Finally a larger aftermarket fuel tank that looks great...
Thanks for taking the time to make this video Keith. Much appreciated. IMS $200 more than 15 litre Acerbis but obviously better quality.
Good job, nice and simple. Some thing I just made work for anyone wanting to keep the stock 90° fuel fitting, instead of the straight coupler that comes with the Acerbis tanks because of the thinner tank plastic. Is I just used a pipe cutter to cut some length off the stock fitting, and was able to keep it instead of having to route the hose straight down with the new tank.
Your workshop is so tidy! Think I may need to up my standards!
Looks better than stock
My first thought was that is the ugliest tank I have ever seen. I was wrong. On the bike it looks great! Now I want one.
That looks excellent. Unfortunately they don't make it for the 2015.
I think Russ is a free spirit. Haha
Appreciate the video and being straight forward, agree with other comment...great workshop.
You know acerbis make your plastics for the rest of the bike ,so from all the acerbis tanks I have fitted they have been a perfect fit aswell.
are you going to put a protective shroud over the fuel line? .. Couple of mm clearance isn't much
A link to the best place to buy this would be good. Seeing prices around A$880? That's wicked. Too much for some nice plastic, unfortunately.
Is there an after-market fuel level gadget that can be fitted?
I believe you have influenced my decision on buying the KTM 500exc. Great videos keep up the good work.
i had a 17 sufari on mine and it was ok for flat track but up hill was no good. as it was wider it spreads yor knees when standing , this force you to stand on out side of ankles . even with good boots i was alwas conchious of ankle injury . apart from that the bike rode well with big tank . look foward to your ride review
excellent!!thank you!i also have an ims 17ltr tank sitting here and was wanting to see just this video!!!
Well done J.
My dog does the same. I call him, he's likez nah I'm good mate.
Explain please: The fuel pump located only on one side of the tank, how does the bike consume fuel from another "leg" of the fuel tank?
Don't know about the IMS tank, but there is usually a hose that connects between the bottom of each side. I didn't see anything in the video, but assume Keith's new tank is the same.
The absolute best mod that can go on that bike model is a vortex ecu.
I hope the Safari goes on my 570 Husaberg as well as that
I have the same bike and I'm fortunate enough to live in utah:). I'm wondering what range you're getting before and after thanks
Awesome
black looks great, but i would think clear is the way to go if you're concerned with fuel usage. Always easier to just lean over take a peak.......we're good!!! :)
Agree, but I like the black :) I just reset the trip meter each fill up and know I can do 300km easy. 350km more likely.
Keith, have you ever done a true capacity test? From when the bike won't run any more, not from bone dry
looks good
Keith, I've been told today that there isn't enough clearance between the underside of the IMS 17 litre tank and the spark plug boot on the 500. Consequently, the boot and/or the plug insulator can be damaged, leading to ignition issues.
What is your experience with this please?
Nice mate, does it ever have any trouble getting fuel from the bottom of the right side over to the pump side when it’s running low?
the most I've ever used was 15L, so still 2L left and no probs at that point.
Great video, I’m currently trying to decide on buying new 500 or pre 2017 as the 20L tank isn’t available for 2017+ models..maybe I’m splitting hairs over 5L..
Get the IMS and it's only 3L ;-)
Thanks. There was a comment that it changed the rider's stance on the bike when standing. Did you find that? Thanks again.
not for me, maybe different tanks are shaped differently though.
Hi Keith
Any thoughts about the pros and cons of a long range tank versus a 9Lt fuel bladder if just adding one?
thanks
David
In my books the bigger tank wins every time. The fuel is where it needs to be, the weight will automatically stay low (lower than a bladder on the back), it is not going to leak, and you don't have to muck around with the actual refuelling on the trail. Down side is it is heavy when full, but you don't have to fill it for every ride. The actual tank weight difference is negligible.
Hi Keith, love your videos. I’m in Australia and was wondering where you got your headlight please?
Cheers and hope to catch you on the trails some day 👍
Bought from MotoMinded in the USA. The kit came with the headlight surround and dimmer.
How easy would that tank puncture if you laid it down on a rock? Those protruding corners up front look weak??
I can attest that they are strong! I've got some deep gouges in one of those wings after an encounter with some rocks... 😉
Hi Keith. I am installing an ims tank to a 2021 500. The tank has only about 1mm clearance on the side of the head (left side high up near the gasket). Bit too close for heat! How close is yours?
About 5mm clearance.
@@keithjob Thanks Keith. Appreciate you looking for me. Well done on your videos.
Thanks for the video....bike is looking great!!. Do you know what range it gives you.
I've only done about 700km on this bike, but today it averaged 23km/L over 200km. That was highway, dirt roads, fire trails and some single track. So theoretical range is 390km. For the sake of planning I'd be working on 20km/L so 340km per tank. Obviously depends enormously on the terrain and gearing. I was using 15/50 today. Previous 14/50 returned about 21.5km/L.
Why don't they put a vertical window slot in the tank so you can see the fuel level?
Cost. Leaks. Etc.
What were the brass inserts in the very front of the tank for? Looked like additional mounting points for the shrouds if you wanted to drill the shrouds to match the holes?
