I START BY GETTING AN MPK49, 3 -DJ PRO!- LAPTOP STANDS, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT I HAVE AN APC40, THE LAPTOP, AND AN MPD 32. I BUILT A CUSTOM CASE FOR THE MIXER AND TURNTABLES. THE UPPERDECK- FROM RIGHT TO LEFT, AN ST-150, AN LPD8, THE TTM, AN LPD8, AND AN ST-150, AND 2 DICERS RIGHT UNDER THE LPD8'S.
THE LOWER DECK-FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, AN APC20, AN MPK MINI, AND AN APC 20, ALL WITH 3 FOUR PORT USB HUBS. AND THE MPD32 CONNECTED TO THE MBOX VIA MIDI. AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT THEY ALL SERVE A PURPOSE!

Passionate responses. Same vibe as vinyl vs CDs.
I own both, using a xone 4D as my interface(prev audio8) for traktor and I recently purchased the SL 4(prev SL 3) to aid in running a club. Everyone is using Serato. In the states it is the standard, but thats changing since TSP2 came out and it being known that the rest of the world prefers Traktor is making people think twice. But I sold my SL 3 and payed extra so djs can swap without pulling wires, and that's so invaluable in a live performan

3:24, man this video is 6 years old and Serato still hasn't fixed that problem. My setup is pretty much all new this year, latest version of Serato, and it still moves away from the sound when I'm holding the record in place.

I trust Qbert because he's one of the most talented scratch DJs on earth. He's also a bit more mature than most of the not so great DJs out there. Most of the not so greats have to boast themselves and talk rubbish to look big. Surprise, that makes you look quite small.

I actually started with MAudio Torq and it did its job for me for a long time, although it has issues its worth the price and their upgrade improved alot. Ive used serato in clubs and do not like its software layout and it lagged. Traktor Scratch Pro has been the way to go. Im all about Native Instruments gear in general

good job Q !! pretty much what I expected.. I'm using serato, for various reasons, but the most important is, that 99% of the club djs over here use it. so it makes spinning in clubs easier because you can use somebody else's serato box and won't have too change the dvs system all the time. don't know about the US club djs though....

I've never used Traktor for timecode but it is a powerful software. I used to use it before I got decks, to mess around and learn on the PC. It has many settings and options, so it can be a bit daunting at first. You also need to spend a bunch of time configuring it properly - turn off autogain, limiter etc etc. I personally bought Serato SL1 (and then upgraded to SL3 when it came out) as I found the Serato Scratch Live software my favourite to use for DVS, back in 2006-2008 anyway. I'm not sure if the issue presented here with Serato still exists on the newest hardware and software versions, but I have my own reasons to avoid using any newer version of the software other than Serato Scratch Live 2.5.0. For preparing and planning your set, Serato DJ Pro is the best, alongside Rekordbox, allowing users to do a 'practice mode' in the free software. However the biggest issue I've ever found with Serato DJ/DJ Pro is one of audio quality. Some people who have compared the signals say that Serato DJ Pro is the best quality, with Scratch Live second and Serato DJ third. However I still think Serato Scratch Live is the best quality for one very simple reason. Try this test: Install Serato DJ (you need to remove Serato DJ Pro or overwrite it to make it work) and try playing a track that dips into the red. Now, I can't evern remember if offline/practice mode even lets you hear the actual sound quality so you may need to have actual hardware or controller that works with all three software to test with. So run a track into 1 or 2 bars of red in SDJ and record your mixer output. You should find that any time you hit even a single red bar internally in the software, your mixer output should have a 'treble tear' noise. A grating scratching sound. Now overwrite your installation with Serato DJ Pro. Try the test again. Notice now the clipping sounds like a 'click pop'. This isn't terrible but it's not good. It sounds kind of like a vinyl pop, but if you pay attention you can tell it's a digital clip 'click'. Now, try loading and doing the same test in Serato Scratch Live. Notice anything different? A warm, analog-ish saturation distortion when you reach into the red. Now, you should avoid the red at all costs, internally and on a mixer. Some people think red=good but red=VERY NOT GOOD. But all the new electronic tracks are mostly mastered with no dynamics, high RMS and constantly peaking around near 0dB. So every single track you load into any version of Serato needs to have its gain reduced, unless it's mastered very gently and with dynamics. Even then you might see a little red light pop. If you were using Serato Scratch Live, that little red light pop once per track for say 100ms or something, won't sound bad at all. On SDJ/SDJP? It will make your set sound crap. Example? I set the first track in this mix to hit the first red bars in Serato DJ Pro, and check out the click pops every few seconds www.mixcloud.com/SubterfugeSeminars/ninja-gaijin-dj-set-at-axed-5-hardcore-25-apr-2019

