Ben has a point here, on court interviews, specially during this AO have been quite negative, questions are most of the time stupid or trying to get players to say something that will create controversy.
Have you seen the post match interviews at the US Open? They are equally embarrassing. Tennis commentators and so called "journalists" are in the main, ignorant, insulting and completely insensitive to players' feelings post matches. As an aside, both Channels 7 and 9, both of which have covered the tennis in Australia are pathetic. ESPN, CNN and Fox have equally been guilty of it in the UD. ESPN hiring Nick Kyrgios is an example of poor judgement - why? Because he is a brat and will attract viewers? That's the only reason I can think why they did it. All these media companies need to take a close hard look at themselves.
Meaning tennis matches are boring and audience wants more. Shelton being top20 should know his main purpose is to entertain. If that means to answer stupid questions, than answer stupid questions. Audience is stupid but pays tickets and pays him. He's paid emough to know that tennis ball slapping is just half of the story. Other half is dealing with stupid questions. He can always quit tennis and get less stressful job.
He is absolutely correct, clearly the commentators have their favorites, and it is obvious. I don't think they should have an opinion one way or the other. Leave the answers to the press conference. Stop sending negative vibes to some players and hyping up others. You guys are biased, and it is clear. The way you scrutinize Carlos is absurd. He is a well-mannered kid still a work in progress. And cut out all of the podcasts for profit without the player's consent. We are fed up with it as their fans.
@ronanrogers4127 taking someone's comments as literally as possible just to respond negatively is peak antisocial behavior. We all understand what he is saying
Love Ben Shelton statement great for tennis we should be supporting these players out there leave the negative and focus on the positive they train hard and they deserve respect.
Thanks for having the integrity in sharing this TC. Cheers Ben for speaking truth! There's an elephant in the room as well in which they don't want to touch.
Another vid had aussie panel interviewing Louise Fleming (hoping I have the name correct). They turned off comments, which is fine, go Australia. I think Ben's post match interview and his responses are super well stated, very articulate in fact. The interviewers need to take pause for a minute, and after the adrenalin of a match, ask technical questions about the match, stay out of personal or sideline stuff. But here's the catch, they can't ask technical questions because they don't really understand tennis, playing at a high level, or anything along those lines. A few do of course, but most don't. Taking Aussie humor aside, another issue is what is up with this ongoing have to interview every person after every winning match on the court, then off the court, half of which are totally stupid question anyway, how does this move the bar for us viewers at home? For those of us that play a tennis regularly, and for those that really play the game at a high level, last thing I want to be asked after a win or a loss is the age of my opponent, who gives a rip about that. One last thing too, the first vid I mentioned, the panel is laughing about players making $50 million and they should just buckle up over it. News flash, most players LOSE money every year playing. The handful at the top of the game, in relative terms, make a great living, but certainly at a high price of sacrifice. The 100th ranked person the world, most likely is losing money to be that and if you compare that to the 100th ranked CEO in the world, tennis is a labor of love. Tennis Australia, come on now, get your head screwed on straight, we don't want cheeky, just chill out a bit, the players will chill out a bit, and us viewers, will get a better product in the end.
People can toss out the "shut up you whiny rich kid" argument every time a player raises these points, but if you do, you're just outing yourself as unable to prove them wrong. He's right, and the reason they get so easily riled by the press or by chair umpires making crap calls is that these athletes work every day of their lives from the time they are pre-pubescent, for years on end, to get to this level. When they finally do, they are faced with stakes and swings unlike any other sport: the difference between a huge pay day and HALF that payday can be as small as a millimeter, and huge percentages of that have to go to multiple gov't tax collectors, agents, managers, and coaches, whose travel and lodging they also foot the bill for. Meanwhile, reporters can write the most ludicrous characterizations of the players, chairs can make objectively crap call after objectively crap call, and they still get their salary/fee. But a player has the audacity to *gasp* get a little pissed or not feel like silently kow towing and they have to worry about a pay cut/fine? Meanwhile they're sacrifcing their bodies for the sake of our entertainment. Poor sportsmanship is one thing, but that's about what two people who KNOW what the other has been through owe each other. I really don't think players owe the press much at all, and with the increasingly easy access fans have to players via social media, traditional media better watch how they treat these guys or they'll be out of a job pretty soon.
Thanks for taking the time to say it thoroughly and completely. This is what is wrong with people who occasionally watch tennis or who project their own inadequacy onto these players.
