Any software is fine as long as you rock the crowd.

I've used all of these softwares. I started with serato. In the end virtual is the most professional software package I've used. The options and tweaks are unlimited. You can change the skins if it look "kiddie" to you. There is so much more you're able to do with virtual dj that can't be done in serato.

+Gerald skyers It has a lot of features indeed! It's a bit weird that people still look at VDJ as "beginner" software, but I guess it's hard to beat that reputation.
But that's why everyone should use what they feel is best for them and not worry about what other DJs think

That's exactly my point. It's about generations. I've had a few older guys try out VDJ on my DDJ-SZ and after they got the feel they loved it. You can actually customize things a lot more than Serato allows. I've used Serato since I started but when VDJ came packaged with the SZ there was no turning back for me.

I use VDJ and it's trivial to turn all the assistances completely off. I go as far as remapping my controller sync button to the vinyl brake effect. The ability to completely remap your controller is one of the coolest aspects of VDJ. I tried Traktor for a month last year and felt that it was way more constricting as I couldn't seem to turn off all of the aids (which are useless to anyone mixing funk, rap and breaks). After realizing I was failing in trying to turn Traktor into VDJ, I went back to VDJ and never looked back. 8 just came out and it's pretty dope. Keep making videos! I'm a big fan.

I happen to be a beginner DJ and the one thing I have be drilled is the art of beat matching. I happen to use Virtual DJ with my WEGO4. I find it very user friendly but don't get it twisted. I happen to be a blogger and host of a House music online station. Trust me, beat matching is the #1 function for House Music DJs. I am glad I tuned in this show.

Software is Software and at the end its the DJ with the skill that matters. Plugins and effects are there to improve your mix, to give it your personal taste. People fight over Serato,Traktor, and Virtual DJ all the time. All i can say is. Software wont get you Scratching in a second or give you the skill to make a good mix. Talent is the brain for these programs, and i belive that people shouldnt get put down for wat they use, or if its Generation Standard or not. Focus on wat being a DJ really is and wats needed to be a DJ. Its all about the talent guys. So have fun with wat your good at :) and appreciate the Art we all love

I have been using PCDJ (first RED, then FX, now DEX) since 1999. My goal when I started using a computer to DJ was to make what I carry to gigs as small as possible. I discovered that I not only did not need to carry crates of records, I did not even need the turntables. To this day I still just use a Laptop with no turntables and not even with a controller. PCDJ is now pushing their DEX3 product which is making me look at other software. This video and all the comments is making me lean towards getting a controller with Virtual DJ. Thanks for the video and I am Looking forward to the next one.

I like that VDJ comes with video mixing natively, it's a extra $200 with Serato and only a couple mixers work with it.

I didn't watch the whole video but feel I need to comment on VDJ.
One BIG advantage of VDJ is that the look of the software is not fixed, like Serato software or Traktor.
If you don't like how VDJ looks "out of the box" then there are hundreds of skins available that can make it look the way you want. You're not stuck with just one GUI. It doesn't have to "look like a toy" as some people say.
There's also a lot going on behind the scenes that isn't necessarily available on the default skin. Other skins have functions that the default one doesn't have. You can also assign functions to buttons and knobs on your controller to do things that are not accessible on some skins.

I have been using Virtual Dj for a while - about 4 years. i just started using Serato a year ago. Serato is so easy to use. its easier than VDJ. I know everything about Virtual Dj. Virtual Dj does everything u can think of whether your a, Pro or Beginner Dj. I scratch with it, mix , live remixing, mixtapes, beatmatch, Vdj is a very good software.

