I watched this video and I made the decision to pay a family friend to clean out my basement with the instructions that I will get a dumpster and he is just going to throw everything out. We get a basement leak once or twice a year and that made me not want to look through things because of mold and mildew and allergies. "Recruit help" and "Don't look at every single thing" was exactly what I needed to hear.

This is slightly off topic but I must tell you this - yesterday I sold on marketplace a bundle of puzzles that my son never uses. At first I felt really guilty because my lovely overgenerous mum bought them for him. The lady who I sold them to said that her kids were so excited to receive them and it made my day. It felt so good to know they will be used and to make other children smile 😊

When I'm by myself, decluttering feels overwhelming and exhausting. When I have a friend sitting next to me, I get rid of half my belongings in 20 minutes. Having another person to just help put yourself in a more objective head place, and also help physically carrying things is a total game changer.

(The fact that Tom was on the one we watched convinced him to take action) "and then declutter my clothes and sort stuff out... it is so easy to find what I want now". Couldn't believe my ears but I had a smile all over my face and thought... Thank You Minimal Mom and Tom.

It's so interesting and real to me that someone like this, who is more than ready to get rid of tons of stuff, wants someone there beside her for moral support. I feel like if someone was standing beside me when I get going, I'd have an easier time doing it and getting rid of more than I do by myself.

    • @Debbiesdilemmas

I feel exactly the same way. It just feels less intimidating to have someone by your side. I guess some moral support. I am more than ready to declutter the majority of my belongings but I’m sure I could do it so much faster with someone cheering me on. I’d ask my husband or son but they probably would tell me to keep everything. They’re actually my biggest problem.😩

My husband went on a rage purge just last night. We moved last year and had a 10-ft section of our family room that still has boxes stacked, mainly because of stuff didn't have places to go. I'm the type that gets paralyzed when the project is overwhelming, while he gets switched on. He was on a roll last night! Family room is all cleared out now.

I really needed to hear that it’s OK to just NOT look through ALL the boxes and recycle and donate each thing.
Overwhelm is really a struggle when you have too much and I want to just get rid of stuff. And there have been so many times I just wanted to throw things away and not even look through stuff because I was tired of it hanging over me but, what stopped me was I always felt bad inside that I was being wasteful or not doing it right. Those feelings hold me back from clearing things out so I could be less overwhelmed! ( not knowing it’s called Rage purge, but that’s how you feel inside, you are DONE!)
Thank you for giving me permission, saying it OUT LOUD. I think I really needed that.
Aren’t we more important than stuff? And if getting it out now is the best way for us then, why not? Getting hung up on what people think I ( or we) should do to go forward sometimes can really set me ( us all) back.
That’s not always the way I need to declutter but sometimes it is. And I don’t do it because then I feel guilty and judged.
So I’m going to do it! I’m totally just clearing out so I can have the peace I really want and NEED!

Tom deserves his own memory box. I’m definitely going to make one for my husband and tell him he only has that much room for things he wants to keep. Up until now our whole home has been his memory box.😫

    • @salishheights2320
      @salishheights2320 2 года назад

Agreed on all of this! It would be hard to one in/one out and use the container concept if you are sharing a container with someone. You have different priorities. That's why there are memory bins! Each person needs their own ~ and the limit of a bin, not a whole house... and 3 car garage! 😅

As crazy as it may sound, I love rage purges! I used to call them stress decluttering, because I would get so overwhelmed with everything I had to clean or move from one space to another over and over again, it would cause me stress, but rage purge sounds so much better! 😅 There are times I get so angry at myself for keeping so much junk, that it actually causes rage, so yeah that term is so fitting. 🤣

And before long you’re overwhelmed and over tired, and the piles stay as piles and never really get dealt with. Sometimes you just have to jump in and start tossing.

I absolutely think it's Important to get things out of your face immediately, at least for me. What's gone is gone and I don't have to move it around anymore. That's why my basement room is stressing me out so much, because I have no space to set things aside and have to put them *back* in that room after I separated "keep" and "get rid of". That's also why I will be renting a car when I have time off after Christmas; to load it with the stuff I'm not going to keep and to drive it away right after.

