    I remember watching the series as a teenager, and when I saw Yoko Shimada as Mariko, she took my breath away. She was so elegant, graceful, and lovely. When I heard that she had passed away, part of my youth died with her. The whole production was just magical.

      I understand the attitude of the Japanese back in the 16th Century.When they faced people from other countries far far away.And many of them behaved not well.Thats why the Japanese tought they’re like Barbarians.Because the people of Japan back then where so elegant and well behaved.

      Excellent comment, Tee2008j-San! So many men have had crushes on Yoko Shimada (Mariko-San) and Hiromi Senno (Fujiko-San). Yes, the novel gives so much more detail in those 1200 pages, but what wonderful A-Class Actors and Actresses we were privileged to watch, and endear the Japanese culture and people, as we watched. I had no idea about the drama surrounding Yoko Shimada’s casting. She was so perfect for the role I had thought she, like Mifune had been identified and cast early. I’d read the book before the series came out and she perfectly captured the beauty and grace of Mariko. In the series she was hypnotic, you could t take your eyes off her.

    There aren't many stories more tragic than the death of Yoko Shimada, who died destitute and alone in a hospital, without a single relative or friend coming forward to claim her. The cremation was ultimately taken care of by the state at their expense, and eventually an acquaintance claimed the ashes and placed them alongside Miss Shamada - San's mother. RIP

    Yoko Shimada is single-handedly the origin point for my fascination and love of Japan and Japanese historical culture.

    Today I learned that, all of characters that translated for Blackthrone's actors only spoke one language, and the actors whose characters only spoke one language could actually speak both lol

    Selection of a cast was much better as current 24 one. All roles. Pity, that Sean Connery refused a Blackthorne role. He had looked as a tough, rough guy, fit for a pilot job in 1600.. Neverthelles R Chamberlain was magnificient. Pity he did not narrated audiobook Shogun. They did not comprehend this time a power of a word, a popularity of audiobooks.

    Me parece un documento muy interesante relatando el proceso de eleccion de cada personaje y tambien por la informacion que aporta sobre la trayectoria de los actores secundarios que muchas veces se desconoce y eran realmente buenos.

    I wonder who the singer they wanted to originally cast for the role of Mariko?

      @theshogunchannel  4 месяца назад +1

      Hai, ALwinDigital-San. I have often wondered that myself. I was hoping that they were going to reveal who she was. How different Shogun 1980 would have been, had they cast a different woman for Mariko, and Sean Connery for Blackthorne. Even so, I love Shogun 1980, and I think the cast was brilliant. Excellent question, and comments, as always. Domo Arigatou Gozaimashita, Tomodachi. 👍🏆