I've used Virtual DJ since since before Version 1, when it was still Atomix mp3. At that time my DJ friends were still messing around with an old software called virtual turntables and others like BPM and PCDJ. Virtual dj however, has improved a lot throughout the years. But, as most have indicated, it is geared toward ease of use and there's a lot of automation for the beginner DJ.
To be honest. I've never felt like a "Pro" when using virtual Dj at serious gigs, especially when other veteran djs walk up and check out what you're using/doing. VDJ users simply don't get the respect from other DJS right off the bat. They only change their opinion when they listen to how you mix, select, manipulate the music, and "build a vibe", as we say in the caribbean community. Making the switch to Serato this week and it was about time.
TRAKTOR........................I've bought and used the software. Or it was bundled with a previous controller, I should say. I've tried every couple of years to jump on the traktor bandwagon, I just can't. Everything is way too complicated. From navigating folders, to adding folders, creating playlists, using and manipulating samples, audio configuration. Everything is a hassle in my opinion so for now. until they decide to make things a bit more plug and play, they can stay all the way over there with that .. I recommend VDJ to home DJs and "I deejay for the family" Djs.. intermediate gigging and working PROs should look into investing in serato and Traktor If you can stomach the pain of setting it up

+SwoSiah L (swO Beatz) I understand what you mean. Traktor is high quality DJ software, but I didn't like all the things I had to go through and set up before I could begin ;)
I'm playing with Traktor this weekend (at home) for a review (NI S5) so let's see if it feels different since the last time I tried it :)

my 2 cents. i started with vdj just because i didnt know what eles to use and yes used the synk function at first and worked on my song selection part of djing. after awhile i decided to learn properly and yes learnt how to beatmatch properly. my dj coach taught me on seratto and he wanted me to switch over but to be honest i liked vdj much better its just a straight better program to use. more functions, custamizable, many features in it.. vdj is plug and play and has many different skins so you can change the look. no i am not trying to sell you on vdj i believe use what you are comfortable with but i am tired of people saying vdj is just for beginners esspecially since i am hearing of serrato users switching to vdj right now.

First and foremost thank you for being professional about this!! A lot of people will be biased and honestly it really just does come down to a matter of preference. That being said I used both Serato and Virtual DJ. I have to say after a few years I'm hooked on Virtual DJ and I'll explain why. Virtual DJ Evolves with you....meaning when you can think of specific features or ways to improve upon the software its an actual person on the other end reading and dissecting your suggestions or whatever. I play live a lot and whether I used timecodes or I use a midi controller my performance is always outstanding and sound quality is always on point. That being said the older version which was Virtual DJ 7 that was what was available when this video was made. 8.2.....think about it for a second....8.2. All this means is steady improvement. Back then they started off with way too much. Now its refined. Timecodes don't skip out at all. I use a DJM-900 NXS2 as a controller and technics 1210's for turntables. The whole night I don't have any problems with my software or hardware. I'd say for those having doubts just be mindful that this software always and I mean always has improvements to be made no matter who makes it. Once again it all comes down to what works for you! For me it just turns out that VDJ 8.2 was better than I thought it was. Check out the pitch lock feature if you download it. I know Serato/SL doesn't have this.