I have Traktor Scratch Pro and SSL. I use the Rane TTM57sl with SSL. Tractor is alot easier to use, beatmatch, and set cues. Tractor has more to offer for production ans midi mapping. I love SSL to death but I use Traktor now to and im pleased. Tractor for electronic stuff and SSL for hip hop is what I do. For scratching I have a pretty good vinyl collection and the scratchy seal records are the ish. Well, Q, you are the man and will always be remebered as a DJ icon. The master has spoken. Word!

Its basicly an oversimplified DJ software. You can do the basic stuff with it like beat matching and such but thats about it. Effects and such on for example Traktor Pro is much butter, And you can program it.Traktor also supports almost every midi controllers, dj controllers and so on.With VDJ you got more limited choices. You can save every setting and just one click to get it back if you are doing a live set. Everything is just quality. Ive never used Serato myself so ask someone else about it

QBert. I'm a turntablist. I have been watching your videos going back to the Shiggar Fraggar show. I still have most of them...all on VHS. I am a REAL fan. I picked up scratching because of you and the Skratch Picklz. I got to be pretty decent at scratching, but a few years ago I had to sell my tables and mixer to pay the bills. I had the newer Technics with the black sparkle finish. Technics as you know stopped making tables just after I did this. Im such a dummy but I did what I had to do. They would be priceless if I still had them today. Anyhow, I still have my records, but am lacking a mixer and a table. I only need 1 table, as I only do scratching, and I can mix in a beat digitally. I thought it might be worth asking if you had a table and a mixer that are decent enough for scratching that you might sell me for a price I can afford. I am not trying to scam you or get something for nothing. I am a genuine far of yours, who has owned and watched over 20 of you earliest and best videos, and have advertised you to all of my friends for over 10 years. I am having a hard time right now, girlfriend just had surgery, and I just lost my job. I can only imagine that joy that being able to scratch again could bring back into my life, but the prices for a table and a mixer have made this impossible for me. I used to used Technics 1200s and 1210s and Vestax 05 pro, 07 pro...These are what I am familiar with, but I would take whatever you have it you think it is decent for scratching.
I know you are not a turntable dealer, and that this is not appropriate. But I am desperate to scratch again, and felt it was worth the time to write this. I live in the Bay Area.

check out the new Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable. had an opportunity to do a side by side comparison with the Technics SL1210 Mk5 & couldn't tell the difference.

    • @DJEmirMixtapes
      @DJEmirMixtapes 9 лет назад +1

+m3zza9 I found in the past a few turntables that compared to the Technics 1200 the only thing I always found that really separated them apart however was the ability of Technics to reduce rumble (noise produced from huge bass) in a loud setting such as a nightclub. This is due to the weight of the Technics and the huge Rubberized bottom and rubberized Platter. I once had to DJ on One Technics Turntable and One Stanton with normal vinyl because that is what the club had. I didn't know that was what they had and it was the very first time I ever experienced anything other than a Technics turntable at a club. While they felt the same, I ended up having to lower the overall volume because the Stanton kept getting feedback from the Bass when pumped up. It sucked. I hear the PLX-000 has a slightly better noise reduction similar to Technics but that is something that also needs to be tested side by side not just in a studio setting or basement setting but at the club.