G'day Chris... no idea! I suspect you are correct though, maybe someone makes some shrouds? There's also two brass inserts on the underside of the LH wing, just forward of the two fuel tap/pump holes. No idea what these are for either..
Hey Keith great video, have you found the extra weight up front being a problem in the stability and balance of the bike?
Not at all.
@@keithjob awesome thank you Keith
Sweet!
Hi Keith: It says in the IMS website :* Tank Installation Requires Trimming Radiator Shrouds * : did you have to trim prior this installation or amke any modifications to the tank can fit please?
Not on my bike.
@@keithjob Thanks for the reply
Can someone tell me what is the biggest available capacity tank available for the 500 in liters.
Also I've hear there is a engine side case extension that gives the engine more oil capacity. Is this true?
To my knowledge, the largest tanks are from Acerbis with a 20L tank to fit 2012-2016 models. 2017-on the Acerbis is only 15L, which is why I went with IMS at 17L. Pretty sure that is the biggest tank for 2017-on model 500's.
More oil capacity - yes, via a different clutch cover. Rhino make them (+260ml), Hinson, and probably a lot more manufacturers.
The 23 Liter tank is much slimmer
Who makes a 23L tank for current model EXC's? I can't find anyone, only Safari but that was for really early models, 2002.
Hi Keith, where did you purchase the IMS tank from, in Australia or online ?
Thank you in advance
Got mine from adventuremoto in Australia. They are distributors for IMS. Although I did have to wait a few months as it was back ordered.
Good job,thks.
Hi Kieth great vids. I’ve picked up an IMS tank but with no fit kit or instructions. Don’t need instructions as you’ve done a good job here, but was wondering if they listed bolt lengths and sizes so I can gather some up before I disable it for fit me to. Cheers
there's a one-pager install sheet. Parts list:
(1) fuel cap w/ flat seal
(1) fuel tank
(1) small seat hook
(5) 5x18 button head bolt
* for seat hook
* for fuel pump *
(12) 5x12 flange bolts with 8mm head
(2) IMS XR-600 Bracket
(2) 6x12 flange bolts
if you want a pic of the sheet send me your email
Can you tell me which one it is? On the ims page tanke number #13348? Ty
I am having a bit of problem finding this tank do you have any suggestions it looks great by the way, much better than the others! My EXC-500 needs one very much very thirsty machines.
I'm in Australia and ordered one from the distributor here, Adventure Moto. They had none in stock and it was back-ordered, so took 4-6 weeks I think. You could take your chances and order direct from the US but the exchange rate and postage will be a killer.
@@keithjob Thanks for your input and the video Really love my EXC 500-F ! Ga-Day Mate!
Do you have a radiator fan on your bike, and if yes was there any clearance problems between IMS fuel tank and fan? I couldn’t see a fan in the video. Thanks
Yes the bike has a fan, behind the radiator. No problems with clearance.
Super! Love your videos. I’m using them as a guide for my 2019 450 EXC-F Six Days build. Thanks again.
Keith did you have to add any holes as I was just curious
Holes where? I added nothing, drilled nothing for fitting.
great tank on the great bike, what mark is the tank .?
The tank is made by IMS
Hello , can you send me a picture front gast tank mount in the motorcycle ,please.
Can i get the old tank ?
Did the stock fuel connector and nut been holding up well?
not a problem.
Thanks for the video. I plan to get the same tank. Any issues with the tank rubbing on the valve cover. I read there has been some issue with a hole being worn into the cover over time. Not 100% sure it relates to the 4.5 gallon. Thanks
No issues with rubbing at all.
I'm having this issue
@@davecruickshsnk3074 did you fix the issue? I'll be installing it on my 2021 500 soon...
Subscribe. Haha
I ended up installing the IMS 4.5 gallon about a year ago and have not experienced any issues.
Hello Keith
What kind of windscreen do you use on the bike ?
Thanks
This video explains the screen. ruclips.net/video/k4BGpqsWYkU/видео.html
@@keithjob Thanks
Hi Keith, is this a 4.5 or 4.25 Gal tank? or did you buy it in liters 17?
17L is how it was advertised here in Australia.
@@keithjob Hi Keith. Have you measured actual volume from empty. I purchased the ims tank second hand that was advertised as 17 litres. Filled it up and only got 15 Litres in it? Converting 4.25 gallons to litres comes out at 16 litres so not sure how that advertise it as 17 litres? Thanks
How does the fuel from the RHSide (lower) get to the fuel outlet?
Just tip the bike to the side?!!😂
Hello
How do you control the level of fuel in the black tank?
If it's full I know I can travel around 350km. I reset my trip meter when I fill up.
Thanks for the answer, I plan to buy ktm 500 instead of 1190. I study your blog every day. Very informative
Kry 200 rusi user here haha tangina
Where did you buy the IMS tank?
www.adventuremoto.com.au are the Aussie importers. They backordered it for me, so it took a while to come in.
what's your range?
I plan on 350km. Might squeeze a bit more out of it depending on terrain.
But you never know exactly how mutch is inside, I don’t like this point
I hear you, BUT I like the black look more than I don't like not knowing.. :-)
@@keithjob love this comment