    Greetings DJ TLM TV:
    Greetings Everyone Else:
Sorry for the long post but I'm an older DJ that sees the big picture that I want to share.
Thumbs up to DJ TLM for doing a relatively fair job at re-sparking a heated subject.
Direct to the subject from the point of view of a person who started DJing in the late 80s, the most important thing is just to be honest. This thread doesn't have as much "Ra Ra Ra" cheerleading as many others and this is a good thing.
Some Facts based on the International Dance Music Awards (Best DJ Software category):
    2014 Winner: Virtual DJ Pro
    2013 Winner: Virtual DJ Pro
    2012 Winner: Traktor Pro 2
    2011 Winner: Traktor Scratch Pro
    2010 Winner: Virtual DJ Pro
    2009 Winner: Traktor Pro
    2008 Winner: Ableton Live 7.0
The International Dance Music Awards is an open competition. The bias is that it is oriented to Dance Music. Traditionally, DJs play music for people to dance.
Serato targeted the market for DJs who do a lot of scratching. You only need to scratch Hip Hop and Rap because voices do not mix smooth (you do not scratch real Club/Dance music). The International DJ competitions helped make Serato famous because these are scratch competitions. If you ever listened to a Scratch Competition (a DJ Competition) you will notice that what is being played is not for people to dance. Dancers will walk off the floor if they had to hear constant tricks and scratching (headache?).
Traktor is big in Europe which has traditionally been more "techy" with music than the USA. The USA is actually "techy" now. Who in the USA was as "techy" as Kraftwerk (Germany) in the 1970s? Japan was very "techy" also but was not popular. Actually, my knowledge of Traktor is limited.
So, summing up: Since my older DJ friends who have over 25 years of DJ experience are likely to be into video, they will pick VDJ Pro. Also, older DJ's definitely do not need an automixer. They pick VDJ Pro because it has represented more value! Using an automixer takes away the creativity and fun from DJing. It is mainly young DJs who make the "boo boo" automix "Ra Ra" Serato argument .
Even if we agree that Serato had "slightly" better sound quality up until VDJ 7.3, the problem with Serato over the long run has been Serato's business model which is exploitive like "share cropping" or living where a company controls everything like in mining where you buy groceries and clothing at the company store. Serato made you buy Rane equipment. Why? If you got a deal for a new house, would they make you buy all of your groceries from Shoprite? No! It would be shady (& illegal in some context). Since older people are more likely to know when they are being exploited, many older DJs had refused to use Serato. I prefer VDJ Pro but I use Serato also because it is difficult to explain Serato's hustle to "some" Club owners.
DJ TLM made one mistake in his video: he continued to say VDJ is for beginners but the fact is that VDJ Pro is targeted for Mobile DJs, Karaoke DJs, & Video DJs (VDJ).
The young DJs have been overwhelmed by DJ competitions (scratch competitions) & forget that music is for people to dance, not for crowds standing around watching the DJ scratch. This explains the "Ra Ra Ra" Serato Cheerleading and why event owners and managers in the NYC area have also drank the same Kool-Aid. It is just a scratch thing which is as fragmented as a criticism based on colors or automixing. Real DJ's do not use automix during a party. The exception could be when talking to a client about the itinerary or taking a break or arranging a Bridal Party or arranging people for introductions. Serato users have made 40 to 60 minutes songs (mixes) for this.
Please be honest!! Serato is a good piece of software that is overrated & tried to get everyone to buy Rane equipment (a hustle even thou Rane equipment is good stuff). VDJ for years has recommended "Echo Audio" soundcards. These "Echo Audio" soundcards are used in Pro Studios where you will never see a Rane soundcard (Echo Audio soundcards are better than Rane soundcards). Virtual DJ never made you buy "Echo Audio". You could have bought a $50 soundcard (freedom) even if it sounded like #%@t.

I agree. I use VDJ and Seráto. I honestly love both. But Unfortunately not every pc works with seráto especially if you plan to use video. That's why when I mix audio I enjoy Seráto for its simplicity. However, I know I can't go wrong using a PC to mix video and audio in VDJ. If you are a PC user you'll have more chances of getting a better mix in VDJ than in Seráto. Seráto doesn't run well on AMD processors. And it needs a dedicated gpu for video mixing.

You don't need the Rane equipment anymore. Pioneer has controllers that are set up for Serato DJ and maximize it. Serato, Macbook Pro and Pioneer, the combination to beat.

    • @paynespnz
      @paynespnz 10 лет назад

theprofessornj That combo to beat is just based on hype. I've used Serato since the SL1 and can honestly say now that VDJ stomps all over Serato DJ. More options, more customizable, more hardware freedom, and it runs much better on an average laptop than Serato does. I use my Serato time code vinyl with VDJ pro and it tracks just as well as it ever did. The ability to choose your own ASIO sound card is a huge plus for VDJ. There is not a single thing that Serato can do that VDJ can't. You can even get skins for VDJ to make it look EXACTLY like Serato.
I won't deny that Pioneer makes incredible equipment but for the average DJ spending 2k on the SZ is overkill. I love the features that it has but most people will never use them all. For a mobile or small venue/club DJ there are many other quality controllers for half the price with most of the same features. In the entry level price point for controllers I would actually choose a Numark controller over the Pioneer SB based on build quality and functions.
As far as the MacBook vs Windows debate, it mostly comes down to the individual machine. Off the shelf, big box laptops are never going to compete with a purpose built machine just for audio/video. I used to be one of the Mac elitists but I've since seen the improvments in windows laptops for music production and DJing. It's very easy to get a windows laptop built to order that outperforms a Mac for the same price or lower.
The Serato/Pioneer/Mac combination is no longer the only quality option out there. It's not even really the industry standard anymore. Especially for EDM.

