In 1993 the world was introduced to Roshal Archive, or RAR - a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error recovery and file spanning. It was developed by Russian software engineer, Eugene Lazarevich Roshal, but the copyright for the file format is held by his brother Alexander.
Two years later, we got WinRAR - a file archiver utility for Windows, which would be used to create and view archives in RAR or ZIP file formats, and also unpack a whole bunch of other archive file formats.
WinRAR is distributed as a ''try before you buy'' software. According to the terms of use, you can use it for free during a 40 day trial period, after which you are required to buy a license.
However, if you ever used WinRAR, you know that you can continue using it for free even after the 40 day trial period ends.

Lol, I've been through that. It's more inconvenient than anything, since you gotta download the "trial," use it to extract the pirated one, uninstall the old one, and use the new one. Or you might be able to just drop that registration file in your trial version. Never tried. But I think I've been guilted into buying it after all these years.

John Mcaffe did a similar thing with the Mcaffe Anti-virus. He made it free to use for personal users, however businesses had to play a license. His bet was that some people would install it on their work computers and then the businesses, in fear of having to pay a larger sum for having an illegal software, would pay the license fee. Turns out he was right, this is a very good move.
That explains why I have no viruses despite not buying the license for over a year
This is also the model of a bunch of companies.
Avira for instance has a 'free' edition which has less features, but overall the main thing is it's terms of use say it's for 'personal, home use only'
There's a ton of software doing this.
With antivirus it kinda makes sense. Not only do you now have built-in windows antivirus anyway...
But home users tend to be reluctant to pay for such things.
But much like with viruses in the real world, every unprotected system in the world increases the chances of these infections spreading.
So an antivirus company providing 'free' versions to home users helps keep viruses under control in general...
Which, I guess doesn't directly benefit their bottom line, but it doesn't hurt their reputation to be seen to be providing a public service...

Fucking morons enabled WinRAR by allowing it, that's how their scheme worked. If you didn't care about WinRAR, then you were part of the problem. And that's Microsoft's game: make bystanders complicit in the scheme, and they become unstoppable.

For some reason I used to assume that the 40 day trial only counted down while the program was running, thinking it would have to have a total runtime of 960 hours before the trial went away.

These are just one of those videos that are so unique you see it in your recommend every 6-7 months and you have no choice but to revisit it
I have to hand it to them. That's a great business model, and dare I say one of the most "fair" there is. The big businesses will buy licenses because they have to maintain certain legalities; the home user would most likely never run in to a situation where not buying the license is noticed by or given any importance from any regulatory agency, so it would be asinine to put a hard stop once day 40 is over. So really, everyone wins. The businesses can afford numerous licenses, the devs make their profit and the private home user still gets to benefit. That seems pretty cool to me.

I think that WinRAR and 7Zip creators were two friends who became foes and now WinRAR doesn't want anyone using 7Zip so they make their software free.

On that dreaded day they had a fight with each other over some argument about his girlfriend and the creator of 7zip sucker punched him. Mr King they most likely don’t. You probably think they do because an error message (this copy of Windows is not genuine ) comes up, but that’s doesn’t necessarily mean it’s pirated ... most likely that the hard drive has been in many different computers and the Windows gets confused

One of the most incredible things about Winrar is that its a great software that may be free but they've still managed to get the whole world using it! That's a lot of power to a brand, without ever having to get money involved.

My mom uses WinRAR for some of her coworker’s files and I was so sad to see that she bought it first time seeing the 40 day trial message

I assume that you mean the Android App when you say "portable" as that is the only thing mentioned in the video that seems to qualify. That's not what portable means in terms of software. I've never used Winrar, I also prefer 7zip, so hey I could be wrong and it actually is portable in the software sense (I don't think so though). Regardless, in software "portable" means, "Can be run on a computer without first having to install it." Or more specifically, "Everything needed to run the software is contained in one directory, including any and all personal data, and at no point is the software required to access from or write data to a different directory in order to run. Thus this software can run on any computer that runs the same operating system so long as the user is able to gain access to the directory in which the software is contained."
In other words, "Portable," here means, "You can put it on a USb stick, and run it on someone else's computer if you need to." The Android app would not be portable, in this sense.
