I learned that one way to be that is to never treat all of the salsa steps with marching action. Yes, mark the steps in rhythm and on the beat, whether you doing ON 1, ON 2, or ON 3 salsa, but don't be obsessed with being like marching in a parade when you do salsa.
Using marching action way too much distracts from the styling and the technique of salsa, and dancers and observers will disparage you as more of a marching band marcher than a "salsero/a" (or salsa dancer) - which is not only not good - but close to the point that you are branded as "contemptible." If that happens to you, you oughta kick yourself out of the social salsa dance floor for the rest of the night. Not fun, and as you shame yourself all the way home, you will cry so much you won't even think about saying "Weepa!" until tomorrow - but don't count on it.
The way to avoid being badly branded in your foot actions is to mostly think of keeping your whole foot close to the ground, whether you change foot directions or you step in place (like in the "rocks"). Save the "marching crap" in salsa for a few salsa shines that require you to do your, say, leg lift into a tornado spin, etc., especially if you are doing solo salsa shine work with your partner in no-contact hold. In the "pachanga swivels", which are common in Colombian salsa, you can kick high on the penultimate beats to the strong beat with your legs (for example, the kicks happening on "4" on "on 1" salsa), which is the exception to the "no march action" rule in salsa.

    Nice topic, thank you.
Wouldn't be great to make a video about how one dancer from salsa on 1 can dance on 2?
Really confusing in my case, even if I listen and dance salsa for years.
Can't follow the rhythm on 2.

I already have seen them and more than two times but with real music is difficult to follow the rhythm on 2.
I think you have to train a lot your listening if you 're not a musician : P
Thank you very much for your reply : )