    • @theprofessornj
      @theprofessornj 10 лет назад

nick sousa I have to wonder why you would get skins that make it look like Serato when you can just get Serato DJ for $129 or less. I have VDJ. I wouldn't compare it to Serato. I have Tracktor too. Again, it has limitations. I am a VJ/DJ so I need a machine that can handle videos well. I live in the NYC area. Most of the pro DJ's here use Serato and MackBook Pros. I see the local guys with VDJ and PC's, but not the top folks in the clubs and doing the weddings.
So it could be who you hang around and where you are at. It's like anything else, you have to have the equipment to be competitive. I am not sure why you would build a PC to compete with a Mac. Why not get the Mac?
When I ask the DJ's why they don't use PC's, they usually say they crash too much and have too many problems with the software compatibility. Serato and Pioneer are industry leaders for a reason. I have never had a Mac crash on me. Even when the hard drive failed, I used Time Machine and recovered everything. Not so with PC's , in fact I'm happy when they work right. I do like that you can replace the parts yourself on a PC. IMO I think it comes down to money. Mac's cost more and there are few discounts. More people have PC's , so there may be a conformity factor. But having used both for years, I mean back to DOS before Windows, I would always prefer the Mac. When I see a "pro" use VDJ, I will let you know.

    • @paynespnz
      @paynespnz 10 лет назад

theprofessornj Like I said, I've used both Serato and VDJ. I used to swear by Serato with the SL1 and SL2 but with the newer versions of VDJ vs Serato DJ I prefer VDJ for it's options and flexibility. It's just capable of fitting into more roles. I've been a working mobile/wedding DJ for 15 years and have done stints as a club/bar DJ. Lately I've been seeing more and more people using VDJ. Especially for mobile setups. It's rare to see a DJ at a wedding or a prom setting using turntables so Serato isn't at all popular for mobile DJs. I've seen wedding DJs using VDJ since people first started to migrate to laptop DJing. Maybe it's different in NYC but in the Bostonand Providence area Traktor is actually way more popular than Serato right now. At least as far as I've seen in the EDM scene.
Saying that you have to have the equipment to be competitive is just ignorant elitism. A talented DJ will shit on a hack with a pair of MK2s and a simple battle mixer. The equipment DOES NOT make the DJ.
As for the Mac vs Windows debate I said it's all preference. I use both. I prefer the Mac for music and video production but when it comes to live mixing in a club environment I will work with either one. As will many DJs I know. In a club/rave environment nobody cares what gear you use. The crowd will never know the difference and other DJs will respect your mix no matter what you spin on.
Some of the best house and trance DJs I've witnessed first hand didn't have a single piece of Pioneer gear in their setup. Of course they were still using Rane and Akai so they weren't skimping on prices

Great vid TLM, I started djing in the 90's with vinyl, and bought virtual dj pro as my first dvs system ($500) which comes with the external sound card, like serato. What caught my attention was that they offered video mixing, which at the time Serato did not offer that. Used it for years with my PC laptop, and for the most part did not have any issues. However when I switched my PC laptop to mac, VDJ didn't quite respond as good any more. In that transition, I gave Serato a chance and haven't looked back. Its responsiveness and quick midi programming is a cinch. I enjoyed VDJ, and djed many parties with it, and definitely am not putting it down, but I feel serato has done a great job for the all around dj, such as turntablism, cdj, or controller. At the end of the day, it's what you feel comfortable with.