Well hes maturing and good to see. I maintained that his game was good and i would give him the benefit of the doubt for his arrogance a couple of years ago to his youthful exuberance. But good to see him maturing.
seeing a lot of americans have the sentiment online lately and i think it just goes against australian expression, we don't care for ego, we make fun of anyone, learn to laugh at yourself if you want to get along with us, we are not going to walk on eggshells around you
Correct, the double standard here is that you can criticize Aussie media, specifically the cultural differences in their journalistic approach, but you won’t hack it when wetheim, roddick, tennis channel or ESPN inject their own personalities into their media training. The aussies obviously aren’t having a go here, so naturally international player sensitivities are high
So glad the players are finally calling out the AO broadcasters. I foresee some boycotting of the AO next year, especially since it's so expensive and difficult for the players to get to Australia. This is the worst I've seen in 40+ years of playing/watching tennis.
Funny, then, that most (all) of the people conducting the post-match on-court interviews are ex-players. I personally welcome the introduction of humour into these interviews. Questions like "How does it feel to be in the 4th round at a grand slam tournament for the first time?" are a complete waste of time.
I immigrated to Australia when I was 14, I'm now 50. It takes awhile to get used to the Australian sense of humour, I'm not saying that the Australian broadcasters were right, they definitely crossed the line with Novak. I'm not familiar with the other instances Ben quoted.
Ben 💯 right, but if you listen to the Aussie networks, they reckon international players are crybabies. If you think I'm joking, then go check The Project. TBH, I'm beginning to think these Aussies are a bunch of clowns who can't fathom that they're being abusive. Instead of reflecting on their behavior, they would rather resort to gaslighting. Good luck in the semis, I will be pulling for you mate 🎾
@ I’m defending them from the angle that none of them meant to be malicious. I agree that more jokes than usual have fallen flat and occasionally the interviewer was totally incompetent.
The comments on Novak was completely malicious. I haven't watched the other interviews but I'll believe Ben on this. Even indian cricket players and fans faced the same racist or really bad comments veiled as "humour" in Australia.
Not one of those incidents he spoke of was related to race. I don't get it and I like Ben but I don't see how he came to the racial aspect regarding Gael. My first thought would be age not race! But maybe I'm missing something. 😢
@godz4ever404 on the surface, they make it seem like it's age, but in reality it's a race thing. It's the subtlety in which they do it and the passive aggressiveness. Only obvious case was the channel 9 reporter who said to kick novak out. Like he's not even indigenous to au himself and wants to kick others out. Talk about colonialism
Good point there. I am just guessing here, maybe Australian humor is like this? I don't know. Even the level of questions and spoken English during press conference is ridiculous at time.
I guess you cannot even imagine how much effort it takes to be a top player in tennis. You literally need to grind and make so many sacrifices in life. People are just dropping their college just to pursue their tennis career. Some People travel all year alone without seeing their families for a long time.
Thick skin? So you think people should just listen to any BS for no reason? They work incredibly hard to get to where they are and reap the rewards for it. I'm sure even though you might not have achieved jack in life, you'll feel bad if someone makes unnecessary comments.
Funny how he sees colour in a perfectly innocent comment. Novak has a right to be miffed but Shelton is simply jumping on a bandwagon. In a couple years time he'll be begging for commentator work
Honestly who would have thought that Ben would turn out to be a bit of a cry baby, these interviews however how awkward and stupid they are, are actually entertaining.. After all you are hitting a green fluffy ball with a racquet on the ground and people are paying to watch you do that. It's tiring to see the same interviews, how do you feel, how did you play out there, how do you feel about your next opponent. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Its refreshing to see some funny interviews trying to get a reaction...
Funny reaction about someone else being called your “dad “ just because they are black as well? No you sound stupid. Bringing in race in the interview was dumb and Ben has every right to say something!

I'll touch it but I'm not seeing this elephant! Lol. Please share. What am I missing?
WOW!! Well done Ben. Very proud. Call it out for what it is. Time to get new interviewers.
Funny to see Wertheim opine on this topic, considering the crap he said about Krecjikova a couple of months back.
He has a history of being that person, that interviewer trying to center themselves. He is the last person that should be commenting.
In his defense he wasn't broadcasting. The footage should have not being public. We all say crap from to time. Just saying. Not a big issue really
At least he admitted his mistake, apologized and tried to rectify. Doesn't make it right.

good on Ben for calling it out.
