They are more of a lighter more compromised lenses in a way 😁 I am so glad to finally have switched over to sony but right now i have no lenses (well i am using the commlite mf adapter with the zeiss milvus 25 1.4 zf.2). The GAS pressure has been going up!
      Looking forward to your 35 1.2 vs 40 1.4 video!

      @@Xetenor yes indeed the mirrorless world is very exciting right now! Yeah I am more into the Sigma no compromise camp vs the Tamron one even though they are doing great stuff too. Sadly I won't have a 40mm vs 35mm 1.2 video unless I can get Sigma to send me a loaner as I only had both lenses at the same time for like 2 days before I sold it. I do want to do that test as well as getting the Sigma 14-24 for testing.
      I am loving that 105mm 1.4 + 35mm 1.2 combo so I am sure you are going to be blown away!

Since you tested both the 35 1.2 and 40 1.4 from Sigma: It is safe to say the 35 1.2 has the better bokeh and color rendition? The shots from the 35 in the vampire video look really really cool.

    never could quite put my finger on the "zeiss pop" and not many reviewers that talk about it, have properly shown it. you don't talk about it (and have quite a different view on pop), but have shown it exceptionally well here haha. to my eyes the zeiss looks a lot more rounded and 3D, the sigma a lot flatter and as you said with more out of focus parts. recently bought a sigma for my fuji, might try it with a shimmer filter, to make it look a little more natural. thanks a lot for the great video!

    Batis could be a good all rounder lens for its light weight. At 40mm, Bohek is not the most important thing. Batis has T* coating and may have darker shadow which makes more contrast and clarity in images

    If Adorama spot on a 24 hr deal on this batis as they did yesterday 9 dec 2019 with the 85 (which I got) , I will grab one, as you say, small, light and it is a zeiss lens!. To be sincerely the smoothness of the background can be "touched" on Ps using Gaussian Blur , what I really will not do since only pixel peepers photographer will notice that difference, no even 1 person who is not a photographer will notice any difference.

    I owned the zeiss batis 40mm for a year now. I main reason why I sold it was the bokeh in outdoor situations. I can’t see any difference to the sigma 40mm 1.4 ? Are my eyes closed?

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  2 года назад +1

      If you want smoother bokeh I would suggest the sigma 35mm 1.2 instead. That was the main reason I swapped to it from the 40mm. The 40mm is very sharp across as per lens rental but bokeh smootheness is not is biggest strength

      Unfortunately I do not have the 40mm anymore and Sigma has not replied back to me after sending a 28mm for a test (which was faulty). But I much prefer the "3d pop" and smoother bokeh of the 35mm 1.2 personally. The 40mm was more clinically sharp away from the center so they both have their advantages

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад

      This actually varies between brands and models. For example the sigma 135mm art is actually a little bit longer than the 135mm GM when I tested them. Companies always seem to have some flexibility when it comes to that just like they do with softboxes sizes and let's not forget the dreaded focus breathing 😁

    I personally think that on this particular review we have 2 very sharp lenses, your review is good but focus too much in showing the difference in between f1.2 and f2 which is with all the respects irrelevant, bokeh is not everyone’s taste and is overrated in my opinion, this review took 18min and you mention the size couple of times but not the weight on sigma is 1.200g or 42.3 oz that’s is the weight of 24-70 f2.8 full frame and on a prime that’s kind of crazy, and the Zeiss is 361g or 22.73 oz the colours on the Zeiss are better and I can see your point that the sigma has a bit more of definition but not by much to be honest and nothing that you can not make better in post production and both will look the same with one click, personally I think batís is a better choice but you can’t argue both are good lenses.

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад +7

      Hello,
      Well, the way I see it, if you are testing 1.4 lens (not 1.2) vs a 2.0 lens I need to show exactly that that 1.4 is giving you over the 2.0 so the viewer can determine if its worth the extra weight and size penalty. Bokeh is not only smoother but cleaner on the Sigma which is part of the image depending on your composition and again, for people interested in this 1.4 lens, I am sure bokeh is one factor they want to look at. Regarding the Weight..if I missed it, that is fine, specs are easy to find online. I am trying to show the things paper specs do not tell you, like sharpness and how it translates on a real world photo, subject isolation, color, etc. I think I was very fair on my assessment of what I am seeing but like I said at the start, I am providing the images so each person can download and come to their own conclusions as we are all different with different needs.
      Now again it comes to each user having different needs. For you the size and weight is crazy vs a 2.8 zoom, for others like me, what a fast prime gives me is completely different than what a 2.8 zoom can give me. Also when you say that the colors on the Zeiss are better..well that is just a matter of taste exactly as you said about Bokeh for example.
      Thanks for your comment.