What's up guys. Thank you DJ TLM for all you do! I just wanted to say I have been a VDJ user for a long time now and I can tell you I like it a lot. It is a great all in one program that gives you both audio and video capabilities right out of the gate! The software is really intuitive, it allows the new DJ to learn but also allows the seasoned DJ to improve. The one thing I like is once you purchase VDJ the software all of the update are included for free. I recently started using Serato DJ because it came with my DDJ-SX and the one thing that really stands out is all of the "upgrades" cost. I think that could really get expensive. That being said I use both programs. VDJ for weddings and video DJing, and I use serato for clubs and parties. As DJ TLM said check them all out, most have free demos or versions. Thanks for reading

Honestly just my 2cents, I been using vdj since virtual Dj 5 that's at least 10years ago, I been using vdj in timecode mode and its sharp, I used traktor final scratch 2 honestly that program was horrible , I will admit that kind of drew me away from NI traktor future dvs software, as far as serato is great for audio and video, but it's limited on video codecs, now that's why I chose VDJ, plus now VDJ8 sounds great and it's up to par HD audio and high quality Video mixing, scratching latency is as responsive as serato and traktor, A lot of djs say vdj is for beginners... And it's not turn off all aides like sync, bpm, automatic looping, and you got a "professinal Dj software" vdj can handle anything you throw at it

The comparison is spot on. First off I DJ with a HP laptop. I started off with Serato because that was the software I saw other DJ's using. Like you said plug and play. Then I started to watch these DJ's doing these live performances and it blew my mind how they could make music on the spot so I did my research and found they were using Traktor so I sold my Serato and got Traktor...talk about confusing from day 1. It took me a while but I figured it out. And now I wouldn't use anything else...Serato is the best straight out of the box. Traktor has to be configured which means you have to have to firm understanding of what you want. Virtual is useful for beginners or those who don't want to invest a lot of money.

After years of djing , I had the opportunity to analyze and go using the 3 softwares .... here is my "very personal" conclusions:
    -VIRTUAL DJ 8
(NOTE: new version (8), is by far more advanced and have rebuilt kernel, delivery much better sound effects and have HUGE's changes compared to old versions.)
Probably the best software to mix videos, visuals, and karaoke... specially designed to use in bars without dj, but don't get me wrong, is very powerful and have solid response, cpu & gpu low demand. Very customizable in all aspects like: browsing, eq freqs., mapping, online multimedia(videos, audio and karaoke) with internet, playlist, autoplays, loops, samplers and is a karaoke complete host system. In my opinion, only needs improve the sound quality.... ah!, and is ready to use with touch screens. This is my choice to use at bars when i need video mix and fill screens and projectors with visuals.
    *****VIRTUAL DJ 8 + iREMOTE(iPAD) = MAGICAL!!!*******
    --TRAKTOR PRO
I feel it is the best software to mix electronic music , I also believe that it is the one with better effects and better distribution on the screen to use them, in my opinion is the one that feels more robust. Its great disadvantage is not being able to handle visual or videos. My choice for raves and afterparties .
    ---SERATO DJ
Undoubtedly, the most logical and clean interface , is also the best in terms of editing properties of tracks, after or playing (cues , grid capable of handling different BPM in a single track) . Compared with others, this consumes more resources, especially the GPU , you need a more powerful machine ; It is best to scratch , it is also delivering the best sound if you use some dj controllers , moreover, better and more accurate timecode (vinyls).
My negative point concerns how to store and handle tracks and folders ( Creates ) always have to be updated every track, every create. This is my choice for gigs without visules or multi-genre mix.
    regards!

IN your statment, Virtual DJ can handle them all. In most bars you do multi-genre mixes, somecases som dj handles som usb drive and it works right away in the browser. Virtual dj has literally thousands of effects user made. Just browse and soon you have nice effects awailable. In our case virtual dj is for every party, always so compatible.

Now my go to software it's Virtual Dj 8 and also I can do my research on any Equipment that I can search and see if is available for my Dj software and start doin reviews so I can get to know any Dj Hardware (Controllers Turntables/ CDJS Mixers) So I can be ready if they have that available for that gig if I don't need to bring my Dj hardware for there (Club or Lounge) Keep up the work I will keep share the knowledge Funkup Salute.

i use Traktor, i've tryied serato but i didn't like it, i'm used for those big waveforms and the interface of traktor, and most think i like about traktor is that i can make my own mapping and add new devices to my set, and i like to make my own mapping, no matter how long it takes, i like that "Plug and play" option in serato where i just plug the usb cable and i'm good to go, but i didn't like those platers and that little waveform, and one more think, i must admit that the first software i used is virtual dj 7, it's a perfect softwares for beginners, that's all i have to say, great vid djTLM, thanks

I personally use Virtual D.J. 8. I started with VDJ 7 & no controller. I messed with it & before long, I bought a Numark DJ 2 Go mini controller. As I got more skilled & interested in Djing. I made the natural progression to the Mixtrack & then the Mixtrack 2. (looking forward to the 3) I feel like my mixes sound pretty good & I don't use sync. I quickly learned juggling & I'm currently learning how to scratch on my controller. I think that as long as you're being true to yourself & to whatever you believe "Real DJing" is & you move the crowd; I say LET THE MUSIC PLAY!!