    • @DJEmirMixtapes
      @DJEmirMixtapes 9 лет назад

+MrRugDoctor78 You could check craigslist over and over til you find someone else that is also desperately selling their tables... my friend bought 2 Technics 1210 M5Gs for $500 Total and the guy for some reason through in an Allen heath mixer and a self powered speaker as well. he just wanted to buy a snowboard bad. I think he wanted a little more at first probably closer to $1000 but my friend said I have CASH now. He's a talker I guess and convinced him crazy I've been hoping to find the same or at least 2 for $1000 for a while but you may be able to eventually find a semi good deal perhaps 2 for $1500 etc... just depends on the situation.

the HI-FI RESAMPLE button on serato was probably off which is why the sound was a little watery. I've never had any problems if HI-FI Resample is on, even at ludacris slow speeds. As for the tapping, everyone has problems say if the bass/noise is vibrating the needle, no matter what interface. PROPS Q!!!!!

I've been using Torq for about 3 years now, and i have to say when Torq 2.0.3 was released the audio quality increased and the sticker drift is almost a thing of the past, i love the effects and the custom mapping that you can apply to it. My only gripe is the fact that the samples can only be played through one channel and not mixed like Serato, but ive never had a crash caused by the software (old WD hardware was a b***h to vibrations) but overall Torq is a major competitor

I've tried traktor scratch duo and compared it to serato and found that during a power down serato would crap out towards the end (gergling sound). they are basically the same, just one offers features the other doesn't. It's all personal preference. If you're going to be a club dj, serato is the way to go as it is the standard installation at most clubs

Good vid on comparisons. After having watched one of your other you tube videos, I went out and purchased a Numark DJ controller. Nothing fancy, but I am very curious and interested in what you do. The last time I saw or heard of DJ scratching was when I watched the movie “Breaking” when I was a kid. At 50, it’s kinda late for me to be getting interested in this, or not 😏

@ALLK1LL3RN0F1LLER, the mixer comes with Traktor 3 LE which is a demo of Traktor Pro, you should get it, the effects in Traktor are awesome, I use them, more then the DDM 4000 effects, also for looping, setting cue points, Traktor is awesome, makes things much easier. People need to understand that Traktor or Serato don't make you a good DJ, just makes it easier. You still need to know what to mix and how. Most haters never DJed, they never lugged crates around.

If you calibrate the serato one properly then the drift issue will stop. Also if you turn off hi-fi resampling mode and enable the vinyl distortion mode it sounds better at super slow speeds.

Thanks for this video. It's the best comparison I've seen on the net.
I personally prefer Traktor Scratch, which is why I bought it over Serato. It sounds that bit cleaner and the posibilities with regards to effects, samples and loops etc. are endless. I think a lot of Pro DJs go for Serato in the same way that they go for 1200/1210s: it's more established and has proven reliability. As Q says though, they're both great systems to use andeach have their own advantages.

Is there a difference with asolute vs relative? Traktor's signal is higher frequency (2000 vs 1000 hz) so in relative mode should be more detailed. Serato might be better in absolute mode though. It encodes position in a clever way that lets it detect position more quickly.

I've just put Traktor on for a go on the decks and wondered something about this video: What latency and sample rate do you use? Also, briefly, how do you think the feel compares to 'proper' vinyl? I have mine set to 1.5 ms and still think vinyl feels much better. I suppose it doesn't help that the Traktor vinyl -I have the clear ones- is a bit heavier than a proper scratch vinyl.

I use Serato with a Rane TTM56s and it's really cool to use. I really like it. Maybe you prefere traktor because you're a traktor guy. I know I'm a Rane guy !

Traktor and Serato in the year of 2013 still have cpu and usb powered stability issues. But Serato is still a little bit more stable then Traktor on some issues. Rane has way better response to questions but long wait for updates. Native Instruments responds weeks later but have a flash of updates back to back when they are ready to do so.
For Scratch Turntablism,Cdj ,Club Dj's. Serato
    For Controller,Club,Techno,Dance,Dj's. Traktor.
This is based off of my use of both of these products.

Well with the covers on, it's rather tough to figure out. . .the only way was the pitch lock on the M3D.
It could be M5's though, I didn't see a silver case under above that cover for tables
    They aren't M5G's though. . .That's for sure. .