I was able to gift my china to a friend who has a much larger house, table, family & will actually use it. I checked with each of my own kids first, & none of them wanted it. The fact that none of my kids wanted it hurt a tiny bit, but I had to remind myself that just because it was special to me didn’t mean it was special to them.

This basement looks so neat and tidy already!! You should see my unfinished, bare concrete floor and walls, pipes and wires everywhere - and still full of stuff that has to go!!!! But we are picking away at it, and have culled a ton already - most just has to be cleaned and/or dusted, packed up properly - then out to the second-hand store. I wish you would show a really really really old basement like mine!!

Interestingly when you are looking at purging by yourself, it seems intimidating, but when you have someone helping, that is realistic and not pushy, it can be almost fun. Find someone like that to help and things will go easy.

Realizing I am so much like Lisa. My main living area is very simplified. But when you go down to my basement that is where my quarantined things are. It is overwhelming to be down there.

Just good and grab one bin/box/ or fill a bucket with loose stuff. Take it somewhere, sort in keep and goes away. Put the keep stuff either where it belongs or put is somewhere you Will gather sorted stuff before finding where it goes.
Everyday 5 things is better than never doing anything because of the overwhelm.
      You can do it!

I did take out of my garage 7 boxes of papers that I hadn't touched since I moved 10 years ago. I only have two small bags of papers to go through and shred now. I loved how Tom helped you get your words out. Blessings.

That was quite satisfying to watch. I liked your point about how it's okay to keep stuff you really want, even if you don't really need it. Once you purge all the stuff you hate or don't care about, there's actually room for the things you love! And you can actually find them, use them, and enjoy them!

Watching this video.... I think one of the things that is MOST appealing to me..... she can glance into a box, then turn and start on the next box. I am thinking for me.... the worst part is actually the letting go? Actually throwing it into the trash, or donate box, etc. Just being able to let someone else do that part would be great, and actually taking it to it's designated spot!

Memory bin great idea for help while decluttering. I’ve decluttered a ton and getting closer to minimialism but not there yet! I wish I would have thought of this bc some items just deserve to go in there to even be considered later. I sorta used structure on Kon Mari but definitely followed my own instincts as well. she says leave sentimental until last but some of my clothes were sentimental (Ie skirt I wore when I first met my now deceased adopted beagle who was huge huge part of my life) etc could have actually been put in the box to decide last w all sentimental items.. I just didn’t consider clothes as items to put as sentimental but memory bin term would have actually clicked w me for items like this that fit into two categories. Just semantics but really huge difference for me. Love this! So inspiring!

    AWESOME!
I've been reading a book starting today called Cut the Clutter and Stow the Stuff edited by Lori Baird...is proving to be an "excellent read".
I believe after taking the quiz at the beginning of the book...she is a Concealer/ Tosser combination when it comes to clutter.
I found, out today, that I am the same type of clutter person.
The Concealer organizes the clutter, very well...but, later; does a 'good job of tossing'.
I say, "WELL DONE!"....You knew what you wanted to keep...and, got rid of the rest.
Today, after reading several pages of this book....I was able to go out to my crafting area; and, get rid of quite a few "embossing folders and texture plates"....where before, I was having trouble "letting go".
    Great job, ladies!....and, gentlemen!😀

Thanks for sharing! I am usually a viewer of RUclips videos, never a commenter. However, I just wanted to say that I live vicariously through your videos and the minimal living you promote. I love it and I am always in a rage to purge. I crave to simplify. However, I know that I may never get to be able to live a simple life because my husband is a hoarder that doesn’t think he has a hoarding problem. He picks up all of the things I purge and bring it back inside the house. It doesn’t feel good to declutter when I get punished for doing it, even with my very own things. It’s nice to vicariously live a simplified and minimal life by watching your videos. Thank you!