VDJ 8, in my opinion, is just as good if not better than the others. I have used Traktor, and Serato, but neither is as functional. VDJ just has a bad name for some reason, but people should really give it a try, and no it is not standard "auto mix", you can still F up easy, and or you can kick ass, depends on your skill level that simple. As far as mixing, it is the same as the others.

I STAND BY VIRTUAL DJ. THANK YOU TECHNOLOGY FOR THE EVOLUTION OF THE TURNTABLE. I started on and love vinyl NO DOUBT! i been djn since 1983!! yes i still have my original technic 1200 mkII's...however... i use the pioneer ddj-sz and vjd8(feels pretty real) it was always my dream to take every song in the world with me to the party...now i can... It was always my dream that the needle wouldnt skip.... my dream has come true!!! i feel you about the toy look... however vdj has different skins... even a serato skin(hahahahaha) - yes virtual made djn easy - thats doesnt mean you have to use the easy way....however it does come in handy when your mixing 4 turntables... yes 4!! tell me you never dreamed of mixin on 4 turntables at one time!!! my ultimate mission has always been to deliver the "good Music" in a GREAT way!!! virtual dj definetly helps with that... way better than all the rest ... in my humble opinion.... Thanks... Salute the DJ #nodjnoparty #bayliferadiodjs

I've never seen a youtube comment section as good as this. I think i'm going to cry. I'm a beginner dj and i've used vdj for a few years, and it has worked almost perfectly for me. I haven't really tried scratching much because there's some latency between my controller and vdj. Another thing is that I can't seem to beat match at all because when the pitch bender will only increase on weird, high intervals of over .5 bpm which isn't nearly sensitive enough. I don't know if it's vdj or my mixboard, but for now im being a cheatin' bastard by using the sync button to match bpm.

i have a question pertaining to DJing. is it taboo to be a prepped-mix DJ performer? like, aside from typical like party DJing where you take requests and weave songs together, is there a market for those who put together a mix with a DAW ahead of time, and then basically just press play live, or is that frowned upon?

I've been dj-ing for years. used records, cd's serato and virtual dj. serato is great for scratching and vinyl/cd and has more of a manual feel with and with out controllers. Virtual dj may seem simple but has a lot of skins, settings, effects for days and works with controllers with no prob. Tractor is definitely music based and without controllers, it's a pain. By the way, your points are very valid

I really like this video and TLM's explanation... I have been dj'n for over 23 years. I started with vinyl only... I got into serato 1st as it was first to come out... My mixer burned out after years (still have it even though t doesn't work lol) I decided to get a 4 channel mixer this time instead of 2. The one i chose had traktor pro built in. So i used both for years. I now have a rane 62 because i like the feel and features. I can tell you first hand that traktor has a lot of options. I know both programs inside out. I find that depending on the mixer it can dictate your personal progression and style. Rane has phantom mic power which allows for live instrument connection. U can also do it with tractor but depending on your mixer you may need an amp for direct connection.
Both options are great and most people do not really "argue" which is better because if they are serious "creators" and skilled in the trade (yes learn by using your ears people) then they respect you

I then learned about Virtual DJ but ran into problems of the program freezing on me while doing gigs with it. Later in my DJ career, I switched back to turntables and stopped using virtual DJ. I am not bashing anyone here, but from my view, Serato is the best for me. I have never experimented on Traktor.