@MrPopinjay okay thats true, but i think it also applies to other systems +serato has a special licensed noise signal on his vinyls. but i do not want to distract anybody from buying anything just please never buy stuff because of its commercials. find your best solution always on your own. anyway i liked that xwax idea pretty much, but i will stick with the official software

(Stating the obvious for some) With the whole digital sound issue with serato and other types of time code scratching it would be ideal to rip the original vinyl in to a wave file at 24bit or higher and refresh at 96khz or higher to help eliminate part of the digital sound at slow speeds but hey most people wouldn't notice any way but I prefer buy vinyl but most dub plates are poor quality in sound

i know with traktor you can have mutliple virtual turntables (i've heard it's up to 99 separate active channels); Virtual DJ/NumarkCue is the same - does Serato have this function?

Nice vid. I use Serato and love it but must admit that i've noticed it bugging out ever so slightly when I alter the speed too much but that may be more to do with me having the key lock on.

    Hello Qbert,
I would like to see someone do the following demos if possible:-
Numark PT-01 with 7" dvs control vinyl * 2 (one left deck A & one right deck B)
    With either:-
Raiden/Jesse Dean/Stokyo Kutter/Frisk Fader (mounted on top of and connected to the)
    Novation Audiohub 2*4 Audio Interface
    Reloop Neon (midi mapped)
Virtual DJ 8 Pro Timecode/Cross DJ/Rekordbox DJ DVS
    Or Swap Audio Interface to:-
Denon DS-1 to use with Serato DVS setup
NI Traktor Scratch A6 for Traktor Scratch DVS and Traktor Pro setup
Or Swap Both Audio Interface and Crossfader to:-
Akai AMX for Serato DVS setup
NI Traktor Kontrol Z1 for Traktor Pro setup
(unless there is a Traktor Scratch DVS work around similar to the way DJ Player Pro works on iOS)
Reloop Mixtour for Virtual DJ 8 Pro Timecode/Cross DJ/Rekordbox DJ DVS
Add On Controllers (to be midi mapped to work with all of these DJ software programs):-
Akai AFX or Reloop Neon for Serato SP6/flip
    NI Traktor Kontrol D2 for Traktor Pro - FX/Flux/Loops/Hot Cues/Remix Decks/Stems
    (to be used with a Raiden/Jesse Dean/Stokyo Kutter/Frisk Fader)
mounted on top of and connected to the Novation Audiohub 2*4 Audio Interface
(and hopefully there is a Traktor Scratch DVS work around similar to the way DJ Player Pro works on iOS)
Novation Circuit or Novation Launchpad Mk2 RGB or Novation Launchpad Pro
    NI Maschine Jam
(A-H buttons could be used to toggle channel on/off & the Jam could have buttons midi mapped as switches to change the parameters of what the 8 touch strips control, eg:- deck volume, fx level, etc)
Reloop Neon (Serato Official Accessory - Midi Mapped to work the same with the other software)
    Software Integration:-
Ableton Live 9 & Ableton Link
    Thoughts???

I feel there’s a market for “scratch” DJs and beatmatching DJs which are more prominent in the club scenes, in which the only real application for vinyl is a spinback once a track ends. That said, I would love to get a comparison on the BPM engines of four major DJ programs: Serato, Traktor, Virtual DJ, and my favorite (and most underrated) M-Audio Torq.

  • @JohnHam
    @JohnHam 13 лет назад +1

Serato and Ableton through The Bridge is what I want right now.

  • @Rhekluse
    @Rhekluse 14 лет назад

I use Ableton Live, so for me Serato was the obvious choice.
Ableton Live + Rane Serato = The Bridge.
    - FX and clip launching from Ableton to Serato
    - Liveset/Mixtape recording from Serato.to Ableton
Traktor works well for live mixing with syncing ability and better FX, not to mention 4 decks, but I needed one of these to work with my DAW
Both are solid additions to ones setup, but you will have to decide for yourself. Its not which is better, but which is better for your needs.

im looking to get into the dj game, and as far as equipment goes I like the ttm 57 sl mixer because it comes with serato and the mixer controls all aspects of serato without having to touch the computer. is there a mixer out there for traktor that does the same thing as far as having all the program controls on the mixer itself?

  • @AlexosMusic