    3. you can play your list on auto mix (need to go to the bathroom or something the music will not stop playing )

Hey man, I love your video. I'm just now getting into the software DJing after using turntables and CDJs for the last 15 years. I wanted to say I absolutely agree that if you have the opportunity you should try to learn to beatmatch by ear. I've seen some very confident DJs be absolutely humbled when they are invited somewhere that has two MK-2s, an Allen & Heath and headphones..and that's it. Yea it won't matter to the audience, but it will to some of the older heads and your peers if you can throw down on any setup, which is one of the reasons i'm getting into software.

Traktor with my 1200's feels amazing (I stopped using timecode with my Pioneer CDJ1000s). Yes, I agree Traktor can be tricky especially with midi mappings and setting up new gear but I thankful for others nerds who have already created TSI file etc. I really love using Traktor A6, love the sound quality and it's very stable.

    Have you tried Mixxx?
I never see anyone compare/contrast Mixxx (Free, Opensource, Cross Platform). I am just learning how to DJ and budget was my biggest concern, so I bought a Pioneer DDJ - SB2 last year and loaded up Mixxx on my Laptop and Desktop (You need to find a profile file for the SB2 in the Mixx community as it doesn't automatically detect the SB2/SB3 yet) and I am on my way! I haven't had any problems using the software.
I don't see what the big fuss is about with vdj and sdj. It reminds me of the Windoze vs MAC debate, when all along Linux has been there in the background for free all along...

I've been using the Virtual Dj Program for about 6 or 7 years, I just recently received the Virtual Dj 8 software. Still working with the new program, & yes you are correct on what you are saying about Traktor about the customizations, working the program the way you want it to work, same goes for Virtual Dj. Now I have a friend that uses Serato, SSL 1, first time I used it I was amazed with the use of the program. Also experience with Serato with the Rane mixer as well (nice set up & also quick). There were no delays on the scratching or changing the tempo. Everything worked on point but that was years ago. In the beginning using Virtual Dj yeaaa, it was kind of lagging here & there but with the updates throughout the years it seems like the program was getting there. Like I said I'm still working with Virtual Dj 8 but the previous Virtual Dj, Virtual Dj 7, works pretty good.

Hey DJTLM, I think it one very important thing you said about Traktor that reminded me of Virtual DJ. I started off DJing with this terrible controller Vextax Typhoon on virtual dj which over time proved insufficient. The Typhoon hardware had to be downloaded in order to use Virtual DJ and $20 per month and sometimes the controller would not even be recognized, imagine that. I upgraded to the Pioneer DDJ SB and Serato DJ and was blown away. I love working with serato DJ better than Virtual DJ and was even more happy because the controller recognized immediately.

In the last 2 years since this video was posted, all 3 programs have been updated. Serato tends to get the credit for being "the real professional" software, because that's what all of the cool nightclub DJs use and people see it. But, that discussion is more like comparing NIssan, Toyota, Honda. I started using Virtual DJ 1 year ago after using a different program for 2 years. I find a lot of benefits for the mobile DJ doing weddings, parties and corporate events. It's very stable, allows you to download legal music with Content Unlimited for $10/month. It also has a lot of skins that mirror your specific controller, video and karaoke options. Like TLM says, there's not one right answer for everybody.

I have and currently use all three. For live sets I use Mac serato just on the feedback I get. For mp3 production I use traktor due to the use of a controller that I can tweak to make up the lacking qualities in certain controllers and vdj for broadcasting which is great for linking up with audio and video broadcast sites using icecast but there is not one software that do all three great. So depending what type of dj you are consider your setup and software to what you're doing and follow the forum communities of that software that you use to help you create your unique set and sound

Yo djTLM I have a little stupid question.
The father of a friend of mine is restoring an old club in our city and when it's done I'm going to be the DJ there.
We still haven't choosed the controller but my eyes really catched the Pioneer DDJ-SX2 and the DDJ-SR.
I like TRAKTOR more than Serato just because of its vision but I don't know if I will find a mapping for any of these 2 controllers.
And the question is does Serato DJ Intro (This is the free version, right?) have a phase meter.

steleannn the sx2 has tsi files for mapping with traktor. I have the sx2 and I love it. The only issue I would have the the SR is that it is USB powered and that's just something else that your computer has to handle.

I love using VDJ cause it’s simpler to use. I agree that’s it’s designed more for beginners but if you really know ho to use it you can create killer mixes

Excellent video, I never tried Virtual DJ but it always seemed to me for beginners. I never liked Traktor which I tried first as it was too cluttered. I settled on Serato as I like the way you can quickly turn things on and off that you need and for my workflow in the clubs it just works for me.

To start off, I have been DJing in clubs since 1986. I decided to give the digital thing a try a couple years ago by buying a Hercules RMX, which came with VDJ5. I upgraded to VDJ6 and was actually impressed. The RMX has the interface built in for turntables and it worked fairly well, just not real accurate on the scratches. But finding an audio interface for VDJ is difficult. With Serato & Traktor, the program comes automatically with the interface when you buy it, so no searching is involved. With VDJ, you will need to find an interface to get the turntable\CDJ signal into the computer. I use Serato now, but those who diss VDJ without at least trying it are completely uninformed.

I was watching your series on scratching but i noticed that I'm not able to reproduce that same vinyl sound when using a controller. I'm not sure if it's VDJ or the fact I'm using a controller, any advice would be much appreciated. Times like those make me want to go back to using the old school method.

Man, I like your videos! I'm loving your q&a, I guess when I was younger and less experienced in the DJ scene, I was quite opinionated and I got to a reasonable level with Vinyl, (turntablism and band member), I was having a lot of fun
Then the whole scene blew up with final scratch/tractor, serato...
I'm glad that early in this bomb going off, I became more of the opinion and view point you expressed here, You express it way better than me, it's all too easy to get swayed in the convo when it comes to ios v Android!
Serato was my choice, and it gave me so much, all of a sudden I could play the trax of my unsigned band, I could use custom scratches! And a whole lot more, I was having even more fun! However, I'm still getting used to the whole dvs, I have to still develop it as my personal preference, as it gives me so much more... I'm just a bit pants at organising and knowing ALL the tunes I have in my HD. Vinyl was easier as smaller and the artwork sleeves.
For these reason I'm eagerly awaiting you're videos continuing the mix tape series, so far it's helped me a lot!
    Thanks! :)

    Hello TLM,
Can you suggest me the best options available for Serator Scratch live SL1 on CDJ 400 and DJM350... I also plugin Novation Dicer, As of now I am using Dicer and mapped it for Serato Video Fader.. But it is still a bit hassle because I wanted to use DJM Fader. Is it possible on Serato Video on my Pioneer DJM 350

Which software would you recommend for a person starting out at home with a controller. Does one handle controllers better than the other. Thanks

Great vid bro.... I've been djing for bout 12 years and have a buddy who wants to get into it and is having the same issue on deciding what platform to use and I'm going to use your video to explain his options. I watched the whole thing and it was well put together and your well spoken and your personal opinion is good and professional. Although I would like to ask if you have ever used Torq? Is a German based software I believe. It's really good it be nice to hear back from you on your opinion of the Torq system.

Content unlimited is why i give vdj the win. Having access to the extended and clean edits just makes mixing easier.

Great vid and honest without the ego that can often pollute an honest review. - I used to DJ vinyl and 96 was my last year -- Im just venturing back into the hobby - and Im ot interested in affects, just playing really good music... The last several years as in Hobby only and that I will still be able to take to an occasional gig. I have determined VTJ is right for me primaruly because that was my intro int mixing mp3's , have gotten so used to it and know it like that back of my hand.. I recently went to Serato - and was completely lost so Im going back to VDJ. VDJ has a very good point.. Certainly I could beat match etc on vinyl with ear,. . but Im really enjoying the convenience with VDJ .. its a good slidf program and never fails me.. NO not as technical ... but - My sets are just as killer with VDJ if not more than when I used vinyl,. I dont scratch or use to many effects to distract from the music- but I do take advantage of looping, sampling etc and VDJ is perfect for that. . SO for me its VDJ. and yes - I AM a REAL DJ those whose ego far outweighs their final outcome to what they call a good set.. lol If it sounds like shit - it doesnt matter what you are using.

How does the Pioneer Turntables feel when scratching compare to the technics.
